Breeders' Cup Racing Friday

There will be five Breeders' Cup races at Santa Anita Park on Friday--all for 2-year-olds and with 61 entrants including Also Eligibles.

But only two of those horses have  raced in Florida.

They are Two  Sixty  in the $2 million Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1) and Graceful Kitten in the $2 million Juvenile Turf (Grade 1).

They are coming into the Breeders' Cup, in Arcadia, Calif., off runaway victories in stakes races on Sept. 28 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
Both will be racing away from Gulfstream's spring-summer meets for the first time, and both will be making their graded stakes debuts.

Thus, in the wagering, they will be dealing with pre-conceived bias from some handicappers.

However, Two Sixty's stakes-record win in the $400,0000 In Reality Stakes was so fast  that she has been  attracting some buzz and could go off in the 10-1 range in a nine-horse field.

Graceful Kitten is unbeaten in three starts, including the Armed Forces Stakes on Sept. 28. But he probably will be among the longest shots in the Juvenile Turf's full 14-horse field.

It is not unusual for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile races to have just several  horses that have raced in Florida.

A main reason is that many top national trainers, such as Todd Pletcher and Bill Mott, race their top 2-year-olds at tracks in New York and in Kentucky duiring the summer and fall.  In December they bring many of those horses to Florida to race during the winter at Gulfstream or at Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar.

In the money finishes, ler alone wins, have been rare. in Breeders'  Cup Juvenile races.

The most notable exception was in 2010 when Awesome Feather won the Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs.

Prior to the Breeders' Cup, Awesome Feather swept the theee-race fillies division of the Florida Sire Stakes, the ruin at  Calder in Miami Gardens. Those races are restricted to Florida-breds who are sons or daughters of Florida-registered  stallions whose owners have nominated the  for the program.

The
Late Pick  5  Opener Won by  3-1 Broadway Pete.

Awesome Feather was owned by Fred and Jane Brei's Jacks or Better Farm in Ocala. She was trained by Stan Gold and ridden by Jeffrey Sanchez.

The five Breeders' Cup races are part of a ten-race card at Santa Anita.  Gulfstream and Tampa Bay Downs will have simulcast wagerig omn tyhe full card.  The five Brereders' Cup races will betelevised live on the NBC Sports cable channel.

Here are details of Friday's Breeders' Cup  races, includomg yhjr three thag do not havwe a Florida horse.

Both links have information on obtaining free handicapping material and on purchasing Equibase past performances.

On Thursday, we  will have  a preview of the Breeders' Cup Classic and a preview of several  races with contenders that have raced at  Gulfstream Park or at Tampa Bay Downs or have other Florida connections.

*Safety, as well as the races, will receive widespread coverage at this year's Breeders' Cup.

Since late last December, 34 horses have died as a result of injuries suffered in races or in training at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita this spring made major changes in the composition of its dirt track as well as renovations of its turf course.

The California Horse Racing Board, which regulates thoroughbred racing in that state, has an ongoing review of SantaAnita and there are expectations that it will order it to make other changes.

It is expected that numerous members of animal rights groups will demonstrate outside Santa Anita on Friday and on Saturday.

Meanwhile, racing industry officials are dreading the prospect of horses collapsing and of jockey spills during the two days.

Santa Anita is owned by The Stronach Group of Aurora, Ontario.

Gulfstream Park is one of six other U.S. tracks owned by Stronach Group. This year, there have not been reports of significant numbers of horse deaths at any of those tracks.

On Sunday, the most recent GP West race day, none of the  last three races had any tickets with  the correct one-through five finishers in the Super Hi-5.  There are no consolation payoffs, such as four of five, in the bet that has a  $1 minimum.

The carryover has grown because GP  West has gone 20 straight race days (the entire meet thus far) without the jackpot/carryover payoff requirement of just one ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow 6  raees.

The jackpot consists of 80 percent of the day's  Rainbow  6 bets plus the entire built-up carryover.
On Sunday there were 83  tickets with  all six Rainbow 6  winners.  Each received $1,106.20 on a  20-cent bet.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 7-7-4-6-8-1.

Per its rules on days with multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream took out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow6 bet.  It then divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners and added 24  percent to the carryover.

The Weather Channel  forecast is for just  a  15 percent chance  of  rain during racing hours.

