Gulfstream Ends Championship Meet Today; Known Agenda Wins Florida Derby

Later on Sunday, we will begin a series of reports on Known Agenda's win on Saturday in the $750,000 Florida Derby (Grade 1) and other highlights of the closing weekend of the 2020-2021 championship meet.

The closing day Sunday card has twelve races. The Rainbow 6 will start on the seventh race, with scheduled post at 3:11 p.m. It is a 20 cents per combination-only bet.

There is a new pool on the Rainbow 6, and a mandatory payout of 80 percent of today's Rainbow 6 pool--no matter the number of tickets with all six winning horses. Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the the payout will be at least $200,000.

On Thursday, Gulfstream will begin its Spring-Summer meet with eight races and first post at 1:00 p.m. In that six-month meet, Gulfstream will have racing on Mondays through Thursdays/

In the Florida Derby, Known Agenda (photo on home page) passed Soup and Sandwich in the final half furlong and went on to beat that rival by 2 3/4 lengths. Greatest Honour finished third, three lengths behind Soup and Sandwich.

Known Agenda's victory earned him 100 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) that will  be run May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.  He has 102 points, and that total assures him a spot in the 20-horse field.

Soup and Sandwich, in only his third career start, earned 40 points.  That might be enough for him to get into the Kentucky Derby.

There are four remaining championship round prep races that, like the Florida Derby, offer Kentucky Derby qualifying points of 100, 40, 20 and ten points for the first four finishers.

Greatest Honour earned 20 qualifying points, raising his total to 80.  He earned ten points for winning the Holy Bull (Grade 3) and the Fountain of Youth (Grade 2)--both at Gulfstream.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST and FIRM at TAMPA

 By Bob Bauer

The Downs has ten races on the Saturday card. First Post time is 12:08 PM.

Today's play is in Race 8, Post time is scheduled for 3:34 PM. Four year old and up Fillies and Mares will travel a marathon eleven furlongs on the sod under $16,000 Handicap conditions. RadioStPete online live coverage, including legendary race caller Richard Grunder will start at 3:32.

ANTALYA (8) appears to be in top form now. This six year old Mare has taken a pair of $16,000 races this year on the local lawn in as many attempts. She woke  up with the addition of blinkers and jockey Issac Castillo. Her victories both came from off the pace at a mile and a mile and one-sixteenth, suggesting she should like the stretch out a mile and three-eighths. She owns the best late pace figure in this field and there should be enough speed here to give her a good closing setup.

THE BET  $10 win and place on ANTALYA (8) and a $2 exacta box with BELLA PIERENA (6) and CLASSY OF COURSE (1)  1,6,8               Total Bet $32   GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS  3/26  Lost $32, the bankroll is $750.90, from $1000 at the start.

Clear Skies Forecast for Florida Derby day

At Gulfstream Park today, the outlook is for  a rain chance less than five percent with temperatures in the 80's and the added excitement that the heavy favorite Greatest Honour will bring to the Florida Derby.

First post will be at 11:30 a.m. for a 14-race card, including ten stakes races. The $750,000 Florida Derby (Grade 1) will be the last race, with scheduled post at 6:40 p.m.

Tickets for Florida Derby day are sold out Gulfstream is limiting attendance to about 2,000 because of ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NBC Sports Network will have coverage of the Florida Derby between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Tampa Bay Downs and most other pari-mutuels in Florida and other states will have simulcast wagering on the Florida Derby and Gulfstream's other races.

Most Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) services will show and have betting on the Florida Derby and Gulfstream's other races.

Greatest Honour is among eleven entrants in the Florida Derby, at 1 1/8 miles on dirt for 3-year-olds.

The Shug McGaughey-trained colt is seeking to become the first horse to sweep Gulfstream's three graded  stakes prep races for the Kentucky Derby.

Greatest Honour won this year's Holy Bull (Grade 3) and Fountain of Youth (Grade 2)--both at 1 1/16 miles.

Those victories gave him 60 qualifying points for the 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby on May 1 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The cutoff point will probably be about 40 points for a spot in the field of 20 horses.

