Rainbow 6 Coming Up at Off-Turf Gulfstream

The fifth race is coming up on Sunday's ten-race card at Gulfstream Park, and for the third straight day races have been taken off the turf.

For Sunday, all three scheduled-for-turf races have been moved to the dirt track, which is listed  as Fast.

There has been no  rain this afternoon at Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach, Fla. But the turf course is still drying out from heavy rain earlier this week.

The fifth race, with scheduled post of 2:56 p.m. will start the Rainbow 6. There will  be  a new pool on the 20 cents per  combination-only bet.

On Saturday, Gulfstream had a mandatory payout on the Rainbow 6.

Details are in a story posted early this morning with the  title |"GP Mandatory Rainbow 6 Pays Out $567.80."

This link to the Equibase Web site has the Gulfstream scratches for Sunday. It has click-ons for handicapping materials.  Some is free. Some, including Past Performances, is at cost. The link will update for scratches and other changes.

On Friday. Gulfstream moved all three of its scheduled turf races to dirt.

In the prior 44 days if its spring/summer meet, Gulfstream moved  just one race  off the turf. That took place during a very dry spring in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.

On Saturday, Gulfstream kept just one of five scheduled-for turf races on that surface.

That was the $75,000 Not Surprising Stakes, at one mile for 3-year-olds.

Fighting Force, at 6-1 won by 3 1/4 lengths over 23-1shot Perfect Silent Cat.

Samy Camacho rode Fighting Force for trainer Jeff Engler. The winning time was 1:38.18 on the turf listed as yielding.

Gulfstream Off the Turf for Sunday

There will be no turf racing at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.

Gulfstream has moved the day's three scheduled-for turf races to the dirt track that is listed as Fast.

Those races are the first, fifth and tenth.

First post is 12:50 p.m. for a ten-race card.

We will have an expanded version of this story later this morning on this  blog.

GP Mandatory Rainbow 6 Pays Out $567.80

Gulfstream Park on Saturday had a mandatory payout on its Rainbow 6, and it paid $567.80 on the 20-cent only bet.

Gulfstream did not disclose the number of winning tickets (all six winning horses). HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows there were 4,742 winning tickets.

Program numbers of the winning horses, in races seven to twelve, were 1-4-2-1-5-2.

Four of the winners were favorites, and the highest odds winner was 6-1.  That was a main reason for the relatively low Rainbow 6 payout and the large number of winning tickets.

The Hallandale Beach, Fla., track will begin a new Rainbow 6 pool on Sunday.

First post will be 12:50 p.m. for a ten-race  card that has no stakes races. The Rainbow 6 will be on races five to ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:56 p.m. It is a 20 cents per combination-only bet.

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the payout will be at least  $50,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winning horses. If Rainbow 6 betting is less than $50,000, Gulfstream will put in the difference.

On Saturday, the coming in carryover was $464,803. Bettors added $2,784,823 to the Rainbow 6 pool. Gulfstream had projected that betting on the Rainbow 6 would be at least $2 million.

The attraction was that in the mandatory payout Gulfstream returns and divides up the entire carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bet among all tickets with six winners.

On days without a mandatory payout, Gulfstream makes that jackpot payoff only if there is just one ticket with all six winning horses.

If there are multiple winning tickets on a non-mandatory day, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the bet and then divides 56 percent among tickets with the most winners (usually six) and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

Favorite Wins First Leg of GP Rainbow 6

Personal Meadow (1), the  4-5 favorite, won Saturday's seventh race at Gulfstream to start the Rainbow 6 with a mandatory payout.

Fuego Caliente (4), at 6-1, won the eighth race to continue them Rainbow 6 and start the Late Pick 5.

The Rainbow 6 carryover coming in was $464,803.  Bettors added $2,784,627 to the Rainbow 6, which is a 20  cents per  combination-only bet.

The jackpot will be the combination of 80 percent  of the new bet and the entire carryover.

The total will be just  under $2.7 million. In its mandatory payout, Gulfstream will divide that money among all tickets with the six winning horses.

On non-mandatory days, Gulfstream pays out the Rainbow 6 jackpot only when there is just one ticket with all six winners. If there are multiple tickets with all six winners on such days, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's bet and divides 56 percent among winning tickets while adding 24 percent to the  carryover.