First post is 1:00 p.m,

The first race has a Super Hi-5 carryover of $17,975.

It is down to seven starters. the minimum for a GP West race to have  the Super Hi-5, following the scratch of Another Softball (4).

The Rainbow 6  has a carryover of $250,535. It is on races three to eight with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.

We will have coverage during the afternoon on this blog.

GP West Has Two Large Thursday Carryovers

Here are details of the Gulfstream Park West meet's Thursday carryovers of $250,535 on the Rainbow 6 and of $17,975 on the first race's Super Hi-5.

First post is 1:00 p.m. for the eight-race card at Calder in Miami Gardens.

* Rainbow 6 -- $250,535; the 20-cent only bet will be on races three to eight with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.

On Wednesday there were only four tickets with the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races.  Each ticket  received $14,682.42 on the 20-cent only bet.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 5-4-6-6-6-1.

Wednesday was the 16th straight day (the entire GP West meet thus far) without the jackpot/carryover payoff requirement of just one ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races.

The jackpot consists of the entire carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bet (20 percent takeout).

On Wednesday, the carryover coming in was $225,365.  Bettors  added $104,942 to the Rainbow 6 pool.

Per its rules on days with multiple  winning tickets, meet sponsor Gulfstream Park took out  20 percent of the day's bet. It  then divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

*Super Hi-5 --$17,975 on the first race; there were no tickets with the first five finishers in correct order in any of Wednesday's last four races.

There are no consolation payoffs. such as four of five places. Thus there is the carryover on the $1 minimum bet, with an 18 percent takeout.

Wednesday's first race is a $10,000 claimer at  five furlongs on turf for fillies and mares 3-YO and up

The Super Hi-5 often draws less than $1,000.

When there is an overnight carryover, it often becomes what we call a "gold rush bet"--with new bettors chasing carryover money that others have lost.

We expect that  as much as $100,000 will be bet on the Super Hi-5 in the day's first race.

We will leave the handicapping to you on this race,

The Late Pick 5 did not have a carryover.   Bettors wagerd $27,451--a modest sum for  that bet at GP West.

Our remaining Rainbow 6 bets may be found in the previous story on this  blog.

The Rainbow 6 is on the third to eighth races, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.

HorseRacingFLA: Adds Handicapping on Rainbow 6

By Jim Freer and Barry Unterbrink

Beginning Wednesday Oct. 23, HorseRacingFLA is adding handicapping to our already extensive coverage of the Rainbow 6 at Gulfstream Park-sponsored race meets.

On race days, we will have a story on our Web site and on our blog with a recommended ticket on the Rainbow 6. In addition, wc will publish recommended bets on the day's  final  race.

We will publish our picks at approximately 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time,  This will allow us to account for  scratches, track conditions and the weather forecast.
Our Rainbow 6 handicapping will be for the duration of the Gulfstream Park West meet, held at Calder. We will continue it with the Gulfstream Park championship meet that begins Nov. 29.

Our suggested Rainbow 6 tickets will usually be less than $60. That will provide guidance for the  "small bettor" or group of bettors that might want to go  three horses or more deep on some races--while not breaking a wagering budget.

Starting this Wednesday, HRFLA will also handicap and publish recommended bets on the day's last race at GP West and later at Gulfstream (also the last race of the Rainbow 6).

For our last race bets, we have an imaginary $1,000 stake for the GP West meet that will end Nov. 24.

We are handicapping the last race because some  bettors like to start their Rainbow 6 handicapping with it, using it as a race where they go three or more horses deep.

Gulfstream usually cards the last race slot with a maiden claiming or other claiming race with ten or more horses--definitely hard to figure out.

And in case you have been knocked out of the Rainbow 6  or Late :Pick 5, the last race offers a chance to catch up and "get out alive."

We are  happy to provide guidance for  our readers.

We will track and publish  the results of our final race bets.

GP West Resumes Wednesday; Carryover is $225,365

The Gulfstream Parl  West meet will resume on Wednesday with eight races  and first post of  1:00  p.m.

The only carryover  is on the Rainbow 6--at $225,365.

That  20-cent only bet will be on races three to eight, with  the sequence  scheduled to start  at 2:00  p.m.
On  Tuesday we will have additional  details on the GP West  racing,  which is held at  Calder  in Miami Gardens under a lease with Gulfstream Park.

