We are on site this cloudy breezy day at Tampa Bay Downs and the first race is in the books.
It is a high off 56 degrees today, a slight wind, but still a packed house for racing. The track is listed as fast and the turf is firm. The first race was a claiming race, a price of $6,250, for fillies and mares four years old and up. It was a distance of 7 furlongs on the field, and a purse of $12,700.
The favorite was Candy War, the 5-year old mare from the barn of Justin Johns, but Extreme Excess stole the spotlight with a 1:26.71 finish. Extreme Excess was ridden to victory by female jockey, Shannon Uske, whom seemed underestimated, and is trained by Dennis Ward.
For a majority of the race the battle was between the favorite Candy War, High Heel Lady, and Scarlett Del until the end, when Extreme Excess rallied three wide, then drew clear to kick away for the strong lead leaving no time for Candy War to catch up. Extreme Excess won 2 1/4 lengths ahead of the favorite. Behind Candy War for third place was Prime Mistress whom was outrun early, and in fourth was High Heel Lady, whom weakened.
Extreme Excess was claimed by new owner Paula D. Martinez and new trainer Michael D. Wells. The total Win Place Show was $84,773.
Stay tuned or more update throughout the day.