We will have more results at the end of today's racing,

Gulfstream Off the Turf as Rainbow 6 Looms

Due to lingering wet conditions, all of Gulfstream Park's remaining races that were scheduled for dirt have been moved to the dirt track that is listed as Fast.

The seventh race, which will start the Rainbow 6 with  a mandatory payout, has a scheduled post of 3:23 p.m.

The eighth, tenth and twelfth races have been taken off the turf.

This link to the EquibaseWeb site has the latest scratches.

Gulfstream on Turf for Mandatory Rainbow 6

Gulfstream Park has a mandatory payout on its Rainbow 6 on Saturday, and it will start with a carryover of $464,803.

Gulfstream officials expect that the large carryover will enhance the "all of it must go" attraction and lead to wagering of at least $2 million on the  Rainbow 6.

First post will be 12:20 p.m. for a 12-race card.  The Rainbow 6 will be on races seven to twelve with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:23 p.m.

Well prior to the start of the Rainbow 6, we will have a story that includes Gulfstream analyst Ron Nicoletti's Rainbow 6 selections.

That story and most of our other reports on Gulfstream today will be  exclusively on this blog.

Our coverage will include the $75,000 Not Surprising Stakes at one mile on turf for 3-YOs. It is the fourth race and not part of the Rainbow 6.

The day will start with the dirt listed as Fast and the turf listed as Good.

The second race has been moved from turf to dirt.

As of 11:30 a.m., races four, eight, ten and twelve remain listed for turf.

On Friday, Gulfstream  moved all four of its scheduled-for-turf races to the dirt track that was listed as Muddy--following several days of rain.

As of 11:30 a.m. Saturday, skies were were partly cloudy and no rain was falling at Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The  Weather Channel forecast is for the chance of rain to increase from 15 percent to 40 percent during racing hours.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is made up of the entire coming-in carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bets.

Gulfstream usually  pays out the jackpot only if there is just one ticket with all six winners in the Rainbow6. On Saturday, it will divide the jackpot payout among all tickets with the six winning horses.

On non-mandatory days when there is not just one ticket with all six winners, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow  6 bets. It then divides 56 percent among tickets with the most winners (usually six) and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

Gulfstream Off the Turf on Friday

Because of wet conditions from recent days' rains ,  there will be no turf racing at Gulfstream Park on Friday.

The second, fourth, seventh and ninth races have been moved to the  dirt track that is listed as Muddy.

First post is 2:00 p.m. for the a nine-race card.

The Weather Channel forecast is for a 15 percent chance of rain during racing hours at Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

This link to the Equibase Web site has the Gulfstream entries for Friday.  It has  a click-on for scratches and changes, and it will update.  It also has click-ons for handicapping material.  Some is free. Some, including past performances is at cost,.

Gulfstream Resumes with Ten Friday Races; Mandatory Rainbow 6 Payout on Saturday

Gulfstream Park will begin three straight days of  racing on Friday--starting a weekend that will include Saturday's  mandatory payout on the Rainbow 6 jackpot/carryover.

If the carryover extends into Saturday, the Rainbow 6 pool likely will be between $3 million and $4 million.

On Friday, the Hallandale Beach, Fla,, track will have nine races  and first post of 2:00 p.m.

The Friday  carryover on the Rainbow 6 will be $432,027. The 20 cents per combination-only bet will be on races four to nine with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.

If Friday's Rainbow 6 is not taken down (i.e. just one ticket with all six winning horses)  the carryover will continue and likely will be about $600,000 on Saturday.

In that situation, Gulfstream history indicates that approximately $3 million will  be bet on  the Rainbow 6. That is about ten timers the  amount that  would be bet on a day without a mandatory payout.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is made up of the entire coming-in carryover  plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bets.

On Saturday, Gulfstream will pay  it all out regardless of the number of tickets with all six winning horses.

On non-mandatory days, such as Friday, Gulfstream pays out the jackpot only if there is just one ticket with all six winners.

Otherwise on non-mandatory days, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bet. It divides 56  percent among tickets with the most winners (usually six) and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

The carryover has grown because Gulfstream has gone thirteen straight race days without the jackpot payoff requirement of just one ticket with all six winning  horses.