GP West has racingWednesdays through Sundays until Nov. 24. First post is 1:00  p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The Gulfstream Park 2019-2020 championship meet  will open Friday Nov.  29  at Gulfstream's track in Hallandale Beach.

GP West Sunday: Eight Races, 1:00 p.m Post; Rainbow 6 Carryover Passes $200,000

The Gulfstream Park West meet has an eight-race card on Sunday, with first post at 1:00 p.m. at race site Calder  in Miami Gardens.

The only carryover is on the Rainbow 6--at $201,942.

That 20 cent-per combination only bet is on races three to eight, with the sequence scheduled to  start at  2:00 p.m.

On Saturday, when winners in the sequence included two longshots. there were no tickets with all six  winners in the Rainbow 6.

There were 23 tickets with five winners, and each  received $2,676.50 on the 20-cent bet.

Program numbers of the six wining horses were  8-12-7-1-11-6.

Saturday was the 14th day of the GP West meet, and the 14th day without the jackpot/carryover payout requirement of just one ticket with all six winners.  Thus, the carryyover keeps growing.

Bettors added $110,500 to the Rainbow 6  pool on Saturday.

Of that, meet sponsor Gulfstream Park took out 20 percent. It then divided 56 percent among yhe tickets with five winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

*Sunday's first five races are claiming or maiden claiming.

The sixth and seventh are allowance/optional  claiming races at 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt.  Both have $45,000 purses and optional claiming prices of $75,000.

Race six.is  for  2-YO filies and race seven is for 2-YO  maes.

The eighth race is a $48,000 maiden special weight  at  five  furlongs  on turf for  2-YO males.

We will have coverage  during the afternoon on this blog.

GP West: Three Carryovers on Thursday Card; Large Pool Expected on Late Pick 5

When the Gulfstream Park West meet resumes on Thursday it will again have three carryovers--including  $127,087 on the Rainbow 6 and an enticing $163,572 on the Late Pick 5.

The  Rainbow 6 is on races three to eight with the  sequence scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.

The Late  Pick 5  is on races four to eight with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.

Based on previous betting patterns with large  carryovers, we expect that $300,000 or more could be bet on the Rainbow 6. That would be about six times higher than the approximately $50,000 on that bet at GP West on weekdays when there is not a carryover.

The GP West meet,  held at Calder in Miami Gardens, also will have a carryover of $1,110 on the first race on the Super Hi-5 wager.

A main reason for the carryovers is that 70-1 shot Irish Expectations won the ninth and final race.

On Sunday and on Monday, the most recent GP West race day, there were no tickets with all six winners in the Rainbow 6 and no tickets with all five winning horses in the late Pick 5.

On both days, there were no tickets with the first five finishers in the Super Hi-5 in the final  race.

Program numbers of Monday's winning horses in the Rainbow 6 were 1-8-4-2-2-10.

Three winners were favorites at 5-2  or lower.  Other winning odds were 8-1 and 14-1.

Wednesday at G.P. West; 1:00 PM Post

Gulfstream Park West (GPW) plans an 8-race card Wednesday, with a first post of 1:00 PM. Last post time is near 4:45 PM.

Two 2 year old races will be in races 3 and 5, which would include the Rainbow 6 (races 3-8), and the the late Pick 4 (races 5-8).

In the last racing day, Sunday, 56 starters ran 9 races under clear-fast conditions. All races were dirt based. Four favorites entered the winners circle.

A couple of 11:1 and 6:1 winners in the late Off-Turf races (Miss Miami and Unnamed Soldier) boosted the payouts a bit over the recent norms. The Rainbow 6 and other wagers paid off the following:

Late Pick 4, $720.85
Late Pick 5, $5,287.85
Late Pick 5 consolation, 4 of 5 paid: $48.65

Rainbow 6, $2,142.22 paid to 8 winning ticketholders.

The total pool on the Rainbow 6 was $30,611 as betting interest will be low here until the carryover reaches - perhaps - $100,000.

Wednesday's carryover is $37,242 on the Rainbow wager. It all kicks off in race 3 at approx. 2:00 PM.

The Super Hi-5 wager has no carryover.
Good Luck!
