Gulfstream Park West Meet to Open Wednesday

By Jim Freer
Welcome to South Florida thoroughbred racing's  annual "eight miles west" shift for October and  November.

G
ulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach ended its summer racing meet on Sunday Sept. 29th. This week, we will have meet-ending stories on the racing and wagering there.

The Gulfstream Park West meet, at Calder in Miami Gardens, will open on Wednesday, October
2nd.

First post will be at 1:00 p.m for an eight-race  card on opening day.

The 40-day meet will host racing Wednesdays through Sundays ending Nov. 24th.

GP West History
This is the sixth straight year for the GP West  meet. Since its start in 2014 has been held at the Calder Race Course track and stables. The contract for the GP West meet extends through 2020.

Gulfstream in Hallandale Beacy is owned by the Stronach Group, while Calder is owned by publicly-traded Churchill Downs Inc. (CDI). CDI signed the lease after they raced head-to-head on weekends for 12 months from mid 2013 to mid 2014 during a dispute over racing dates.
Calder Race Track
Gulfstream's
average daily handle proved to be  about three times larger than Calder's handle.
Calder and CDI accepted the lease deal, to serve  both the Miami & Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood  markets.

One issue was the Florida law that requires a pari-mutuel to have at least 40 performances per year to keep their casino license. The Division of  Pari-Mutuel Wagering determine that the lease enabled Calder to meet that casino requirement.

This year Calder opened a jai-alai fronton.

But Calder, under terms of its Gulfstaesm lease, is still putting 10-percent of net slot machine revenues into race purses at Gulfstream-sponsored meets.

CDI has indicated that it does not plan to extend the Gulfstream lease beyond 2020 and that it does not desire thoroughbred racing at Calder after 2020.

The Stronach Group owns Palm Meadows training center in Boynton Beach, Fla. Palm Meadows is approximately 50 miles North of Gulfstream.

Gulfstream Park Meet Ends Sunday 1:15 PM Post Time

Gulfstream Park will run it’s last races of the Summer Meet Sunday. It will be race day 54 on the meet that started July 1st.

This Wednesday, October 2, live racing resumes at Gulfstream Park West, on the Calder Race Course and Casino property located in Miami Gardens, about 8 miles West of Gulfstream Park. Sunday’s race card has 11 races listed, no stakes, and a 1:15 PM first post.

As reported yesterday, the Rainbow 6 wager was cashed Friday as a Jackpot win for one lucky bettor. That reset the carryover to zero on Saturday’s races. The third leg of the Florida Sires Stakes was run Saturday, with $75,000, $150,000, and $400,000 purses in the 7 stakes races.

Three favorites won their stakes races, and a pair of 17:1 and 20:1 winners in two stakes led to a nice Pick 5 payoff.

Marshall Eddies (20:1) won the Mr. Steele stakes  by a half-length over Grand Journey in the 10th, and Great Sister Diane (17.6:1) won by 1-1/4 lengths in the 12th race – Monroes Stakes; Hogan’s Holiday the favorite finished a distant 9th.

Here are the late race wagering payoff’s:

Late Pick 4 paid: $672.40
Late Pick 5 paid: $25,670.05
Late Pick 5 (4 of 5); paid $112.85

Rainbow 6: $901.86 paid to 67 correct tickets. *Note: the Rainbow 6 was paid on a 5 of 6 basis, since no bettor had the correct wager on all six races. Race 6 kicks off the Rainbow 6 Sunday with a 4:00 p.m. post time. The carryover is $26,090.

Sunday’s racing is under a mandatory payout on the Late Pick 4, Pick 5, Rainbow 6 and Super Hi-5 wagers. The pools minus track takeout, plus any carryover coming into Sunday will be paid to the correct tickets winning the wager.

Stay tuned to Horse Racing FLA this next week as we transition over the Gulfstream West race track reporting.

Three Horses Singled in Rainbow 6 Finale

The ninth and final  race is coming up at Gulfstream.

There  are 25 live  tickets in the Rainbow  6.  Three tickets have a horse that is a single.

Those  horses are  Resident Liberal (5), Summer Beach (6) and Drillomatic (8).
A  win by any of those horses would take down about  $2.2 million--and spoil what Gulfstream has been hoping will be a huge Rainbow 6 betting day for  Sunday's mandatory payout.