On Saturday, Gulfstream will have twelve races with first post at 12:20 p.m. The Rainbow  6 will be on races seven to twelve, with the sequence scheduled to begin at 3:23 p.m.

The fourth race is the $75,000 Not Surprising, at one mile on turf for -year olds. It is this weekend's only stakes race at Gulfstream.

On Sunday, Gulfstream will have ten races with first  post of 12:50 p.m. There will be a new Rainbow 6 pool, beginning on the fifth race.

GP's Martha Washington Won by 33-1 Shot; Rainbow 6 Carryover is $367,284

Gulfstream Park's ten-race Sunday card has a carryover of $367,824 on the Rainbow 6.

The 20 cents per combination-only bet is on races five to ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:56 p.m.

Conditions are listed as Fast and Firm. There are no stakes races on the card.

On Saturday. the 33-1 shot Starship Nterprise rallied to beat the 9-5 favorite Karakatsie   by a neck in the $75,000 Martha Washington Stakes.

The Martha Washington was one mile on turf for 3-YO fillies and was the day's eleventh and next to last race at Gulfstream.

Starship Nterprise's win was a main reason there were no tickets with all six winning horses in the Rainbow 6.

So, Gulfstream made its non-jackpot payoff to all tickets that had five of six winners.

Each of those tickets was paid $1,998.76 on the 20 cent bet.

HorseRacingtFLA's review of Equibase charts shows there were nine such tickets.

Program numbers of the six winning horses were 5-9-2-3-6-6.

Saturday's wagering on the Rainbow  6 was $178,478. Of that, Gulfstream took out 20 percent. It then divided 56 percent among the tickets with five winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

The carryover has been growing because Gulfstream has gone 12 days without the jackpot/carryover full payout requirement of just one ticket with  all six winners.

Later on Sunday, we will have  a recap of the Martha Washington and other Gulfstream news.

Rainbow 6 Coming up at Gulfstream

The seventh race is coming up  at Gulfstream Park, with scheduled post of 3:23 p.m.

It will start the Rainbow 6 with a carryover of $349,994.

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the jackpot payout will be at least $600,000 if there is just one ticket  with all six  winners.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is made up of 80 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet and the entire carryover.

Thus if the Rainbow 6 is hit today, the new bets will need to total about $310,000 or Gulfstream will need to put in some of its own money.

Gulfstream Begins Installing Tapeta Course

HRFLA  Staff Report

Gulfstream Park on Monday began installing a synthetic racing surface.

The new Tapeta  track will be the third racing surface at Gulfstream, along with its dirt track and turf course.

The Tapeta track will be positioned over what is currently the outer third of the turf course. That course is 170 feet wide on the straightaways and considerably wider on the turns.

To allow for the installation of the Tapeta surface, Gulfstream has cut back beginning this week from a four-day race week to a three-day race week of Friday through Sunday.

Gulfstream said that work on the third racing surface is expected to continue through August. Turf racing will continue throughout the project, except at races for five furlongs.

The Silks simulcasting area will remain open seven days a week.

Tapeta is one of several synthetic or "all weather" surfaces that are in use at horse tracks in the United States, Canada and other nations. It is a mix of sand, wax and fibers--with no dirt.

Gulfstream will schedule races on Tapeta. When races are taken off turf due to wet conditions, Gulfstream will usually move them to Tapeta.

Gulfstream's dirt track is 1 1/8 miles in circumference.

The Gulfstream turf  course is seven/eighths of a mile in circumference at the rail.

Gulfstream has said that the turf course will remain wide enough for it to continue to use portable posts each day for turf races at two rail settings.

In addition to the Tapeta project, Gulfstream is renovating the drainage system on the inside of the turf course and is installing a new infield tote board.

GP Resumes Thursday With Two Carryovers; Two Live Stakes, Belmont Simulcast on Saturday

Gulfstream Park will begin four straight days of racing on Thursday, with nine races and first post of 12:50 p.m.

The first race has a  carryover of $5,093 on the Super Hi-5.  It is a $70,000 Maiden Special Weight at five furlongs on turf for 2-year-olds.