The Florida Derby is final round points qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby. The first four finishers will earn 100, 40, 20 and 10 points respectively.

All of the ten other Florida Derby starters will need to finish second or better to earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby.

Starting later this morning and until early evening, our coverage for Florida Derby day will  be almost entirely on this blog.

Gulfstream's Mandatory Payout on Rainbow 6 Starts with Carryover of $951,991

Gulfstream Park on Saturday will have a mandatory payout on its Rainbow 6 jackpot, and the pool will start with a carryover of $951,991.

Gulfstream is estimating that about $7.5 million will be bet on the Rainbow 6, which will be on races nine to fourteen on its Florida Derby day card.

The sequence is scheduled to start at 3:37 p.m. on the Rainbow 6, which is a 20 cents per combination-only bet. First post on Saturday is 11:30 a.m.

The jackpot is made up of the entire coming-in carryover plus 80 percent of the day's bets on the Rainbow 6.

The attraction on Saturday is that Gulfstream will pay out the jackpot--no matter the number of tickets with all six winners in the Rainbow 6.

On non-mandatory days, it pays out the jackpot only if there is just one ticket with all six winners.

On non-mandatory days with multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet. It then divides 56 percent among tickets with six winners and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

On Friday the coming-in carryover was $871,173. Bettors added $332,922 to the pool.

Each ticket with all six winners paid $246.28 on a 20 cent bet.

HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows there were 766 such tickets.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 2-1-2-1-2-1. Odds on the winners were 9-2 or lower.

GP Rainbow 6: Carryover is $871,173 on Friday; Mandatory Payout on Sunday

One highlight of Saturday's Florida Derby day card at Gulfstream Park will be a mandatory payout  of the Rainbow 6 jackpot--regardless of the number of tickets with all six winning horses.

That jackpot consists of the entire Rainbow 6 carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bets (20 percent carryover). It is a 20 cents per combination-only bet.

For Saturday there is the prospect--based on Gulfstream wagering history--that the Rainbow 6 will have a carryover in the $1 million range and that betting on the Rainbow 6 could be as much as $10 million.

Whether that happens will depend on Rainbow results on Friday, when Gulfstream will go into the day with a Rainbow 6 carryover of $871,173.

Friday is a day without a mandatory payout. So, if there are multiple tickets with all six winning horses Gulfstream will take out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet. It will then divide 56 percent among tickets with six winners and add 24 percent to the carryover.

If Friday has just one ticket with all six winning horses, that ticket would take down the full Rainbow 6 jackpot.

In that case, there will be no coming-in carryover on Saturday. But Rainbow 6 wagering might still be around $1 million because 80 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bets, rather than the standard 56 percent,  will be paid to tickets with six winners.

Friday's Rainbow 6 is on races five through ten, with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:11 p.m.

Gulfstream will have fourteen races on Saturday, with first post of 11:30 p.m.

The Rainbow 6 will begin on the ninth race, with scheduled post of 3:37 p.m.

The Florida Derby (Grade 1) will be the 14th and final race, with scheduled post of 6:40  p.m.

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the pools will be at least $750,000 on the Late Pick 5 and the Late Pick 4.  If betting is less than $750,000 Gulfstream will put in the difference.

GP to Draw for Florida Derby on Wednesday; Nine Other Stakes Races on Saturday Card

By Jim Freer

Gulfstream Park will have the $750,000 Florida Derby and nine other stakes races on Saturday March 27.

HorseRacingFLA will have previews throughout this week and coverage on Saturday.

First post is 11:30 a.m. for Saturday's 14-race card.

Tickets for Saturday are sold out. Because of ongoing concern about possible spread of COVID-19, Gulfstream is limiting attendance to about 2,000 on most days.

Information about ticket availability on other days may be obtained by calling the Gulfstream Park Box Office at (954) 457-6201.

The post position draw will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

It will be streamed  live on Gulfstream's Web Site https://www.gulfstreampark.com/

The Saturday race schedule will be announced at the draw.  The Florida Derby will probably be the 14th race.

