Bauer's Bets: Fast & Firm At Tampa, Saturday's Play Of The Day

RIBBONS AND ROSES (3) appears to have an edge over her rivals in Race 9, an $8,000 claimer for non-winners of two lifetime. A lightly raced sophomore filly (3 starts), this lass beat $16,000 Maiden claiming company by more than 8 lengths in her last outing. Today her claiming tag is cut 1/2 to $8,000 and she has a double speed figure advantage over this field, another indication of her sharp current form. THE BET: $20 to win on RIBBONS AND ROSES (3) and a $2 exacta box with PRESAGE (8) and MARIE JOELLE (10) 3,8,10  Total Bet $32  GOOD LUCK

Florida Derby Day Coverage is Underway

It is early morning on Saturday March 31—Florida Derby day at Gulfstream Park.

In addition to its annual marquee race for 3-year-olds, Gulfstream has a Rainbow 6 carryover of more than $4.7 million that must be paid out in full.

That combination is leading to expectations that total handle on Gulfstream’s 14 races could be almost $50 million. That would be a record for Gulfstream
except for the three days in 1989, 1993 and 1999 when it held the Breeders’ Cup.

First post is 11:30 a.m. for Saturday’s race card.
The $1 million Florida Derby (Grade 1) is the 14th race, with scheduled post of 6:36 p.m.) It is 11/8 miles on dirt and is a major prep for the 1 ¼  mile Kentucky Derby  (Grade 1) that will be run on  May 5 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The Rainbow 6 is on races nine to 14, with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:34 p.m.

Starting later this morning, we will have ongoing on-site coverage of today’s Gulfstream racing on this blog.

Bauer's Bets: Today's Results, The short price beats a long face!

The good news is that both of the play of the day bets got home. Not so good was the chalky prices we collected. Our $20 win bet on ON PATROL (1) only paid back $38. The $2 exacta box paid a paltry $6.80. We collected $44.80 for the $32 bet, a profit of $12.80. The deficit is now $395.20

Bauer's Bets: Fast & Firm At Tampa, Friday's Play Of The Day

Today's play is in Race 2, ON PATROL (1) appears to be well prepped for his turf debut for Hall Of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. This son of Street Sense has been rested since his only race, a 7 furlong attempt at Aqueduct last November 11th. He has logged a dozen works at Payson Park since January, seven on the lawn, including a huge move on March 3rd, 4 furlongs in 47 flat, breezing. Also, he drops in for a claiming tag for the first time and leading rider Antonio Gallardo has the mount. Alot to like here. THE BET: $20 to win on ON PATROL (1) and a $2 exacta box with BIG CLUE (3) and AND ONE (6). 1,3,6. Total Bet $32. GOOD LUCK

Our choice VISION OF BLUE (4) got the job done at a little better than 2-1, paying $6.40 for the win in Race 3. The $2 exacta box went down, but we collected $32 on the win for a $10 profit. The deficit is now $408. Check in on Friday for another play of the day.

Bauer's Bets: Fast & Firm At Tampa, Wednesday's Play Of The Day

Here's a runner in Race 3 that appears to have an edge over his rivals. VISION OF BLUE (4) had been facing Optional Claiming horses and today drops into the non-winners of two races lifetime condition for top tier trainer Kathleen O'Connell. She is in a battle with last year's training champ, Gerald Bennett and is aiming to win with this one. His last pair of starts vs. better were dull, we should get a decent price, near the 7-2 morning line. Pablo Morales, who rode VISION OF BLUE (4) to his maiden win over the local sod last season, is back on. THE BET: $10 to win on VISION OF BLUE (4) and a $2 exacta box with BILLY BIG (9) and INDY FOREST (10). 4,9,10
Total Bet $22. GOOD LUCK

As we expected, Gulfstream today  announced that  next  Saturday March 31 will be the day when it will have  have a madatory  payout on the Rainbow 6.

We will have more on the Rainbow 6  later today.

The 12th race on today's 13-race card is the $100,00 Hutcheson Stakes (Grade 3) at six furlongs on dirt  for 3-year-olds.