Friday Rainbow 6 Opener Won By 5-1 Shot

Angelic Knugget (5), at 5-1, won Friday's s fourth  Race  at Gulfstream Park, to start the Rainbow 6.

Bettors poured $307,801 into the pool for  the Rainbow 6, which is a 20-cent per combination only bet.  The  carryover  coming in was $1,965,547.

It is expected that Saturday will be another day of heavy wagering on the Rainbow 6, which will  include five stakes races.

First post is 12:05  p.m. for Saturday's 14-race  card.

On Sunday, Gulfstream will have a mandatory payout of the entire  Rainbow 6 carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow  6 bets--no matter the number of tickets with  all  six winning horses.

Gulfstream usually makes that jackpot  payoff only on days when there is just one  ticket with all six  winners.

On non-mandatory days when there  are multiple  wining tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20  percent of the day's bet.  It then  divides 56 percent of that bet among tickets with six winners and adds 24 percent of the day's  Rainbow  6 bet  to the carryover.

Gulfstream Thursday, 1:15 Post, Carryovers

Gulfstream Park plans a 9-race card Thursday, with a first post of 1:15 PM at the Hallandale, Florida track.

No stakes races are planned, and 51 entries are listed in the last 6 races. Races 7 and 8 are two-year-old runs.

The Rainbow 6 kicks off today in race 4 at approximately 2:45 PM. It's a 1 mile dirt race, claiming for 3 year-olds that have not won a race at a mile or over since Aug. 26th.

Six entries are listed as of Thursday morning on the race card.

Racing continues Friday, Saturday and on Sunday, when the Summer meet will end. Live racing then moves 8 miles West to the Calder Race Course, named Gulfstream West - on Wednesday, October 2nd.

The weather channel forecasts a 0% chance of rain during racing hours.

Here are the payoffs for Wednesday's racing.

Late Pick 4, $80.55
Late Pick 5, $603.75
Late Pick 5 with 4 of 5: $11.50
Rainbow 6, $879.30 to about 135 winners

The Rainbow 6 carryover today will be $1,903,858 and the Super Hi-5 carryover will be $3,532 in the first race that starts 7 horses. That would appear to be race 1 today, with a field of 10 on the race card.

Good Luck.

Gulfstream's Wednesday Racing; 1:15 PM Post

Gulfstream Park, in an addition to its original schedule, has added this Wednesday, Sept. 25, to its live racing schedule.

The Gulfstream Wednesday card lists eight races, none of them stakes, with a first post at 1:15 p.m.

It is the first  of five straight live race days that  will finish Gulfstream's  summer  meet.

On Wednesday, the Rainbow 6 carryover is $1,852.653  That 20-cent only bet is on races three to eight with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m.

The carryover has grown because Gulfstream has gone 45 straight race days without the jackpot  payoff requirement of just one ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow races.

The jackpot consists of the entire Rainbow 6 carryover plus 80% of the day's new best, minus the 20% takeout by the track owner.

Sunday the 29th will be a mandatory payout day for the Rainbow 6, and Pick 5 and Super Hi-5 wagers if applicable.

In last Sunday's racing action, 96 starters competed for $274,000 in purse money. Four favorites crossed the wire, while three 7:1 or higher winners set up 11 Rainbow 6 winners for $19,508 each.

Forty-Nine entries are listed for the last 6 races Wednesday.

Besides the Rainbow 6 jackpot mentioned above, the Super Hi-5 carryover will be $2,482 no doubt in race 1 Wednesday.

Good Luck!

Rainbow 6 starts with pair of 7-1 winners.

A pair of 7-1 shots  won the fifth and sixth races at Gulfstream on Sunday, to start the Rainbow 6  and Late  Pick5.

Those winners were Power Punch (4) in the fifth and Extravagant Rosie (3) in the sixth.\

Bettors put $376,123 into  the Rainbow 6.  That was the most for any day during this summer's meet. The carryover coming in was $1,763,112.

Wagering for Sunday was 142,530 on the Late Pick 5, on which there was no carryover.

Rainbow 6 starts  with pair of 7-1  winners.

Gulfstream: Rainbow 6 Carryover Nears $1.8 Million

Gulfstream Park's ten-race Sunday card is underway with clear skies and with the dirt  track listed as fast and the turf course listed as firm.

There are no stakes  races on the card.

The highlight is the Rainbow 6 with a  carryover that has grown to $1,763,112.