Watching and Wagering

Tampa Bay Downs is among pari-mutuels that will have simulcast wagering on the Florida Derby and Gulfstream's other Saturday races.

Gulfstream will carry all of its Saturday races live on its Web site, which does not have betting.

Most Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) services will show the Gulfstream races and have betting on them.

That list of ADWs includes 1st.com.bet and Xpressbet, both owned by Gulfstream's parent The Stronach Group. TwinSpires. TVG and DRFBets also will carry Gulfstream's Saturday races.

The Florida Derby is 1 1/8 miles on dirt for 3-year-olds. Gulfstream officials expect that as many as ten horses will be in the race.

It is a final round points qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1), to be run May 1 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The first four Florida Derby finishers will earn 100, 40, 20 and 10 points respectively.

It is likely that at least 40 points will be needed to gain one of the twenty  spots in the Kentucky  Derby, which is 1 1/4  miles on dirt.

Probable Field

Gulfstream is listing Greatest Honour, Spielberg, Papetu, Known Agenda, Nova Rags, Collaborate, Soup and Sandwich, Quantum Leap, Jirafales and Siglioso as probable Florida Derby starters.

Greatest Honour, trained by Shug McGaughey, will come into the Florida Derby with 60 qualifying points and is almost certain to have a spot in the Kentucky Derby.

He earned ten points when he won the Holy Bull (Grade 3) and fifty points when he won the Fountain of Youth (Grade 2). Both races were 1 1/16  miles on dirt at Gulfstream.

Spielberg, with 17, and Papetu, with ten, are the only other horses among the ten Florida Derby candidates that have ten or more Kentucky Derby points.

Papetu, trained by Antonio  Sano, earned ten points with a  third place finish in the Fountain of Youth.

Drain the Clock finished second in the Fountain of Youth and earned 20 points. He led that race until Greatest Honour  passed him in deep stretch.

Drain the Clock is not entered in the Florida Derby. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has said that he expects to cut that colt back to one turn in his next several starts.

Spielberg, trained by Bob Baffert, is shipping in from California for the Florida Derby.

Spielberg is one of four horses that Baffert has been running in Kentucky Derby preps.

The others and their point totals are Life Is Good (60), Concert Tour (50) and Medina Spirit (34).

Baffert is putting them in different races, when possible, to keep them from competing for qualifying points.

Life Is Good suffered a hind leg injury on Sunday while training at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

Later on Sunday, Baffert said Life Is Good will not be able to run in the Santa Anita Derby (Grade 1) on April 6 or in the Kentucky Derby.

Rainbow 6

On Saturday, Gulfstream will have a mandatory payout of its jackpot on the Rainbow 6--regardless of the number of tickets with all  six winning horses.

The jackpot consists of the entire coming-in carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bets (the takeout is 20 percent).

Gulfstream usually pays out the jackpot only on days when there is just one ticket with all six winners.

On non-mandatory days when there are multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet. It then divides 56 percent among tickets with the most winners (usually six) and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

The Rainbow 6 is a 20 cents per-combination only bet. On Saturday, it will be on races nine through fourteen.

When Gulfstream resumes racing on Wednesday, it will have a Rainbow 6 carryover of $735,873.

If the Rainbow 6 is not hit by just one ticket on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday the carryover will probably be about $1.1 million on Saturday.  In that case, we expect that  as much  as $10 million could be bet on the Rainbow 6.

Last year, Gulfstream's total handle on Florida  Derby day was $53,841,165 for fourteen races.  That is the all-time record for Gulfstream, except for the three days when it had the Breeders' Cup races--in 1989, 1992 and 1999.

Florida Derby day last year was Saturday March 28--one of the first days when several U.S. thoroughbred tracks did not have racing because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The reduced competition led to increases in ADW and simulcast betting on the attractive Gulfstream card.

Last year, there also was a mandatory payout on the Rainbow on Florida Derby day.  The coming-in carryover was $1,664,906. Wagering on the Rainbow 6 was $9,211,773.

