Preakness: One Hour to Post

The twelfth race is coming up at Pimlico in Baltimore, leading up  to the $1.5 million Preakness (Grade 1) with scheduled post of 6:48 p.m. Eastern.

The track is listed as Fast, skies are clear--and racing industry officials are hoping for a safe and exciting race that does not have any controversy.

The Preakness comes two  weeks after the Kentucky Derby - where Maximum Security crossed the finish line first but was disqualified and placed 17th after Churchill Downs stewards determined that he interfered with three horses in an incident on the final turn.

Country House, who crossed the finish line  second, was declared the winner of the Kentucky Derby.

Maximum Security and Country House are not running in the Preakness.  Code of Honor and Tacitus, third and fourth in the Kentucky Derby, also are not in the 13-horse Preakness field.

The likely Preakness favorite is Improbable, who  finished fifth as the favorite in the Kentucky Derby.

In our view, these horses also should be considered as win candidates and used in exactas, trifectas and superfectas: War of Will, Bourbon War, Owendale, Alwaysmining,
Signalman, Anothertwistoffate and Win Win Win.

Gulfstream Park plans an 12 race card Saturday, with a first post of 12:30 PM, and a last post time of 6:30 PM. That will give race enthusiasts a brief gap to grab a spot of food and settle in to watch the Preakness Stakes at a 6:48 PM post time on the simulcast TV's.

Friday's races were back on the turf, as 78 starters ran for $351,000 in purses, with 4 favorites entering the winners circle. Eight favorites were 'in the money' of the 12 races. The Rainbow 6 will start with race 7 at approx. 3:47 PM.

Gulfstream's Friday Racing; Carryovers

Gulfstream Park plans an 11-race card Friday, with a first post of 1:15 PM, and a last post time of 6:36 PM.

A 15% chance of rain is expected during racing hours.

87 starters are listed on the card as of Friday morning, including one 2-year-old in race 2 on the dirt with 8 starters. The Rainbow 6 start is race 6 at approx. 3:58 PM, with 52 entries listed.

In yesterday’s racing, 66 starters left the gates, amid a damp turf course, where all races were on the dirt. Five favorites won on the day, with the long-shot Piano Forte winning over the favorite Forever Marta by 1/2 length in race 10 at 14:1.

The 18 scratches on the scheduled turf races did not seem to affect much, as the favorite finished no worse than second in all those races. Payouts were muted by the lack of long-shot wins.

Here are the late race payouts.

Late Pick 4 paid: $93.30 Late Pick 5 paid: $181.70 Rainbow 6 paid: $645.66 to about 140 winners.

Field of 13 Expected for Preakness, Without Country House or Maximum Security

Post positions will be drawn late Wednesday afternoon for Saturday's Preakness Stakes (Grade 1) at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Pimlico officials expect there will be thirteen entrants for the 1 3/16 mile race, after a surprise 13th horse was entered Wednesday morning at Pimlico when trainer Dale Romans announced he will run Everfast.

Everfast, owned by Calumet Farm, surely will be one of the longest shots in the Preakness field.

Scheduled post time is 6:48 p.m. Saturday.

Of that 'bakers dozen', Improbable and War of Will are the most prominent and are among likely favorites.

Other likely Preakness entrants are Alwaysmining, Win Win Win, Bourbon War, Owendale, Anothertwistoffate, Signalman, and Bodexpress, Warrior's Charge, Laughing Fox and Market King.

The Preakness field will not include Country House or Maximum Security.

Thus, there will be  no immediate rematch of this year's Kentucky Derby (Grade 1), where Country House was declared the winner following the controversial disqualification of Maximum Security--who crossed the finish line first by 1 1/4 lengths over runner-up Country House.

Country House is not running in the Preakness because of a cough, according to his trainer Bill Mott.

Maximum Security is not running in the Preakness because the DQ in the May 4  Kentucky Derby has cost him a chance for the Triple Crown, said Gary West who with his wife Mary is co-owner of that colt.

The Triple Crown will conclude June 8 with the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

On May 6, Maximuim Security co-owner Gary West said Maximuim Security will not run in the Preakness because the horse does not have a chance for the Triple Crown. West and his co-owner wife Mary made that decision after the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission declined to hear their appeal of Churchill Downs' stewards disqualification. The Commission said such decisions by the stewards are not subject to appeal.

On Saturday May 4, Country House became the first horse in the 145-year history of the Kentucky Derby to win it through disqualification of another horse because of an infraction in the race.

