Saturday's racing action and weather were just fine, as 109 starters competed in some nice purses in the Sire Stakes, the second leg of the three race schedule.
Despite no rain during the race day, four races were off the
turf, while the Stakes races ran on the scheduled surfaces. Five
favorites won their races, but just one Stakes race favorite (Graceful Kitten, 2:1) crossed the wire first in the Proud Man stakes, race 12.
Onyx won the Sharp Susan Stakes by 3/4 over Fujairah, while Cici Valentina, 12:1 outran Bahamian Girl for the win in the Susan's Girl Stakes. Lenzi's Lady Luck, the 4:5 favorite, leading into the stretch, pooped out and finished 6th.
The Affirmed Stakes winner was Liam's Lucky Charm, at 4:1 by a head over the favorite Chance It (2:5).
In sum, the 13 races competed for $925,700 in purse money, and 57
two-year-olds got to strut their stuff for the fans. The late races paid
some nice (but not huge) payouts, mainy due to the fairly low odds of
the winners 5:1 or less, except Cici Valentina at 12.5:1.
Late Pick 4: $1,344.50
Late Pick 5: $3,350.95
Rainbow 6: $11,992
Seven horses were scratched in the Sire Stakes races, leaving 38 starters. The winning program numbers on the Rainbow 6 were: 12-7-2-5-1-10. The carryover here will be $1,042,563 when racing resumes.
With no racing scheduled for today or Monday due to the hurricane Dorian
threat, we expect racing to resume on the normal Thursday schedule,
September 5th. The last hurricane that affected Gulfstream Racing was in
September 2017, when hurricane Irma closed racing for 7
race days. The track did have a Wednesday make-up day then, so we'll
monitor their schedule and report that to you via our blog: insidefloridahorseracing.blogspot.com