Gulfstream's previous non-Breeders' Cup total handle record  was $49,909,710 on March 31, 2018 which was Florida Derby day with fourteen races.

Gulfstream Rainbow 6 Starts With Win by 9-1 Shot

Uncle Fun (7), at 9-1, won Sunday's sixth race at Gulfstream Park to start the Rainbow 6.

The carryover coming in was $616,937. Bettors added $493,570 to the Rainbow 6 pool.

GP: Turf Course Record Set; Carryover is $616,937; Pacific Gale Wins Hurricane Bertie

Gulfstream Park has an 11-race card  on Sunday with first post of 12:40 p.m.

The Rainbow 6 has a carryover of $616,937. The 20 cents per combination-only bet will be on races six to eleven with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:11 p.m.

Here are highlights of Saturday's racing at Gulfstream.

Turf Course Record

Vow Me Now set a Gulfstream turf course record of 1:26.25  for 7 1/2 furlongs in winning the 12th and final race.

The previous record was 1:26.78, set by Smokem Kitten in an allowance/optional claiming race on March 20, 2016.

Vow Me Now, a 5-year-old gelding, led at every call and won by  2 1/4 lengths over Outshine  who was second at every call. Angel Arroyo rode Vow Me Now for trainer Eddie Plesa  Jr.

The course was listed as Firm, and is dry following several weeks with very little rain.  On Saturday, several other winning turf times were very fast. Five of seven turf races were won by horses that led at every call.

Saturday's race was a $16,000  claimer.  It was the first race for Vow Me Now since July 6, 2019.  Earlier that year, he won two overnight turf stakes at Gulfstream.

The win on Saturday was the sixth in twelve career starts for Vow Me Now, a son of Broken Vow.

Vow Me Now was sent off at 6-1, the fourth lowest odds in Saturday's ten-horse field.  He earned an Equibase Speed figure of 103, his highest ever.

Vow Me  Now is owned by David Melin, Leon Ellman and Laurie Plesa.

As mentioned above, there is an ton of early speed signed on here. At least half the runners in this group appear to be need to lead types, an early pace duel is expected and a closer should benefit. ROCK THE PARK (4) has won two in a row at today's distance under Ron Allen Jr. and is a good bet at 6/1 on the morning line to score again. This four year old Gelding is a versatile presser who earned the top speed and late pace figs in this field last time out. He should be rolling in deep stretch.

THE BET  $10 Win and Place on ROCK THE PARK (4) and a $2 exacta box with CAMPAIGN SPY (6) and FOURTH DESIGN (8).    4,6,8.    Total Bet $32   GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS  3/14  Had the win bet, although it was pounded down to slightly more than 2/1 from 6/1 on the morning line. Missed the exacta, collected $34 on $32 in bets. The bankroll is now $594.10

Irad Ortiz Serving Five-Day Suspension; Rainbow 6 Carryover is $315,073

After being dark this Monday and Tuesday, Gulfstream Park will resume racing on Wednesday with ten races and  first post at 1:10 p.m.

The only carryover is on the Rainbow 6 , at $315,073. The 20 cents per combination-only bet is on races five through ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:11 p.m.

An important note for handicappers is that Irad Ortiz Jr., who leads jockeys in victories at Gulfstream's 2020-2021 championship meet, will not be at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

Ortiz will be serving the third day of a five-day suspension that Gulfstream stewards handed down on him because of an incident in a race on March 5.

Ortiz's next scheduled mounts are on Saturday March 20 at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, on a multiple graded stakes day.

It is anticipated that Ortiz will resume riding at Gulfstream on Sunday March 21.

Even though he is missing six days at Gulfstream, he has enough wins to assure a third straight championship meet  title. That 84-day meet will end on March 28.

Ortiz has 131wins and he will have a chance to break the all-time Gulfstream meet record of 137, which Luis Saez set in 2018-2019.

Ortiz is a 27-year-old native of Puerto Rico. He won the Eclipse  Award as top jockey for 2019 and 2020.