In the 6-horse field, we like Soutache (6), making his firstg start since winning the 1 1/16 mile In Reality at Gulfstream last Sept. 30.

He will be ridden byn Tyler Gaffalione, for trainer Ralph Nicks, and will be able tonuse his stslking style in  race thatg should have plenty of speed,
Among the speedsters, we like the Todd Pletcher-traied Impact Player to  hang on for second/.

Bauer's Bets: Today's Results

Once again we got our top choice to the winner's circle, but our exacta box didn't get there. SWEETLYMAID (7) was a prompt favorite, winning by daylight at 3-5. We collected $17 for the $10 win, losing $5 of the original $22 bet. The deficit is now $418. Tomorrow we will have coverage of the six $100,000 Florida-bred Stakes events.

Bauer's Bets: Fast & Firm At Tampa, Saturday's Play Of The Day

Today's play come in Race 4, a mile on the grass for $25,000 claiming fillies. SWEETLY MAID (7) looks to be the most likely winner. This lass ran a good second in her first try on the lawn. She earned the top figure that day and should like the turn-back from a mile and one-sixteenth. Top jock Antonio Gallardo stays aboard. Also, she takes a drop from $32,000 company as do FABULISTA (4) and STEPHENIE D'ORO (6)
THE BET: Use these three in a $2 exacta box 4,6,7. Bet $10 to win on SWEETLY MAID (7).
Total Bet $22    GOOD LUCK

Bauer's Bets: Today's Results

The good news is that our choice in Race 5, THE GREAT SCATSBY (4) got the job done. The bad news is that he was bet down to 40 cents on the dollar and our exacta box went down. The $22 bet returned only $14, resulting in a loss of $8. The deficit is now $413. Racing continues tomorrow.

NOTE: The race of the day broadcast for Friday, March 23 was cancelled due to a satellite problem. The race of the day should be back on Radio St. Pete tomorrow.-Bob Bauer

Bauer's Bets: Fast & Firm At Tampa, Friday's Play Of The Day

THE GREAT SCATSBY (4) should graduate in today's 5th race, a mile and one-sixteenth on the lawn for Maiden Special runners. Top turf conditioner Chad Brown ships this four-year old in to Oldsmar off an impressive debut on the sod at Gulfstream. A repeat of that effort should boss this group he meets here. Dan Centeno has the call.   THE BET- $10 to win on THE GREAT SCATSBY (4) and a $2 exacta box with HIGH BEAM (5) and OVERZEALOUS (7).   4,5,7  Total Bet $22    GOOD LUCK

GP Rainbow 6 Carryover Nears $3.9 Million

The Gulfstream Park Rainbow 6 carryover has extended to 37 days and will be $3,894,408 on Thursday.

First post is 12:35 p.m. for a 10-race card.  The Rainbow 6 will be on races five to ten, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:35 p.m.

That will follow a Wednesday when there were 55 tickets with the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races. Each of those tickets received $4,291.62 on the 20-cent only bet

The carryover keeps growing because Wednesday was the 37th straight race day without the jackpot payoff requirement of just one ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow 6  races.

The jackpot consists of 80 of the day’s Rainbow 6 bet (20 percent takeout) and the entire built-up carryover.

Gulfstream has not announced a date for when it will have a mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 carryover—when all tickets with six winners  will divide  the payout.

However, there are reports that Gulfstream will have the mandatory payout on Saturday March 31, which is Florida Derby Day.

The jackpot consists of 80 of the day’s Rainbow 6 bet (20 percent takeout) and the entire built-up carryover.

On Wednesday, the carryover coming in was $3,792,365.  Bettors added $425,375 to the pool.

Per its rules on days with multiple  winning tickets, Gulfstream took out 20 percent of the day's new bets.  It then divided 56 percent among the tickets with six winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

The program numbers of the six winning horses were 3-4-5-7-1-9.  All of the winners were at 7-1 or lower.

TheRainbow 6 is a 20-cent per combination-only bet.  A ticket can have multiple horses in each race. For example, a ticket with two horses in each race has 64 combinations and costs $12.80.
