Rainbow 6 Hit for $20,322.40 at GP West.

There was just one winning ticket on the Rainbow 6 at the Gulfstream Park West meet on Sunday, and it paid $20,322.40 on the 20-cent only bet.

GP West began a new Rainbow 6 pool on Sunday. That followed a Saturday when there also was just one ticket with the winning horses in all six Rainbow6 races.

The Saturday payoff was $162,143.62. It consisted of the entire 10-day carryover of $90,222 plus 80 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bets of $89,924 (20 percent takeout).

The GP West meet, held at  Calder, will resume on Wednesday with eight  races and first post at 1:15p.m.

The first race has a Super Hi-5 carryover of $2,765.

There will be a new pool on the Rainbow 6. It will be on races three  to eight, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:19 p.m.

On Sunday, betting on the Rainbow 6 was $25,415
GP West took out the standard 20 percent and paid the rest back on the winning ticket

The winning combination was 2-6-5-6-2-9.

The lack of multiple winning tickets was due largely to a victory by a 13-1 shot and a victory by a 29-1 shot.

Rainbow 6 Hit for $162,143 at GP West

The Rainbow 6 at the Gulfstream Park West meet was hit by just one ticket on Saturday and it paid $162,143.62 on the 20-cent only bet.

GP West will have a new Rainbow 6  pool on Sunday,  on races five through ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:19 p.m.

First post is 1:15 p.m. for the ten-race card at Calder in Miami Gardens. Fla.

As of Saturday night, GP West sponsor Gulfstream Park had not disclosed the identity of the individual  or group that had the wining ticket.

The payoff consisted of the entire 10-day carryover of $90,222 plus 80 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bets of $89,924 (20 percent takeout).

Gulfstream pays out that Rainbow 6 jackpot only on days when there is just one ticket with  all six winners.

On other days it takes out 20 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet, divides 56 percent among tickets with the most winners (usually six) and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

The winning Rainbow 6 combination was 1-5-5-8-8-3.

In Sunday's first race there is a carryover of $16, 964 on the  Super Hi-5. It is a $1 minimum bet that requires picking the first five finishers in correct order with no consolation payoffs such as four of five.

Gunnevera "On the Bubble" for BC Classic; Gulfstream Has Large Group of Pre-Entries

Multiple graded-stakes winner Gunnevera heads a Gulfstream Park contingent of almost 30 horses that on Wednesday were pre-entered in next weekend's Breeders’ Cup races.

Those races will be run on Friday Nov. 2 and Saturday Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Gunnevera, a 4-year-old colt that trains year-round at Calder in Miami  Gardens, is among 19 horses that were entered in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (Grade 1).

That race is 1 1/4 miles on dirt for 3-year-olds and up.  It will be the final race on the Saturday Breeders' Cup card, with scheduled post of 5:44 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

A  maximum of 14 horses will be allowed as entries  in the BC Classic. Gunnevera is 16th on the points qualifying list.

However, there is a strong prospect that Gunnevera will get off the bubble and into the BC Classic field.

City of Light and Bravazo, two horses ahead of him on the eligibility list, also have been pre-entered for the Breeders' Cup  Dirt Mile (Grade 1).  Their owners have listed that race as first preference.

Meanwhile, one or more of the other horses in the top 14 could be withdrawn from consideration for the  BC Classic.

Gunnevera, trained by Antonio Sano, has won more than $3 million and his record includes a win in the 2017 Fountain of Youth (Grade 2)  at Gulfstream (photo on home page)

But he did not win any graded stakes this year, and that may be a reason for his relatively low ranking by the Breeders' Cup panel of experts.  The members of that panel  are racing directors and racing secretaries at tracks in the United States and Canada.

Later this weekend, we will have an article that  reviews the Breeders' Cup "who gets into a race" criteria. We also  will look at Gunnevera's chances if he gets into the BC Classic.

The pre-entries are the final nominations for the BC races.  Fields will be announced and post positions will be drawn between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Monday Oct, 29.