In the second race on March 5, Ortiz's mount Passion Plus veered out entering the stretch and bumped into one  horse that bumped into another.

Passion Plus won the race. Stewards conducted an inquiry,  but took no action on the result. They suspended Ortiz several days later.

That incident and the suspension are not connected to a confrontation that Ortiz had with jockey Paco Lopez at Gulfstream on Feb 26.

In that day's fourth race Known Agenda, ridden by Ortiz, was pulling ahead of Top Gun Tommy, ridden by Lopez, in the final turn.

Known Agenda moved out  slightly, and was brushed from behind by Top Gun Tommy.

Known Agenda went on to win by eleven lengths in the 1 1/8 mile allowance/optional claiming race for 3-year-olds.

As Ortiz rode Known Agenda toward  the winner's circle, he was screaming at Lopez.

Lopez filed an objection, which the stewards disallowed.

After making a phone call to the stewards, Lopez was in a chair near the winner's circle.

Ortiz approached Lopez and surprised him with three punches--a right to the jaw, followed by a left and then another right to the sides of his head.

Gulfstream fined Ortiz $1,000 for the incident. It put Ortiz and  Lopez on probation for the remainder of the championship meet.

Lopez told the Daily  Racing Form that he did not fight back because he was concerned about a possible suspension.

He has a history of Gulfstream stewards suspending him for careless riding, several times for 30 days.

Meet Standings

Wednesday is the 75th day of the 84-day Gulfstream championship meet.

Irad Ortiz Jr, leads jockeys with 131 victories.

Tyler Gaffalione is second with 86 wins. He is followed by Luis Saez with 85 and Lopez with 83.

Edgard  Zayas is fifth with 67 wins. Jose Ortiz, Irad's younger brother, is sixth with 47.

Defending champion Todd Pletcher leads trainers with 52 wins. Saffie Joseph Jr. is second with 45, followed by Mike Maker with 39.

Rainbow 6

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the payoff on the Rainbow 6 will be at  least $600,000, including all of the coming-in carryover,  if there is just  one  ticket with all six winners

On Sunday, the Rainbow 6 paid  $16,386.52  on the 20 cent bet. HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows there were eleven tickets with all six winners,

Per its rules on days with multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream took out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet. It then divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners and added 24 percent to the carryovcr.

Today's   feature at Tampa Bay Downs is  the eighth race.

It is a $33,000 Handicap for four year old and up, and appears to be a tough contest. A salty field of seven will spar at a mile on the sod. Bettors could make a case for every runner here.

Post time is scheduled for 3:48 PM, live coverage on RadioStPete starts at 3:45, including the call of legendary announcer Richard Grunder.

ATONE (2) is the choice here, as this colt was a perfect two for two on the Tampa turf before finishing seventh in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes. He gets some class relief today and his record (3 for 7 lifetime) suggests we might not have seen this one's best yet. He owns the best late pace fig here and can nail the speed, which may give him a good set-up. Journeyman rider Tomas Mejia has guided him to a pair of grass victories from three tries and returns in the irons.

Due Partly to Quarantine, GP Rainbow 6 Paid Just 51.34 on Wednesday

Partly because of a  one-day quarantine of two barns, the Gulfstream Park Rainbow 6 paid just $51.34 on a 20 cent-only bet on Wednesday.

That was one of the ten-lowest payoffs on the Rainbow 6 since HorseRacingFLA began tracking Gulfstream handle in August 2015.

Gulfstream put the two barns under quarantine on Tuesday night, after a horse in one barn was euthanized because of neurological problems.

According to a report in Bloodhorse, Gulfstream put the barns under quarantine as a precaution because of concern that the horse might have been infected with EVH-1. That is an equine herpes virus that is contagious and can result in respiratory and neurological disorders.

On Wednesday afternoon, Gulfstream determined that the euthanized horse did not have EVH-1, and it lifted the quarantine.

Last weekend, two horses in Maryland, including one at Laurel Park, were detected with theVH-1 virus

The Laurel, Md.,  track put two barns under quarantine and has cancelled its race card for Friday.

