Florida Derby Day Recap; Sunday's Racing 1:15 PM

The 2019 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park failed to disappoint, as 14 races under Clear-Firm conditions yielded some fantastic racing excitement. Seven stakes races were run, where just two favorites entered the winner's circle. In three of the 7, the favorite finished 4th or 6th in the field.

None-the-less, the 134 starters competed for $2.67 million in purse money, culminating in the $1 million Florida Derby in the last race, where Maximum Security (4.8:1) ran the 1-1/8 mile dirt distance gate to wire in a strong 1:48.86 time. Hidden Scroll (1.8:1), the favorite, ran 6th ! Gary and Mary West were the winning owners, and Luis Saez the jockey. Bodexpress got the place at 71:1 odds and Code of Honor the Show (3.8:1).

With the winners being lower odds overall on the day, the payouts were not large. The high odds winner was 23:1 in race 1 (Liquid Aloha), a claiming race, while the 12th race winner (Tombelaine) also a claimer, at 10:1 was the high odds in the last 6 races. The late multiple race bets paid as such:

Late Pick 4: $582.20; Late Pick 5: $1,338.15, and Rainbow 6 paid $1,934.68. The one huge payoff was the Super Hi-5 on the Florida Derby: the $1.00 wager paid $61,512 for the correct 7-8-9-4-2 finishing order. We estimate about 7,300 winning tickets were possessed by the Rainbow 6 winners using our data. $14.4 million was wagered on the Rainbow 6 Saturday, and the $2.66 million carryover was added to the $11.52 million bets on Saturday (after the takeout).

In sum, comparing 2019 with 2018 Derby Day, the starters were down 2 horses to 134; the purse money was $2.91 million in 2018; off 8% this year to $2.68 million, and the total track and all source handle was down $2.4 million or about 5%.

Still, as $47,520,620 was wagered Saturday on the 14 races; that has to be considered a "win" for racing fans, owner's, trainer's and track management.

Gulfstream Park ends it Championship Meet today, with a 1:10 PM first post time. 11 races area planned on the card. There are no carryovers for today since it's the last day of the meet. The Spring-Summer meet begins Thursday, April 4th at 1:15 PM.

Thanks for reading!

Rainbow 6, Florida Derby Coming at Gulfstream

By Jim Freer and Barry Unterbrink

Conditions are Fast and Firm for today’s Florida Derby Day card at Gulfstream Park.

In addition to its headline race, Gulfstream will have a mandatory Rainbow 6 payout of a pool that likely will be between $10 million and $15 million.

For coverage this afternoon and evening, please turn to this blog.

The $1 million Florida Derby (Grade 1) is the 14th and final race, with scheduled  post  of  6:36 p.m. It is 1 1/8 miles on dirt  for  3-year-olds and is  a qualifying points race for this year’s  Kentucky Derby to be  run May 4 at  Churchill Downs in Louisville,  Ky.

We will post our predictions and recommended bets at approximately 5:15  Eastern Time.

We are picking Bourbon War to win the Florida Derby, and we recommend considering longshot Garter and Tie for lower spots in exacta and trifecta  bets.

The mandatory payout Rainbow  6 is on races nine to 14, with the sequence set to start at 3:34 p.m.

Gulfstream will pay out the “jackpot”  of the entire incoming carryover of  $2,660,030 and 80 percent of today’s new Rainbow 6 bets—regardless of  the number of tickets with the winners of all six  Rainbow 6 races.

On non-mandatory days, Gulfstream pays out the jackpot only when there is just one ticket with all six winners.

Gulfstream officials have said they expect more than $10 million to be bet on the Rainbow 6.

It is a 20-cent per combination bet, with multiple horses permitted in each race.

For example, a bet with two horses in each race has 64 combinations and costs $12.80.

BAUER'S BETS: Fast & Firm at Tampa

THE BET $10 to win on (7) UNION RANKS and a $2 exacta box with (2) VOUCH and (3) ZEFIRO
2,3,7.  Total Bet $22.   GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS Lost $22 yesterday. The Bankroll is now plus $64.60.

BAUER'S BETS: Fast and Firm at Tampa

(8) VINDICTA appears to have an edge over her rivals in Race 5, eight grassy furlongs for NW2L older $16,000 claiming fillies and mares. Post time is 3 PM.