There will be five BC races on Friday Nov. 2 and nine BC races on Saturday Nov.3. The Friday races are all for 2-year-olds, and the Saturday races are all for 3-year-olds and up.

Six horses that won stakes races at Gulfstream this year are pre--entered in BC races.

Those horses and races are:
*Stormy Embrace -- Filly and Mare Sprint, Nov. 3
*Cookie Dough -- Juvenile Fillies, Nov. 2
*Well Defined --  Juvenile, Nov. 2
*Pay Any Price -- Turf Sprint, Nov. 3
*XY Jet  -- Sprint, Nov. 3
*Promises Fulfilled -- Dirt, Nov. 3, and Sprint, Nov. 3.

In a news release, Gulfstream mentioned nineteen other horses that raced during its 2017-2018 championship meet and are pre-entered in Breeders' Cup races.

Those horses and the races for which they are pre-entered are:
*West Coast, Collected, Catholic Boy, Mind Your Biscuits, Seeking the Soul and Toast of New York (Classic)

*Channel Maker, Hi Happy and Sadler’s Joy ($4 million Turf, Nov. 3);

*Giant Expectations and Seeking the Soul (Dirt Mile);

*xEtravagant Kid, Blind Ambition, Bucchero, Rainbow Heir, Richard’s Boy and Vision Perfect (Turf Sprint)

*Fuhriously Kissed and Verve’s Tale (Distaff, Nov. 3)

* Marley’s Freedom (Filly & Mare Sprint).

Following Monday's post position draw, we will have details on many of  the horses listed above and on their prospects in Breeders' Cup races.

Pre-Entries Announced for Breeders' Cup Races

Editor's Note -- This article is the first in HorseracingFLA's previews of the Breeders' Cup races that will be run on Friday Nov. 2 and on Sunday Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Our coverage will be daily through Nov. 4 and will consist of articles written by our staff, articles picked up from other publications and edited news releases from  race tracks and other racing organizations.

A big part of our focus will be on horses that have raced at Gulfstream Park and/or at Tampa Bay Downs and horses with other Florida connections.
--Jim Freer

HorseracingFLA Staff Report
Pre-entries were announced on Wednesday for the 2018 Breeders'  Cup  races that will be run on Friday Nov. 2 and on Saturday Nov.3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

There will be five Breeders' Cup races that Friday and nine Breeders' Cup races that Saturday.

The pre-entries are final nominations for Breeders' Cup (BC) races.

Fields will be set and post positions will be drawn on Monday Oct. 29  from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time at an event In Louisville.

Which Horses Get In
In thirteen of the races, the maximum number of entrants is fourteen.  In the Juvenile Turf Sprint, on the Friday card, the maximum is twelve entries.

Twelve of the races are oversubscribed with pre-entries.

Here are the criteria for determining the fields:
*Seven entry spots are reserved for horses that won Breeders' Cup Challenge races (usually  about four per race) and for horses that had the most points in graded stakes races in 2018.

There were 49 "Win and You're In" Breeders' Cup  Challenge races in the United States or Canada and 33 such races in Europe.  Forty-eight BC pre-entered horses won one or more Challenge races.

*The other seven horses are chosen by a  panel of experts, made up of racing directors and racing secretaries at tracks in the United States and Canada.

Each race can have up to two Also Eligibles.

There are 221 pre-entered horses. Twenty-five were cross-entered, in two races, with owners and trainers listing a first preference race.  Thus, some horses that are not in the top 14 pre-entries will be able to get into a BC race.

Lists of the pre-entries and the schedule for races, including TV coverage, may be found  on the Breeders' Cup Web site breederscup.com

Post time on Saturday Nov. 3 is 5:44 p.m. Eastern for the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (Grade 1)  at 1 1/4 miles on dirt for 3-year-olds and up.

Where to Watch
All of the Breeders' Cup races will be televised live on either the NBCSports cable channel or on NBC's network stations.

All Breeders' Cup races will be shown, with bets taken, on major Advance Deposit Wagering platforms--such as Twinspires, Xpressbet and TVG.

