Tampa Raises Purses for Second Time in Meet; Gallardo Returns Saturday with Six Mounts

Tampa Bay Downs announced on Friday that it will raise purses on most of its races by approximately ten percent beginning next Wednesday Feb. 3.

That increase will be from an average of $10,000 to $11,000 for all maiden special weight, allowance, claiming and starter races.  That covers all races except stakes.

Peter Berube, Tampa Bay Downs' Vice President-General Manager, said the track is raising purses because  a double-digit gain in simulcast wagering has more than offset a decline in on-track wagering,

The purse increase is Tampa Bay's second  in its  2020-2021 race meeting. The track had raised purses by approximately 10 percent on Dec. 16.

Tampa Bay Downs said it is averaging $4.1-million in total daily handle on its product, a 15-percent increase from the same period last season. The track did not specify that period.  We assume it was Wednesday Jan. 27, the 35th day of its 90-day meet.

On-track wagering has fallen 25 percent, due to what Tampa Bay officials said is mostly attributable to the effect of COVID-19 on attendance. It did not release numbers on attendance.

Tampa Bay has been open to spectators since it began its 2020-2021 meet on Nov. 25.  It is one of the first U.S. tracks that reopened for spectators--following the "no-spectators" racing that had been prevalent in the United States since last April.

In 2019-2020 Tampa Bay was open for spectators from the start of its meet through mid March.

“Our Thoroughbred signal is among the most popular in the country each winter and continues to gain new players, thanks to the size of our fields (an average of 8.4 horses a race) and our outstanding turf program,” Berube said. “We are pleased to use the increased revenue to support the people who make our racing competitive and challenging for serious handicappers and $2 bettors alike.”

Gallardo Returns

Tampa Bay Downs will have ten races on Saturday with first post at 12:32 p.m.

Antonio Gallardo will resume riding after sitting out two days for what track stewards determined was a rules infraction  in a recent race.

Gallardo has 42 wins and is second in the standings behind Samy Camacho who has 46. Daniel Centeno is third with 26 victories.

Saturday is the 37th day of Tampa Bay's 90 day 2020-2021 meet.

Camacho, who led Tampa Bay in wins in 2018-2019, has eight mounts on Saturday.

Gallardo, who won the 2019-2020  riding title, is listed on seven Saturday mounts.

He is coming into Saturday with  1,997 career North American wins.

Centeno, who has won five Tampa Bay riding titles, has five Saturday mounts.

With Gallardo Serving Two-Day Suspension, Camacho Has Chance to Expand Lead in Wins

Antonio Gallardo is not riding on Wednesday or on Friday because he is serving a suspension for what Tampa Bay Downs stewards determined was an infraction in a recent race.

That will give Samy Camacho a chance to expand his lead in victories in the Tampa Bay jockey standings.

Camacho has ridden 43 winners and Gallardo has ridden 42. Daniel Centeno is in third place with 24 wins.

Camacho has eight mounts on Wednesday's nine-race card, which has first post of 12:42 p.m.

Tampa Bay does not have racing on Thursdays.  Camacho is listed on six mounts on Friday.

Wednesday is the 35th day of Tampa Bay's 90-day meet.

Entries will be drawn on Wednesday afternoon for Saturday's races, when Gallardo is scheduled to resume riding. He has ridden 1,997 winners in North America.

Gallardo finished first in  wins at Tampa Bay's 2019-2020 meet. Camacho finished first in wins at the Tampa Bay  2018-2019 meet.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & FIRM at TAMPA

THE BET    Gonna send it in, $100 to win on FORWARD MOTION (5).    Total Bet $100.     GOOD LUCK!!

Gulfstream: New Rainbow 6 Pool on Wednesday; Super Hi-5 Carryover on First Race

Gulfstream Park will have a new Rainbow 6 pool when it resumes racing on Wednesday.