This four-year old filly drops to face condition claimers for the first time. She has early speed and might wire this bunch, has been away for over a year. Working well for Keith Nations (26% winners at Tampa) who knows how to prepare layoff horses.

THE BET $10 to win on (8) VINDICTA and a $2 exacta box with (10) CARUCA and                      (1) STRATOSPEHRA 1,8,10. Total Bet $22
GOOD LUCK

Gulfstream Thursday Carryovers; No Wednesday Racing

Gulfstream Park plans an 11-race card Thursday, with a first post of 1:15 PM.  There is no racing Wednesday, due to the festivities surrounding the Florida Derby and the Post Draw at 12:00 PM Noon at G.P.

Gulfstream will then race Thursday through Sunday; the Florida Derby Day is Saturday, March 30th. We'll update you on the field and post positions as we get closer to the race.

The Rainbow 6 carryover will be $2,455,349 when racing starts Thursday; the 6th race is the start of that wager; with an approx. post time of 3:45 PM. There are no stakes races planned.

In Sunday's racing results, 275 winners emerged on the Rainbow 6 wager, each pocketing $1,124.52 before taxes. Five favorites won on the day, with 3 of them in the final 6 races. The payout was small due to the low odds winners in the 6 races ranging from 1.3:1 to 3.8:1.  The Rainbow pool was half-a-million ($555,303), and total handle from all sources was $9.75 million.

As we hinted toward over the weekend, Gulfstream has announced a mandatory payout and minimum pool guarantees for the late wagers on Saturday. The Late Pick 4 guaranteed pool is set at $750,000, the Late Pick 5 at $500,000. The Super Hi-5 on the last race will pay on 4 of 5 or 3 of 5 also with no carryover after Saturday.

We think two long-odds wins will be needed for a single winner in the last 6 races on any race day.

The Late Pick 4 paid $99.86 and the Late Pick 5 paid $576.20.

The Super Hi-5 wager will show a carryover of $6,896 in the first race with 7 or more starters Thursday.

BAUER'S BETS: Fast & Firm at Tampa

A competitive field of seven four year-olds and up go nine grassy furlongs under $32,000 NW2X Optional Claiming conditions, in Race 6, Post is 3 PM.

(5) PATS SHOES is very sharp since being claimed by the red-hot Navarro outfit. He won his last race (taken off the grass) by twelve lengths and he is overdue to get his first win on the lawn.
Dan Centeno retains the mount.

THE BET $10 to win on (5) PATS SHOES and a $2 exacta box with (1) TIZ SAMURAI and (2) SARRASIN. 1,2,5. Total Bet $22 GOOD LUCK!

PREVIOUS RESULTS Lost $22 yesterday, the bankroll is now plus $107.60.

A 12-Race Sunday at Gulfstream; Carryovers

Gulfstream Park plans a 12-race card Sunday. First post is 1:10 PM. The last race gate will open about 6:40 PM.

The Rainbow 6 carryover will be $2,322,113 when racing starts Sunday; the 7th race is the start of that wager; with an approx. post time of 4:10 PM. There are 50 entries for those 6 races; 55 horses raced on Saturday.

On Saturday’s racing action, just 3 winners emerged on the Rainbow 6 wager, each pocketing $112,987 before taxes. Like Friday, just two winners were favorites on the day, and a 42:1 win by Raki  in race 10 was the outlier that made for the huge payday. As expected, the pool was $605,000 on the Rainbow bet.

There were 10 scratches in the Rainbow sequence to get to 55 starters. Interestingly, Race 7, which was out of the sequence (Rainbow was races 8-13), was won by Chief White Sox at 78:1, edging the favorite by a head. We think two long-odds wins will be needed for a single winner in the last 6 races on any race day.

The Late Pick 4 paid $27,117, and the Late Pick 5 paid $82,387 – kingly payouts to a few very lucky bettors.
The Super Hi-5 wager will show a carryover of $8,809 in the first race with 7 or more starters Sunday.

Good Luck, and don’t forget to subscribe – see top menu on this site.

BAUER'S BETS: Fast & Firm at Tampa

A field of eight older fillies and mares will travel a grassy mile and three-eighths in a $16,000 Handicap, in Race 6. Post time for this marathon on the lawn is 3:15 PM.

(3) HANIEL may be the lone early speed here and have an edge. There are a few unknowns because most of this group has never gone this distance. (3) HANIEL has run with good fields in Kentucky and has been freshened since November and has logged a pair of bullet works at the Classic Mile.