On the two Breeders' Cup days, Gulfstream Park  and Tampa Bay Downs will both have full-card simulcasting of the BC races and other races from Churchill Downs.

That will be a 2 year-old dirt race; a maiden claiming race.
Thursday’s racing saw 8 races ran under clear, firm conditions. Odds-wise, 5 races were won by favorites, lowering the payouts. The high odds winner was 8.5:1 in race 3. Seventy-two starters competed on the 8-race card.
Bettors added $37,182 to the pool in the Rainbow-6, which paid out $1,933 to an estimated 10 ticket holders.
The Late pick 4 and pick 5 paid just $110 and $1,027 respectively.
The sole carryover for Friday is the Rainbow 6 with $80,010.

GP West Resumes Wednesday With 1:15 First Post

Live racing will resume on Wednesday at the Gulfstream Park West meet with eight races and first post of 1:15 p.m.

The GP West meet is at Calder in Miami Gardens, and is run by Gulfstream Park under a lease agreement

The only carryover on Wednesday is on the Rainbow 6, at $61,147.  It will be on races three  through eight with the sequence scheduled to  start at 2:19 p.m.

On Sunday, the most recent GP West race day, the big focus was on the Late Pick 5 on which there was a two-day coming-in  carryover of $86,095.

Sunday's wagering on the Late Pick 5 was $378,930--one of the largest ever for that bet at a Gulfstream meet other than its championship meet.

The winning combination was 6-1-9-4-9.  All five winning horses were at 5-1 or lower.

The payoff was $1,241.55 on the minimum 50-cent bet.  The number of winning tickets was not readily available.

Sunday was the seventh straight day without just one Rainbow 6 ticket with all six winners.  Thus the carryover continues.

On Sunday, there were six tickets with all six Rainbow 6 winners.  Each was paid $5,348.54 on the 20-cent only bet.

Sunday's wagering on the Rainbow 6 was $61,600. Of that GP West took out 20 percent, divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

GP West Sunday: Late Pick 5 Carryover is $86,095

The Gulfstream Park West meet  will have a Late Pick 5 carryover of $86,095 on Sunday.

That is far below Powerball territory.  But chances of a payoff are greater on the Late Pick 5, and are based on handicapping rather than luck.

GP West's big day for the Late Pick 5 will  follow two consecutive days, Friday  and Saturday, when there were no tickets with all five winning horses in those races.

First post is 1:15 p.m. for Sunday's ten-race-card, which has no  stakes races.  The GP West meet  is at Calder in Miami Gardens.

On Sunday's first race, there  is a carryover  of $1,513 on the Super Hi-5.

The Late Pick 5 is on races six through ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:59 p.m.

Sunday's carryover on the Rainbow  6 is $46,365 on the GP West races.

The Rainbow 6 is on races five through ten with with the sequence scheduled to start at  3:26 p.m.

On Saturday, four winners of Late Pick 5 races were at 11-1 or higher.  The payoff for tickets with four winners was $1,365.95 on the minimum 50 cent bet.

Saturday' wagering on the Late Pick 5 was $109,290.  Bettors were chasing a carryover of $16,430.

We projected that wagering on the Late Pick 5 would be $100,000 or more.

For Sunday, we expect that Late Pick 5 wagering could be higher than $250,000. That would be very high for that bet at a Gulfstream-sponsored meet other than its championship meet.

The Saturday parade of longshot winners resulted in a payoff of $20,675.95 for the minimum 50-cent bet on the Late Pick 4.

Saturday was the second straight day without any Rainbow 6 tickets that had all six winners.

So, Gulfstream made its non-jackpot payoff to tickets with five winners.  There were five such tickets and each paid $5,834.54 on the 20-cent only bet.

Bettors wagered $52,274 on Saturday's Rainbow 6.  Of that GP West took out 20 percent, divided 56 percent among tickets with five winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

Three Carryovers on GP West Saturday Card, With First Post of 1:15 p.m.