It is a $1 minimum bet that requires picking the first  five finishers in correct order with no consolation payoff such as four of five. If there are no winning tickets, 83 percent of the bet is added to the carryover.

Gulfstream has the Super HI-5 on all races with seven or more starters.

The carryover on the Rainbow 6 is $62,635. The 20 cents per combination-only  bet is on races four to nine with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:25 p.m.

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the jackpot payout on the Rainbow 6 will be at least $150,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winners.

If there are multiple Rainbow 6 winning tickets,  Gulfstream will take out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet. Then, it will divide 56 percent of the bet among tickets with six winners and add 24 percent to the carryover.

The dirt is listed as Fast and the turf is listed as Good.

Belmont Stakes Draws Eight-Horse Field, Headed By Essential Quality and Rombauer

 HRFLA Staff Report

Eight horses were entered on Tuesday for the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) which will be run on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont. N.Y.

As expected, the field will include last year's U.S. two-year-old champion Essential Quality and the winner of this year's Preakness Stakes (Grade 1) Rombauer.

Essential Quality drew post two and Belmont Park installed him as the 2-1 morning line favorite. Rombauer drew post three, and is second in the morning line at 3-1.

Hot Rod Charlie is in post four at 7-2 in the morning line. In the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) on May 1, he finished third by a head over Essential Quality who came in fourth.

The Belmont field will not include Rebel's Romance, who as of Monday had been listed as a likely entrant in the 1 1/2 mile dirt stakes.

Rebel's Romance is owned and was bred by Dubai-based Godolphin, which on Tuesday said that horse will not run in the Belmont due to a hind leg infection.

The Belmont would have been the first U.S. race for Rebel's Romance.  On March 27, he won the UAE Derby (Grade 2) for 3-year-olds at the Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirate of Dubai.

Godolphin also bred and owns Essential Quality, whose six career starts have been in the United States.  The grey/roan son of Tapit won all of those races except the 1 1/4  mile Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

Here is the field for the Belmont Stakes--by post positions with trainers, owners and morning line odds.

1 Bourbonic, T. Pletcher. K. Carmouche, 15-1

2 Essential Quality. B. Cox. L. Saez, 2-1
3 Rombauer, M. McCarthy, J. Velazquez, 3-1
4 Hot Rod Charlie, D. O'Neill. F. Prat      7-2
5 France Go de Ina, R. Santana, H. Mori  30-1
6 Known Agenda, T. Pletcher, I. Ortiz, 6-1
7 Rock Your World, J. Sadler, J. Rosario  9-2
8 Overtook, T. Pletcher, M. Franco, 20-1

Scheduled post time for the Belmont Stakes is 6:49 p.m. Eastern, and will be telecast live on NBC's over-the-air stations. It will be the 11th race on  a 13-race card that will have seven other graded stakes races.

The relatively small Belmont Stakes field has five horses for which handicappers can make solid win cases. They are Rombauer, Essential Quality, Hot Rod Charlie, Known Agenda and Rock Your World.

In their races prior to the Kentucky Derby on May 1, Known Agenda won the 1 1/8 mile Florida Derby (Grade 1) at Gulfstream Park and Rock Your World won the 1 1/8 mile Santa Anita Derby (Grade 1) at Santa Anita Park.

Known Agenda finished ninth and Rock Your World finished 17th, both after troubled trips, in the Kentucky Derby.

Bourbonic, France Go de Ina and Overtook will be longshots--maybe at odds higher than in the morning line.

This will be the first year since 2010 without a horse that has run in all three Triple Crown races.

Hot Rod Charlie, Essential Quality, Known Agenda, Bourbonic and Rock Your World ran in the Kentucky Derby. Rombauer and France Go de Ina ran in the 1 3/16 mile Preakness at Pimlico on May 15.

The Belmont will be the first Triple Crown race for Overtook, who comes in off a third place finish in a five-horse field in the 1 1/8 mile Peter Pan (Grade 2) at Belmont on May 8.

There will not be a Triple Crown winner this year.
Medina Spirit, trained by Bob Baffert, led at every point of call and won the Kentucky Derby by one-half length over Mandaloun.

In a post Kentucky Derby blood test, Medina Spirit tested positive for the steroid betamethasone which is not permitted in a horse's bloodstream on a race day in Kentucky.