Laurel Park and Gulfstream are owned by The Stronach Group. Because of Laurel's cancellation there will be no Stronach 5 bet on Friday. That $1 minimum bet is offered on most Fridays--with races at Gulfstream, Laurel and either Santa Anita Park or Golden Gate Fields.

On Wednesday, the ten-race card at Gulfstream had fourteen scratches with most of them attributable to the quarantine.

There were only 36 horses  in the six Rainbow 6 races.  Four winners were even-money or lower, one was 5-2 and one was 9-2.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 6-5-4-2-7-2.

Wednesday was the start of a new Rainbow 6 cycle, following a mandatory payout on Sunday.

Betting on the Rainbow 6 was $172,272. Gulfstream took our 20 percent, divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners and put 24 percent into a new carryover.

HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts indicates there were 1,879  winning tickets.

Gulfstream has a ten-race card on Thursday with first post of 1:10 p.m. The Rainbow 6 will be on races five through ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:11 p.m.

Gulfstream: New Rainbow 6 Pool on Wednesday

After  being dark on Monday and Tuesday, Gulfstream Park will resume  racing on Wednesday with ten races and first post of 1:10 p.m.

This link to the Equibase Web site has the Gulfstream entries for Wednesday. It has click-ons for handicapping material. Some is free. Some, including past performances, is at cost.

There is a new pool  on the Rainbow 6, following a  mandatory payout on Sunday.  The 20 cents per combination-only bet will be on races five to ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:11 p.m.

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the pool will  be at least $150,000 if there is just one ticket with the winners of all six races--meaning that it would put money in if the Rainbow 6 bet is less than $150,000.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & FIRM at TAMPA

By Bob Bauer

First post is 12:15 p.m. for Wednesday's nine-race card at Tampa Bay Downs.

The first race has  carryover of $6,565 on the Super Hi-5.

It is a $5,000 claiming race at six furlongs on dirt for 4-YOs and up that have not won a race since Sept. 1, 2020.  There are eight entrants.

The Pick 6 has a carryover of $14,945.  The 20 cents per combination-only bet is on races three to nine, with the sequence scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m.

Today's feature is Race 5, Post time is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. A compact but competitive field of older Fillies and Mares will travel a grassy mile under $32,000 NW2X Optional Claiming conditions.

RadioStPete live coverage, including the call of legendary announcer Richard Grunder starts at 2:13.

DUTCHESS OF SUSSEX (7) from the Graham Motion barn, one of the top turf outfits in the country, is the choice here. This classy four year old Filly was last seen wiring a NW1X Allowance field here at Tampa, earning the top turf fig in this group. Her prior turf attempt was a good second in an overnight Stake at Deleware park. She has been rested for a month and goes a flat mile here, half a furlong less than her last victory. A lot to like here. But as a namesake to Meghan Markle, it is doubtful that we will see this one at Royal Ascot some day.

THE BET   $20 to win DUTCHESS OF SUSSEX (7) and a $5 exacta box with NO WAY JOSE (1) 1,7. Also a $2 exacta box with LADY FATIMA (2) 1,2,7.   Total Bet $42  GOOD LUCK

Mandatory Payout on Gulfstream Rainbow 6 Yields More Than 4,000 Winning Tickets

A mandatory jackpot payout attracted $5,474,357 in wagers on Gulfstream Park's Rainbow 6 on Sunday.

It was the fourth time that the popular multi-race bet has surpassed $5 million, all on mandatory payouts, during Gulfstream's 2020-2021championship meet.

And with all winning horses coming in at odds of 6-1or lower, an unprecedented number of tickets had all six winners.

Each of those tickets won $1,140.92 on a 20-cent bet. As detailed below, HorseRacingFLA's research indicates there were 4,604 such tickets.

After being dark on Monday  and Tuesday, Gulfstream will begin a new Rainbow 6 pool on Wednesday.

First post will be 1:10 p.m. for a ten-race card.

The Rainbow 6 will be on races five to ten. The sequence is scheduled to start at 3:11 p.m. on the 20  cents per combination-only bet.