The Gulfstream Park West meet will have three carryovers on  its ten-race Saturday card.

First post is 1:15 p.m. for the GP West races, which are held at Calder in Miami Gardens.

The carryovers:
*Super Hi-5 --  $2,655.72 on first race.
*Rainbow 6 -- $33,819.65 on races five through ten. The sequence  is scheduled to  start at 3:35 p.m.
*Late Pick 5 -- $16,430.17 on races six through ten. The sequence is scheduled to start at 4:07 p.m.

On Friday, as a result of two long-shot winners, there were no tickets with the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races and no tickets with the winners of all five Late Pick 5  races.

So, Gulfstream made a non-jackpot payoff on  tickets with  winners of five Rainbow 6 races. There were 23 such tickets and each received $853.54 on the 20 cent only bet.

Friday was the second straight  day without any tickets with all  six winners.

Friday's Rainbow 6 wagering was $35,072.  Of that Gulfstream took out 20 percent, divided 56 percent among tickets with five winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

On the Late Pick 5, the payoff on a minimum 50 cent bet was $211.85.  The number of winning tickets was not readily available.

Betting on the Late Pick 5 was $23,778. With the carryover, we expect that more than $100,000 will be bet on the Late Pick 5 on Saturday.

On Friday, Miss Moochie won the sixth race at  16-1 and Hogans Holiday won the featured eighth race at 20-1.

The eighth race was 1 1/16 miles on turf for  fillies and mares 3-years old and up.  It was an  allowance with a $47,000 purse and an optional claiming price of $35,000.

Hogans Holiday,  not in for a tag, was fourth entering the stretch.  She rallied to beat Southern Sis by three-quarters of a length.

Leonel Reyes  rode Hogans Holiday for trainer Marcus Vitali and owner John Grossi Racing Corp.

The winning time was 1:44.96 on the course listed as firm.

The GP West meet is at Calder in Miami Gardens.

On Thursday, there were no  tickets with  the winning horses in all  six Rainbow 6 races.

So, GP West made a payoff to tickets that had  five  winners.  There were 27 of the, and each received $523.08 on the 20-cent only bet.

A large number of tickets were knocked out of the Rainbow 6 when Cat's Astray, at 13-1, won the opening leg third race.

Odds on the other five winning horses were 8-1 or lower

Program numbers of the winning horses were 8-3-1-7-6-4.

The Late Pick 5 paid $2,003.53  on the minimum 50 cent bet.  The number of winning tickets was not  readily available.

Thursday's wagering on the Rainbow 6 was
$25,224.  Of that, Gulfstream  took out 20  percent, divided 56 percent among the tickets with five  winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

The carryover on the Rainbow 6 will be $14,224. It will be on races three through eight, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:21 p.m.

On Sunday, there were five Rainbow 6 tickets with all six winners. Each ticket paid  $3,121 on the 20-cent only bet.

Program numbers of the winning horses were  11-10-8-2-1-3. Two winners were favorites, and all other winners were 9-1 or lower.

The six races had 61 starters - adding to the difficulty of the wager.

Sunday's wagering on the Rainbow 6 was $33,449.  Of that, GP West took out 20 percent, divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

The Gulfstream Park West meet, held at Calder, will have a  ten-race card on Sunday with first post at 1:15 p.m.

The carryover on the Rainbow 6 is $6,228.  It will be on races five through ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:26 p.m. The six races have 69 entrants, including Main Track Only and Also Eligible.

There are no stakes races on the card. The eighth and ninth race co-features are allowance optional claimers with $42,000 purses.

Here are highlights from  Sunday's ten-race card:

* The Late Pick 5 (races six through ten) had a carryover of $20,288. That was a consequence of no tickets with all five winners on that bet on Friday's card.

Bettors on Saturday added $95,698 to the Late Pick 5 pool.

The payoff for five-of-five was $324.10 on the minimum 50 cent bet.  There were an undetermined number of winning tickets.