Gulfstream Saturday; 12 Races, Carryovers

Gulfstream Park plans a 12-race card Saturday, with a first post of 12:45 PM. There is one stakes race on the day. The Bear's Den. It is a 6-1/2 furlong run on the turf for 3 or 4 year-olds who have never won two races.

Art G is Back
is the 5:2 morning line odds favorite in the $16,000 claiming race for a $75,000 purse.

Races 2,7 and 8 feature two-year-olds, which are populating the race cards recently more and more.

In Friday's action, three favorites won over the 9 races, with a 33:1 winnner in the last race to befuddle bettors. Seeking the Truth won the 2 year-old run then, while the other two-year-old race favorites finished 11th and 5th in races 3 and 5.

As we said yesterday, pay attention to the two year old races, as they have a history of disappointing bettors. You may want to bet deep on the 7th and 8th races if they are part of your Late Pick 5 and Rainbow 6 wagers. Twenty entries are listed in those two races combined.

Here are the payoffs on the Friday's racing card.

 Late Pick 4, $1,179.75

 Late Pick 5, $9,411.95

Late Pick 5, $57.45 (4 of 5)
 Rainbow 6, $8,098.20

The Rainbow 6 win payoff went to 19 ticket holders. The total pool on the Rainbow 6 was $274,822.

Today's carryover on the popular Rainbow 6 is at $1,674,607. It starts in race 7 at approx. 3:55 PM.

The Super Hi-5 wager carryover will be $1,776 in race 1 if 7 or more starters leave the gate.

Good Luck!

Gulfstream Park, Carryovers - 2:15 PM Post

Gulfstream Park plans a 9-race card Friday, with a first post of 2:15 PM at the Hallandale, Florida track. All races are either maiden claiming, optional claiming, or maiden special weight.

Two 2 year-old races are planned in races 5 and 9, which will include the Late Pick 4,5 and Rainbow 6 wagers. So pay attention to those races, as they have a history of disappointing bettors.

Henrie's World at 3:1 and Smash (7:2) are the M/L favorites in Race 9.

Here are the payoffs on the Thursday racing card, which includes a gargantuan Pick 5.

 Late Pick 4, $17,928
 Late Pick 5, $263,341
Rainbow 6, $2,410.94

The Rainbow 6 win payoff went to about 60 ticket holders. The Pick 5 we surmise was paid to a single ticket holder, as the pool on this wager was $344,320.

The total pool on the Rainbow 6 was $268,048.

Today's carryover on the popular Rainbow 6 is at $1,608,664. It starts in race 4 at approx. 3:50 PM. Race 4 is a dirt race for 3 y/o in a starter optional claimer.

The Rainbow jackpot is paid when a single winner has all 6 finishers on his or her $0.20 wager. The Super Hi-5 wager carryover will be $1,072 in race 1 if 7 or more starters leave the gate.
Good Luck!

Gulfstream Park; Carryovers: 1:15 PM Post Time

Gulfstream Park plans a 10-race card Thursday, with a first post of 1:15 PM at the Hallandale, Florida track.

There are just 9 race days left in this meet, including today – before live racing then moves 8 miles West to the Calder Race Course, named Gulfstream West – for the October and November racing. Gulfstream plans a Wednesday race day, 9/25 which is usually dark.

The last live race day, on Sunday 9/15, saw a large 120 starter field in 12 races, where 4 favorites won. With just one favorite winner in the last 6 races, that led to some unusual and favorable payouts.

To wit: No one had the winning late Pick 5 wager; carryover today $43,846; the Super Hi-5 carryover is a big $12,628 today in race 1, and the Rainbow 6 carryover keeps chugging higher at $1.544 million

It’s a great wagering day to USE the losers money in the carryovers to add to your potential payout. A pair of 10:1 and 25:1 winners Sunday made the payouts bigger than recent trends. A mere 4 lucky tickets cashed the Rainbow 6 at $50,583.28 each.

The weather channel forecasts a 15-35% chance of rain during racing hours.

Here are the payoffs for Sunday’s racing.
Late Pick 4, $13,843

Late Pick 5, $554.85 on 4 of 5
Rainbow 6, $50,583 to 4 winners

The past three racing days has seen the Rainbow 6 pools move into the $300,000 plus area. We think it’s bound to increase most race days as we enter day 42 of this Rainbow 6 carryover, last won on July 7th.