Maximum Security  crossed the finish line first, 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Country House. Code of Honor finished third in the 19-horse field in the 1 1/4 mile race for  3-year-olds at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

But after the jockeys of Long Range Toddy and Country House lodged objections, three Churchill Downs stewards unanimously disqualified Maximum Security for an incident in the final turn.

Country House was declared the winner, while Code of Honor was moved into second place.

Maximum Security was placed 17th, one spot below Long Range Toddy. That horse was one of the three that stewards determined were interfered with by Maximum Security, possibly costing them chances for higher finishes.

Improbable crossed the finish line fifth and was moved up  to fourth place in the Kentucky Derby.  He was not involved in the incident that led to Maximum Security's disqualification.

War of Will the horse most directly impacted by Maximum Security.  War of Will was in third place and gaining momentum when Maximum Security veered out one lane and into War of Will's  path - forcing jockey Tyler Gaffalione to pull back on War of Will.

On Monday May 13, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission suspended jockey Luis Saez for 15 days citing failure to control Maxmum Security amd thus putting other horses and their jockeys at risk. The suspension is reciprocal in other states but does not  include stakes races.

Rainbow 6 paid: $6,817 to 18 winners.

The Rainbow 6 pool was $219,150. The Rainbow 6 could hit the $1 million carryover if the pool size is over $330,000, a real possibility given the recent trends and no single winner to take the entire jackpot.

Friday's Racing at Gulfstream; Carryovers

Gulfstream Park plans an 9-race card Friday, with a first post of 12:45 PM. No stakes nor 2-year-olds race. 76 starters are listed, the same number that left the gates Thursday. See the carryovers and payouts listed below.

On Thursday's 10 race card, a couple of longer odds wins by Raven in race 8 and War Star in race 10 made for nice payouts. R Sea Smoke the M/L favorite at 6:5 in race 8, placed 4th in the field of 6. Raven won by 1/2 length. We warned that this race would be a tough handicap. Raven went off at 9.8:1. The $1 Exacta paid a generous $46.70.

Fifty-three starters competed in the Rainbow 6 races (#5-10), where the high-odds winner was War Star in the last race at 23:1. Here are the late race payouts that stood out.

Late Pick 4 paid: $1,840

Late Pick 5 paid: $3,623
Rainbow 6 paid: $9,501 to 12 winners. The Rainbow 6 pool was $212,192.

Carryovers:

Again, the  Rainbow 6 carryover grows to $869,065 for Friday, as the elusive single winner to this wager has yet to occur this meet, now entering it's 22nd race day.  The $1 Super Hi-5 wager was not hit Thursday late, so that carryover will be $2,497 in race 1 Friday if 7 starters leave the gate (the minimum for that bet).

The Rainbow 6 will kicks off in race #4 at about a 2:13 PM Post Time.

Total track handle from all sources was $5.51 million Thursday.

Gulfstream's Thurday Racing; $817,000 Rainbow Carryover

Gulfstream Park plans an 10-race card Thursday as it opens it's 4 day race week. No stakes races are planned, but a 2 year-old jaunt is race 8 - a maiden claimer for fillies and mares -on the dirt at 4-1/2 furlongs. R Sea Smoke is the M/L favorite at 6:5 in the field of 6. The Rainbow 6 encompases races 5-10, so this one will be a tough handicap in that sequence.

With all the hoopla, and then some, focused the past few days on the controversial Kentucky Derby and the sport of horse racing, Gulfstream keeps South Florida enthusiasts busy with year-round racing.

In the last day of racing Sunday, 69 starters left the gates, and clear skies let all the turf races take place unabated. No favorites won Sunday, resulting in some nice payouts. The one standout was a 23:1 winner Salsa Rita in race 4.

Forty-five starters competed in the Rainbow 6 races, where the high-odds winner was Red Crescent at 12:1. Here are the late race payouts that stood out.

Early Pick 5: $12,153

Late Pick 4 paid: $2,272.75
Late Pick 5 paid: $76,417.30
Rainbow 6 paid: $23,659.04  to 5 winners. The Rainbow 6 pool was $211,275.

The Late Pick 5 win was a head-scratcher - No favorite finished worse than 4th in those 5 races: 2nd, 2nd, 4th, third, third - the $76,417 payout was most likely to 2-3 bettors given the pool size.

Carryovers:

The sole carryover will be the Rainbow 6 carryover at $817,190, as the elusive single winner to this wager has yet to occur this meet, now entering it's 21st race day.

The Rainbow 6 will kicks off in race #5 at about a 3:15 PM Post Time.

Total track handle from all sources was $6.34 million Friday.

Enjoy your race day!