Average Daily Handle on Races Run at Gulfstream Declined 1.8 Percent During 2018 Summer Meet

By Jim Freer and Barry Unterbrink

At this year's Gulfstream Park summer meet, average daily total handle on races run at Gulfstream was $5.51 million, according to HorseracingFLA's review of Equibase charts for Gulfstream races.

That was a decline of 1.8 percent from Gulfstream's summer meet record of $5.61 million set in 2017.

Total handle on races run at Gulfstream was $309 million for 56 days during the 2018
summer meet, compared with $292 million for 52 days during the 2017 summer meet.

EDITOR'S NOTE -- On Monday Oct. 8, Gulfstream sent out a news release stating that "total handle for the 2018 summer meet was $369 million compared  to $345 million for 2017."

That news release did not provide details on the components of those  "total handle" numbers. As of Friday night, Gulfstream had not responded to our request for a clarification.

For some race meets, Gulfstream has announced total handle  numbers that are the combination of bets made on races run  at Gulfstream and of bets made on Latin American Racing Channel (LARC) races for which Gulfstream distributed the signal throughout North America.

On most days, Gulfstream or its sister track  Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., carry at least several LARC races from thoroughbred tracks in Chile, Argentina or Uruguay. The Stronach Group owns Gulfstream, Laurel and four other thoroughbred tracks in the United States.

--Jim Freer

Our review of Equibase charts also shows these summer meet comparisons for races run at Gulfstream:

Average number of starters per race increased 2.6 percent from 8.13 for the 2017 meet to 8.34 for the 2018 summer meet.

Average daily purses grew 3.46 percent from $336.8 million for the summer 2017 meet to $349.0 million for this year's summer meet.

The average daily numbers are not altered due to the four less race days during the 2017 meet. Hurricane Irma forced closure of racing for seven straight days last September, and three make up days of racing were not enough to offset that.

Gulfstream held its 2018 summer meet from July 1 to September 30th.

Gulfstream officials have told  us several times that the handle-related numbers we have reported are accurate.

This summer's decrease in handle on races at Gulfstream can be attributed, in part, to rain and other weather-related conditions.

Gulfstream during this summer's 56-day meet took 65 races off the turf due to rain and other wet conditions. During its 2017 summer meet, over 52 race days, Gulfstream moved 47 races from turf dirt.

Those surface switches usually lead to several or more scratches, and result in lower handle than if a race stayed on turf.

Total handle (also known as all-sources handle) is the combination of all legal bets placed on a track's races.

It includes: live on-track handle; betting at other race tracks and other pari-mutuels; siumulcast wagering, and off track betting  outlets; advance deposit wagering via computer and phone services; bets at sports books in Nevada and several other states; and bets at some off-shore sports books.

Breakdowns of components of Gulfstream's handle for the two most recent summer meets are not readily available.

Saturday's G.P. West Card; Carryovers

Gulfstream Park plans a 10-race card on Saturday, with 94 starters listed to run at Calder Race Track in Miami Gardens, Fla. Five turf races (#2,4,6,8,10) are planned with a first post time of 1:15 PM ET.
In Friday’s action, 71 starters (15 scratches), ran under cloudy/firm conditions. Just one odds favorite (race 3), hit the win column with Heidi Ho winning by 4-1/2 lengths saddled by Edgard Zayas.

The surprise on the day was Si Te Vas (If you go in English), winning the last race at 28:1 odds. That upset the Late Pick 5, which paid $168.50 on 4 of 5, and sets up a nice $20,222 carryover for Saturday.
The Rainbow 6 wager paid out $23,222.80 to a single winning bettor. That last race had just 6 starters, and – being a two-year-old jaunt – perhaps the bettor went ALL on that last leg. The late Pick 4 paid $2,023 on 4 of 4.
Nonetheless, the safer bet Saturday will be the Pick 5 since you are playing with the losers money of Friday in the mix with the carryover vs. no carryover on the Rainbow 6.
Total handle was $3.75 million.
Good luck and thanks for reading.