First post will be at 12:35 p.m. for a ten-race card. The Rainbow 6, a 20 cents per combination-only bet, will be on races five to ten with  the sequence scheduled to start at 2:38 p.m.

On Sunday, Gulfstream had a mandatory payout of its Rainbow 6 jackpot. For Wednesday, Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the jackpot pool will be at least $100,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winning horses.

The first race will have a carryover of $6,358 on the Super Hi-5.

The $1 minimum bet requires picking the first five finishers in correct order, with no consolation payoffs  such as four out of five spots. There were no winning Super Hi-5 tickets in Sunday's 11th and final race.

Wednesday's first race is a $20,000 maiden claiming race with five furlongs on turf for 3-year-olds. There are twelve entrants--the maximum field size.

That is the kind of race that often will have long shots in the first five, and thus continue the carryover.

So we also suggest some day-ahead handicapping on the second race.  It is a $20,000 maiden claiming race at six furlongs on dirt for 3-year-old fillies.

This link to the Equibase Web site has the Gulfstream entries for Wednesday.  It has click-ons for handicapping material. Some is free. Some, including Past Performances, is at cost.

On Sunday, its most  recent race day, Gulfstream  had a mandatory payout on its Rainbow 6. Each ticket with all six winning horses won $12,558.86 on a 20 cent bet.

There were 150 of those winning tickets, according to HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 10-1-2-1-7-2.

The carryover coming into Sunday was $266,567. Bettors added $2,077,971 to the Rainbow 6 pool.

Gulfstream divided 80 percent of the day's bet (20 percent takeout) and the entire carryover among the tickets with six winners.

On days without a mandatory payout, such as Wednesday, Gulfstream pays out the jackpot only on days when there is just one ticket with all six winners.

When there are multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet and then divides 56 percent among tickets with six winners and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & FIRM at TAMPA

Today's feature Race 4, Post time 2:13 PM, is another chance to handicap on the fly. Our original choice BEAUTY GENIUS (6) is a late scratch and it appears that the pace dynamics have changed in this $20,000 Claimer for sophomore Fillies to be run at a grassy mile. Live coverage starts on RadioStPete online at 2:11.

DONYA'S MAGIC (3) was a gate to wire winner on December 20 for top notch trainer Kathleen O'Connell. She bested a field of $16,000 Maidens at eight and one-half furlongs from the widest (10) post. Today, she turns back to eight furlongs and should benefit from the inside post. Hector Diaz Jr. has the return call.

THE BET   $10 to win on DONNA's MAGIC (3) and a $2 exacta box with PRINCESS NINA (5) and SUCCESSFUL LEGACY (8) 3,5,8. Total Bet $22 GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS  1/23  Lost $40, the bankroll is $812.10.

Gulfstream: Knicks Go Wins Pegasus Stakes; Mandatory Payout on Sunday Rainbow 6

Knicks Go won Saturday's $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (Grade 1)

There is a mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 jackpot--regardless of the number of tickets with all six winners. It begins on the sixth race, with scheduled post of 2:38 p.m.

Here are capsules of those stories and others we are covering today at Gulfstream Park:

Knicks Go Wins Pegasus

Knicks Go (4), the 6-5 favorite, jumped out to an early lead and was never headed as he won the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (Grade 1) on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Jesus' Team (5), at 11-1, rallied down the stretch and finished second--2 3/4 lengths behind Knicks Go in the 1 1/8 mile dirt stakes for 4-year-olds and up.

The 13-1 shot Independence Hall (3) finished third, a neck behind Jesus' Tram in the 12-horse field.

With Joel Rosario riding, the Maryland-bred Knicks Go won in 1:47.89 on the track listed as Fast.

Brad Cox trains Knicks Go, a 5-year-old non-gelded son of Paynter, for the Korea Racing Authority.

Mandatory Payout on Rainbow 6

Gulfstream will have eleven races on Sunday, with first post of 12:05 p.m.

The Rainbow 6, with the mandatory payout, will be on races six to eleven with the sequence scheduled to begin at 2:38 p.m.