THE BET $10 to win on (3) HANIEL and a $2 exacta box with (6) AQUEMINI and (8) NICK'S ROSE 3,6,8.    Total Bet $22   GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS  Yesterday's win bet returned $42.50, had first and third in the exacta.
Made a profit of $5.50 for the day. The bankroll is now plus $129.60.

Saturday's Gulfstream - 13 Races; $2.2 Mill Pick 6 Jackpot

Gulfstream Park plans a 13-race card Saturday as we enter day 84 of the 89 day meet that will end March 31. First post is 12:45 PM, and - if you have the energy - the last race gate will open about 6:40 PM.

In between, look for nice weather under fast - firm conditions, and two stakes races: The Any Limit Stakes, $75,000 in race 6, and the Hutcheson, $100,000. Both are Grade II on the dirt track at 6 furlongs for 3 year olds.

The Rainbow 6 carryover will be $2,176,843 when racing starts Saturday; the 8th race is the start of that wager; with an approx. post time of 4:10 PM.

On Friday's racing results, 106 winners cashed their Rainbow 6 tickets for $2,511.42 each. Just two winners were favorites on the 10 race card, but the odds were low on the remaining races. We look for increased pool sizes with the "whales" entering the betting as this $2 million plus jackpot grows.

Sixty-Five entrants are listed on the card today for those six races; a tough hurdle to ferret out a single winning ticket.

Gulfstream  pays it out only when there is  just one ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races.

Gulfstream has six race days left in its 2018-2019 Championship meet.

A state law prohibits a pari-mutuel from extending a carryover into a new meet.

Thus, Gulfstream on or before March 31 will need to schedule a mandatory Rainbow 6 payout of the carryover  / jackpot even if there are multiple tickets with the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races.

If there is no single ticket winner prior to mandatory day, the carryover we esstimate could be $3 million or larger that day.

Gulfstream Friday: Rainbow 6 Carryover Tops $2 Million

The Rainbow 6 carryover at Gulfstream Park is  25 race  days old  and has grown to $2,062,710.

That carryover/jackpot will be up for grabs  on Friday.

First post is 1:15  p.m. for  a ten-race card. The Rainbow  6 is on races  five  to ten, with  the sequence  scheduled  to start  at  3:30 p.m.

The jackpot/carryover consists of the entire carryover plus 80 percent of the day’s  new bets on the Rainbow  6 (20  percent takeout).

Gulfstream  pays it out only when there is  just one ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races.

On Thursday, there were 830 tickets with all six winners.  Each was paid $260.44 on the 20-cent only bet.

Thursday’s wagering on the Rainbow 6 was $386,165.

Per  its  rules on days with multiple  winning tickets Gulfstream took out 20 percent of the day’s bet, divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners and added 24 percent to the  carryover.

The program numbers of the  six  winning horses were 5-3-9-3-6-2.

The payoff was relatively low because  four winners  were favorites and the other  two had odds of 7-2.

Gulfstream has seven race days left in its 2018-2019 championship meet, which ends on Sunday March  31.

A state law prohibits a pari-mutuel from extending a carryover  into a  new meet.

Thus, Gulfstream on or before March 31 will  need to schedule a mandatory Rainbow 6 payout of the carryover/jackpot even if there are multiple tickets with the winners of all  six Rainbow 6 races.

If there is no single ticket winner prior to mandatory day, the carryover could be $3 million or larger that day.

BAUER'S BETS: Fast & Firm at Tampa

This five-year old race mare has a record of seven wins from fourteen starts, including going five for seven at today's trip, five grassy furlongs. She makes her Tampa Debut with veteran Jose Ferrer up, who has won twice before with her on the lawn. This one is ultra-sharp now.

THE BET $25 to win on (4) BAND OF ANGELS and a $2 exacta box with (3) CRY UNCLE and (5) COASTAL SEA,     3,4,5            Total Bet $37 GOOD LUCK!!

Favorite Wins GP Rainbow 6 Opener

Makealittlemischief (5) , the 3-2 favorite, led at every call and won Thursday's fifth race at Gulfstream to start the Rainbow 6.

The carryover, 24 days old, was $1,970,071 coming into  the day. Bettors added $386,165 to the Rainbow 6 pool.