The Rainbow 6 starts in race 5 at approx. 3:16 PM, with 57 entries listed in those races. Take note of race 7, a maiden special weight dirt race for 2 year-olds with a field of 10.

Good Luck.

Gulfstram: Favorite Wins Late Pick 5 Opening Leg

Sturgeon, the 6-5 favorite, won Gulfstream's fifth race, to start Friday's carried-over Late Pick 5.

The carryover  coming in was $32,182.  That  was a big attraction for bettors who added $200,197 to the pool.

We  will be  back  this evening to recap today's races and look at  Saturday's Gulfstream  card.

Rainbow 6 Opener Won by 4-1 Shot

Gump (8), at 4-1, breezed tp a victory in Friday's fourth race  at Gulfstream.

It was the start of the Rainbow 6.  Bettors poured  $325,056 into  that pool--on the high side of the $250,,000 plus that we expected.

The  carryover coming in was $1,294,321.

The Late Pick5, with a carryover of $32,182, begins with the fifth race.

Carryovers Coming Up in Rainbow 6 and Late Pick 5

The fourth race  is coming up at Gulfstream with scheduled post of 3:$9  p.m.

But look for it to be delayed at least three minutes because it is the start of the Rainbow 6 with a carryover that has grown to  $1.294,321.

The Late Pick follows with a carryover of $32,182.

We are looking for as much as  $150,000 to be bet on the Picke 5 and as much as $250,000 on the Rainbow 6--both high for a weekday.

On Thursday there were no  Late Pick 5 tickets with all five  winners and no  Rainbow 6 tickets with all six winners.

A main reason was that Silver Tunes, at 85-1, won the ninth and final  race.

Super Hi-5 Hit at Gulfstream

The Super Hi-5  was hit in the second race at  Gulfstream and  paid $571.70 on the minimum

Program numbers for the winning combination were 1-7-2-6-5.

Gulfstream Underway for Friday: Fast and Firm

The Friday card is underwayh  at  Gulfstream, with  conditions fast  and firm.

The  Super  Hi-5  was not hit  in the first race.   The carryover for the second race is $2,503  If it goes un hit for another race or two, we expect a  "Gold  Rush" run that  could see the carryover rise to  $50,000 or more.

We will be bck shortly, with a preview of the Rainbow  6 and Late  Pick  5--with big carryovers

Gulfstream: Three carryovers for Friday

Gulfstream Park on Friday  has three carryovers, including $1,294,203 on the Rainbow 6.

Sire Stake Results; Hurricane Cancels Sunday Racing

Saturday's racing action and weather were just fine, as 109 starters competed in some nice purses in the Sire Stakes, the second leg of the three race schedule.

Despite no rain during the race day, four races were off the turf, while the Stakes races ran on the scheduled surfaces. Five favorites won their races, but just one Stakes race favorite (Graceful Kitten, 2:1) crossed the wire first in the Proud Man stakes, race 12.

Onyx
won the Sharp Susan Stakes by 3/4 over Fujairah, while Cici Valentina, 12:1 outran Bahamian Girl for the win in the Susan's Girl Stakes. Lenzi's Lady Luck, the 4:5 favorite, leading into the stretch, pooped out and finished 6th.

The Affirmed Stakes winner was Liam's Lucky Charm, at 4:1 by a head over the favorite Chance It (2:5).  In sum, the 13 races competed for $925,700 in purse money, and 57 two-year-olds got to strut their stuff for the fans. The late races paid some nice (but not huge) payouts, mainy due to the fairly low odds of the winners 5:1 or less, except Cici Valentina at 12.5:1.

Late Pick 4:  $1,344.50

Late Pick 5:  $3,350.95
Rainbow 6:  $11,992

Seven horses were scratched in the Sire Stakes races, leaving 38 starters. The winning program numbers on the Rainbow 6 were: 12-7-2-5-1-10. The carryover here will be $1,042,563 when racing resumes.

With no racing scheduled for today or Monday due to the hurricane Dorian threat, we expect racing to resume on the normal Thursday schedule, September 5th. The last hurricane that affected Gulfstream Racing was in September 2017, when hurricane Irma closed racing for 7 race days. The track did have a Wednesday make-up day then, so we'll monitor their schedule and report that to you via our blog: insidefloridahorseracing.blogspot.com