The carryover is $266,567 on the 20 cents per combination-only bet.  We expect that about $2 million will be bet on the Rainbow 6.

On-Site Spectators, Handle

On Saturday, Gulfstream allowed spectators on-site for the first time since last March 15.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, Gulfstream capped attendance at 1,500--all in restaurant areas. Attendees were required to wear masks, and Gulfstream had social distancing and sanitization protocols.

Total handle for Sunday's twelve races was $40,786,712. That was 2.6 percent lower than total  handle $41,896,453 for twelve races on last year's Pegasus day (Jan. 25) when attendance was about 15,000. Breakdowns on sources of handle are not readily available.

Over the past year, increases in Advance Deposit Wagering have made up for the absence of live handle at Gulfstream.

HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows that handle on races at Gulfstream's current championship races is keeping pace with last season.

Through last Sunday Jan. 17 Gulfstream had daily average total handle of $9.63 million.  The daily average was $9.76 million for the same period in the 2019-2020 meet.

We look for it to draw as much aa $250,000.

Gulfstream's Rainbow 6 Mandatory Payoff Starts with Carryover of $1 Million

Gulfstream Park will have a carryover of just over $1 million in its Rainbow 6 on Saturday--a day with a heavily-promoted mandatory payout on that bet's jackpot.

Gulfstream will pay out all of that carryover and 80 percent of the day's new bets on the Rainbow 6, no matter the number of tickets with all six Rainbow 6 winners. On most days, it makes that payment only if there is just one ticket with all six winners. On all days, the Rainbow 6 has  a 20 percent takeout.

A review of Gulfstream wagering history indicates that a carryover that large will probably lure bettors around the country (see Note below)to add as much as $5 million to the Rainbow 6.

Saturday's first post will be at12:05 p.m. for an 11-race card.  The Rainbow 6, a 20 cents per combination-only bet, will be on races six through eleven with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:44 p.m.

On most days when there are multiple Rainbow 6 winning tickets, Gulfstream divides 56 percent of the day's bet among tickets with six winners and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

On Friday, when there was no mandatory payout there were 245 tickets with all six Rainbow six winners. Each won $772.70 on the 20 eent bet.

The carryover coming in was $985,824. Betting on the Rainbow 6 was  $338,850.

Program numbers of the six winning horses were 5-4-2-5-1-8.  Three winners were favorites. Other odds of winners were 13-1, 7-2 and 5-1.

The carryover for Saturday will be $1,066,988.

One Ticket Singled in Rainbow 6

The 10th and last race is coming up at Gulfstream.

There are 79 live tickets in he Rainbow 6.

Only one ticket has a single--on Miranda Sofia

If she doesn't win, the carryover on Friday will be just under $1 million.

Thursday Rainbow 6 Coming up at Gulfstream, Mandatory Payout on Saturday

Gulfstream Park has a Rainbow  6 carryover of $918,857 on Thursday, and on Saturday it will have a mandatory payout of the jackpot on that bet--no matter the number of tickets with the winners of all six races.

The 20 cents per-combination-only bet is on races  five through ten on Friday, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:38 p.m.

The jackpot is made up of the entire carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bets (20 percent takeout).

If there are multiple tickets with all six winners on Thursday and on Friday, the carryover will grow to between $1.2 million and $1.3 million for Saturday.

And because the carryover "all must go" Gulfstream history indicates that between $3 million and $5 million will be bet on the Rainbow 6.

If the carryover is "taken down" on Thursday, the carryover on Saturday will probably will be  about $100,000. If it is taken down on Friday there will be no Saturday carryover. In either case the "all must go" back to bettors requirement will probably generate about $1 million in bets.

On non-mandatory  days, Gulfstream pays out the jackpot only if there is just one ticket with all six winners.

On non-mandatory days when there are multiple tickets with all six winners, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent and then divides 56 percent among the winning tickets while adding 24 percent to the carryover.