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the Rainbow 6 pool will be at least $150,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winners.

In its news release on Sunday's results, Gulfstream reported that there were "multiple tickets"  with all six winning horses in the Rainbow 6. Per usual, its news release did not provide the number of tickets.

HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts indicates there were 4,604 winning Rainbow 6 tickets. Our data base that goes back to August 2015 shows that was the most winning tickets ever on a mandatory Rainbow 6 payout day. It was among the the ten highest in the entire data  base.

Program numbers of the six winning horses, in races six to eleven, were 3-7-6-3-9-2.

Because Sunday was a "mandatory" day Gulfstream divided the Rainbow 6  jackpot among all tickets with six winners.

The jackpot consists  of 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bets plus the entire coming-in carryover. The bet has a 20 percent takeout.

Gulfstream usually pays out the jackpot only on days when there is just one ticket with all six winners.

For mandatory payout days, which it usually begins publicizing three days in advance on its Web  site and in racing publications, Gulfstream makes that payout no matter the number of tickets with six winners.

For Sunday's card, the coming-in carryover was $873,676. Gulfstream combined all of that carryover and 80 percent of the new bet into a pool that totaled  $5,253,562. It then divided that money among the more than 4,600 winning tickets.

On most day with multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent then divides 56 percent of the day's bet among tickets and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

The Rainbow 6 carryover for Sunday had grown over ten days with multiple winning tickets.

Based on Gulfstream's recent betting history, the track's management anticipates that the large carryover will lure in about $5 million in new Rainbow 6 bets.

The Rainbow 6 is on races six to eleven with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:10 p.m.

Gulfstream: Three Stakes Races on Saturday; Mandatory Rainbow 6 Payoff on Sunday

HRFLA Staff Report

A  trio of stakes races and a $775,105 carryover on the Rainbow 6 will be the major attractions at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

First post will be 12:10 p.m. for a twelve-race card.

The Rainbow 6 will be on races seven to  twelve, with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:10 p.m. It is a 20 cents per combination-only bet that requires picking the winners of each of the final six races.

On Sunday, Gulfstream will have a mandatory payout on the Rainbow 6 jackpot/carryover--no matter the number of tickets with all six wining horses. If the carryover continues into Sunday, we expect it will draw in more than $5 million in new bets on Sunday. (Details maybe found later in this story.)

This link to the Equibase Web site has the Gulfstream entries for Saturday. It has click-ons for handicapping material. Some is free.  Some, including Past Performances, is at cost.

Open for Fans

Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach, Fla., is again open to fans.  But Gulfstream is limiting attendance to 2,000 as it continues its efforts to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Tickets, starting at $11, are required for admission. Details, including ticket availability, may be obtained by calling the Gulfstream box office at (954) 457-6201.

Gulfstream was closed entirely to spectators or open on just a limited basis from last March 15 through  late last month.

Rainbow 6

On Friday, each ticket with all six Rainbow 6 winners were paid  $1,545.80 on a 20 cent bet.

HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows there were 120 winning tickets.

Program numbers of the six winning horses were 3-6-6-5-1-4.

Wagering was $331,180 on the Rainbow 6.

Per its rules on most days with multiple wining tickets, Gulfstream took out 20 percent of the new bets.  It then divided 56 percent among tickets with the moat winners  and added 24 percent to the carryover.

The Rainbow 6  jackpot is made up of the entire carryover and 80 percent of the new Rainbow 6 bets.

Gulfstream usually pays it out only on days when there is just one ticket with all six winners.

On a mandatory day such as this Sunday, Gulfstream pays out the jackpot no matter the number of winning tickets.

Gulfstream history shows that when a carryover reaches $700,000--and Gulfstream promotes it several days in advance--it will draw $5 million or more in new Rainbow 6 bets.

If there is just one ticket that takes down the jackpot on Saturday, there will be a mandatory payout on Sunday with a new pool,

The prospect of an 80 percent payout from that new money likely would draw in about $1 million in bets.