Luis Saez rode Makealittlemischief for trainer  Todd Pletcher in the 7  1/2 furlong maiden special turf race for  3-YO  fillies.  The winning time was  1:31.81.

Gulfstream Fast and Firm for Thursday

The dirt track is listed as fast  and the turf course is listed as firm for  Thursday's  ten-race card at Gulfstream Park.

First post is 1:15 p.m. for the program that has a Rainbow 6 carryover of  $1,970,071.

On Wednesday, Gulfstream moved all four  scheduled-for-turf races to  the dirt  following heavy rains on Tuesday  night and early Wednesday.

Five of Thursday's races are scheduled for turf. Those are the third, fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth races.

The Weather Channel  forecast is for just a 15 percent chance of rain during racing hours.

The Rainbow 6 will begin on the fifth race, with  a scheduled post of  3:15 p.m. The carryover has grown because Gulfstream has gone 24 straight race days without the jackpot/carryover payoff requirement of just one ticket with the  winners of all six Rainbow 6 races.

On Thursday morning, four horses were scratched from the Rainbow 6 races.  Those horses, with program numbers, are:

Fifth race -  Irish Princess (2)
Seventh  race -- Catoutofthebag (2)
Tenth race -- Bar Libre (1) and Livinadream (10)

That leaves the Rainbow 6 races with 46  entrants --a relatively  low number.

That  increases the chances that there will again be multiple winning  tickets, and an extension of  the carryover into Friday.

$2 Million Rainbow 6 Up for Grabs: Gulfstream's Thursday

Gulfstream Park will continue its Champions Meet Day #82 Thursday, with ten races and first post of 1:15 p.m.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot was not hit yesterday, and the carryover will be $1,970,071 today. Adding in approx. $250,000 to the pool today, the jackpot will be well over $2 million.

We think 2 or 3 highs odds horses winning in the 6 race sequence will be needed to garner just a single winning wager. Gulfstream may announce a mandatory payout on March 30th, Florida Derby Day, as it has in past years.

The Rainbow 6, a 20-cent per combination only bet, will be on races five to ten with the sequence scheduled  to start at 3:15 p.m.

The carryover has grown because Gulfstream has gone 24 straight race days without the jackpot payoff requirement of just one ticket with the winners of all six races.

The jackpot consists of the entire carryover plus 80 percent of the day’s new bets on the Rainbow 6 (20 percent takeout). In Wednesday’s action, all races were taken off the turf, and low odds winners were the norm.

The Rainbow 6 paid $667.42 to about 250 winners. Four of six legs were won by the favorites.

The Late Pick-4 paid $175.95, while the Late Pick-5 paid $213.95. Good Luck !

Wednesday at Gulfstream: Rainbow 6 Carryover is $1.9 Million

Gulfstream Park will resume live racing on Wednesday, with ten races and first post of 1:15 p.m.

The only carryover is on the Rainbow 6—and it is a whopping $1,900.013, or roughly $1.9 million.

The Rainbow 6, a 20-cent per combination only bet, will be on races  five  to ten with the sequence  scheduled  to start  at  3:15 p.m.

The carryover has grown because Gulfstream has gone 23 straight race days without the jackpot payoff requirement    of just one ticket with the winners of all six races.

The jackpot consists of the entire carryover plus 80 percent of the day’s  new bets on the Rainbow  6 (20  percent takeout).

On days with multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day’s new Rainbow 6 bets. Of that, it then divides 56 percent among winning tickets and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

Saturday's Gulfstream - 13 Races - $1.6 Million Rainbow Carryover

HorseRacingFLA Staff Report
Gulfstream Park will host a 13 race card Saturday, with a first post time of 12:45 PM. 118 starters are listed to run on the full card.

One stakes race is planned: the Inside Information Stakes in race 11. It’s a Grade II race for fillies and mares, 4 y/o and up on the dirt, with a $200,000 purse up for grabs. Tequilita, at 5:2 ML odds is the favorite in the 8 horse field. Post time is 5:37 PM.

On the carryover news, there are two carryovers Saturday. The Super Hi-5 wager ($1 minimum) in race 1 should play out with a $3,300 carryover if 7 starters race.

As our headline states, the Rainbow 6 continues to ramp up; now at $1,612,710 million. It was last hit for the jackpot February 15th, 21 racing days ago.

The kickoff will be in race 8 at approx. a 4:07 PM post time.