Following that failed drug test, the New York Racing Association barred Baffert from entering horses in races at Belmont and its other tracks.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is conducting a second test on Medina Spirit's post-Derby blood sample.

Churchill Downs has said it if that test finds illegal medication, it will disqualify Medina Spirit and award Mandaloun the Kentucky Derby victory and winner's share of the purse.

Mandaloun did  not run in the Preakness and will not race in the Belmont.

Medina Spirit finished third in the Preakness, following a series of special pre-race blood tests.

Medina Spirit led Midnight Bourbon by one-half length until the beginning of the stretch in the Preakness.

Rombauer surged past both of those horses in the final sixteenth. He won by 3 1/2 lengths over Midnight Bourbon, with Medina Spirit another two lengths back in third place.

Flavien Prat rode Rombauer in the Preakness. In the Belmont, he will be on board Hot Rod Charlie--the horse he rode in the Kentucky Derby.  Prat is honoring a commitment to Doug O'Neill, the trainer of Hot Rod Charlie.

John Velazquez picks up the mount on Rombauer for trainer Michael McCarthy. He rode Medina Spirit in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

The other three top contenders have their same jockeys as in the Kentucky Derby: Luis Saez on Essential Quality for Brad Cox, Irad Ortiz Jr. on Known Agenda for Todd Pletcher and Joel Rosario on Rock Your World for John Sadler.

The Belmont Stakes has this likely pace scenario: Rock Your World taking the lead, with Hot Rod Charlie close behind; Exclusive Quality and France Go de Ina in stalking position; Rombauer and Known Agenda near the rear and likely to make strong late runs; with Overtook and Bourbonic also trailing in the early going.

Nine Horses Expected for Belmont Stakes

The post position draw will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. for Saturday's  Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Belmont Park officials expect that nine horses will be entered for the 1 1/2 mile dirt stakes, which is the final race in the Triple Crown for 3-year-olds.

The list of likely entrants is headed by Rombauer, the winner of the Preakness Stakes (Grade 1) on May 15, and by Hot Rod Charlie and Essential Quality, the third and fourth place finishers respectively in the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) on May 1.

Trainer Todd Pletcher plans to enter  three horses. They are Known Agenda, Overtook and Bourbonic,

The other likely entrants are  Rock Your World, France Go De Ina  and Rebel's Romance.

The Belmont Stakes is scheduled as the 12th race on Saturday's 14-race card. Scheduled post time is 6:49 p.m., and will be televised live on NBC's over-the-air channels. Belmont Park will have seven other graded stakes races on Saturday.

Medina Spirit, the first place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, is not entered in the Belmont Stakes.

In a post Kentucky Derby blood  test, that Bob Baffert trainee tested positive for the steroid betamethasone which is not permitted in a horse's bloodstream on a race day in Kentucky.

Following that failed drug test, the New York Racing Association barred Baffert from entering horses in races at Belmont and its other tracks.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is conducting a second test on Medina Spirit's post-Derby blood sample.

Churchill Downs has said it if that test finds illegal medication, it will disqualify Medina Spirit and award the Kentucky Derby victory and winner's share of the purse to  Mandaloun-the horse that crossed the finish line second in that race.

Medina Spirit finished third in the Preakness at Pimlico in Baltimore on May 15--following a series of special pre-race blood tests.

Mandaloun did  not run in the Preakness and will not race in the Belmont.

Of the likely Belmont starters, only Known Agenda has raced at Gulfstream Park or at Tampa Bay Downs.

Known Agenda, who has a come-from-behind style, won the Florida  Derby (Grade 1) at Gulfstream on March 27.

He finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby, following  a troubled trip from the unfavorable rail post position. He did not race in the Preakness.

The Kentucky Derby had six horses that had raced in Florida. Of those, the best finish in the Kentucky Derby was eighth by Helium who won the Tampa Bay Derby (Grade 2) on March 6.

Unbridled Honor was the only horse that raced in Florida and later raced in this year's Preakness--where he finished sixth.

Research by HorseRacingFLA indicates that barring a strong Belmont Stakes showing, 2021 will be the worst year of this century for "Florida horses" in the Triple Crown races.
