Tiz rhe Law Retired from Racing with Leg Injury, After Career that Included Florida Derby Win

HRFLA Staff Report

Tiz the Law, the winner of the Florida Derby (Grade 1) at Gulfstream Park and three other graded stakes in 2020, has been retired from racing due to what his owner said is severe bone bruising near the bottom of a front leg.

In an announcement on Twitter on Wednesday evening, Sackatoga Stable said it made that decision based on the advice of a veterinarian.

Jack Knowlton, Sackatoga's principal owner had planned to run Tiz the Law in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (Grade 1) at Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach, Fla., on Jan. 23.

Since early December, Tiz the Law had been in training at the Palm Meadows  Training Center in Boynton Beach, Fla. Stronach Group owns Gulfstream and Palm Meadows.

Tiz the Law on Wednesday was sent to Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., where he will begin his breeding career.

This year Tiz the Law also won the Holy Bull (Grade 3) at Gulfstream, the Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park and the Travers (Grade 1) at Saratoga.

The Belmont was the first race, rather than the third, in this year's  Triple Crown series for 3-year-olds that was revised amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tiz the Law finished second to Authentic in the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Sept. 6.  He closed his season, and what turned out to be his career, on Nov. 7. with a seventh place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic (Grade 1) at Keeneland.

Tiz the Law won  six of his nine career races and had total earnings of $2,735,300.

He is a New York-bred son of Constitution, the winner of the 2014 Florida Derby. His maternal grandsire  is Tiznow, who won the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2000 and in 2001.

Tiz the Law was trained by Barclay Tagg and ridden in all of his races by Manuel Franco.

Tiz the Law had a large fan base  partly because Sackatoga and Tagg teamed up with Funny Cide.  In 2003, that popular New York-bred gelding won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and then finished third in the Belmont behind Empire Maker and Ten Most Wanted.

Super Hi-5 Pays $1,967 at Gulfstream

The carried-over Super Hi-5 was hit on multiple tickets in Wednesday's second race at Gulfstream Park and it paid $1,967.90 on the minimum $1 bet.

Siesta Moon (5), at 7-2, won the race. The number of winning tickets could not be readily determined.

Program numbers of the first five finishers were 5-3-2-6-7.

The carryover coming into the second race was $47,587.439. Bettors added $191,612 to the pool.\\

The winning tickets divided the entire carryover plus 83 percent of the bet on the race (17 percent) carryover.

Gulfstream has the Super Hi-5 on all races with seven or more starters.

There were no tickets with the first five finishers in correct order in the Super Hi-5 inWednesday's first race at Gulfstream.

Thus the carryover keeps growing and will be $47,587. 39 for the second race with post at 1:06 p.m.

It is a $6,250 claimer for 3-Y0 and up, at  six furlongs  on dirt. There are eight entrants.

Delacour wins at 32% with new runners and she could go gate to wire today.

The Weather Channel forecast is for just a ten percent chance of rain in the area around Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach, Fla.  That indicates that conditions will again be fast and firm.

Gulfstream has not taken a race off the turf during the first 19 days of its 2020-2021 championship  meet.  At this point last season, Gulfstream had  taken 22 of 117 scheduled-for-turf races to dirt due to rain or other wet conditions.

We will have coverage of today's races and other Gulfstream news on this blog.

Gulfstream Continues "No Spectators" Racing, But Handle Matches Last Season's Pace

By Jim Freer and Barry Unterbrink

Gulfstream Park is not open for general spectators because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but from off-track sources such as Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) it still had an impressive $11,772,202 in total handle on eleven races on Sunday.

That number is from Equibase's chart on Gulfstream's races. HorseRacingFLA's review of that data shows that the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track is keeping pace in handle with its 2019-2020 championship meet, when it allowed spectators from early December through mid-March.

Gulfstream's average daily handle was approximately $9.1 million for 19 race days through this past Sunday Dec, 27.  Through Dec. 29, 2019  that average for 22 race days was approximately $8.9 million.

Our review shows that Gulfstream's average daily handle for its 2019-2020 championship meet, which ended March 29, was $11.3 million-its best ever for a race meet.

Gulfstream has not allowed regular spectators since March 15.  This month, it has luxury suite rentals and other private viewing of races available on what it calls a limited basis.

Gulfstream and Equibase do not routinely provide breakdowns of how much handle is on-track  and  how much is from various off-track components.

However, it should be noted that Gulfstream's significant growth in handle, amid the industry's slight handle decline, took place during a year when the ADW share of  betting on U.S. thoroughbred races shot up from about 40 percent to about 70 percent.

Betting on ADWs has grown in tandem with Gulfstream's handle, and it appears that ADWs have been a very large part of Gulfstream's increases.  This month, ADWs  probably are making up for the vast majority of its temporary loss of on-track bets.

An ADW is linked to a client's bank account to provide funds for betting.

Among the largest ADWs are: 1/ST BET, owned by The Stronach Group which  also owns Gulfstream; Twinspires, owned  by Churchill Downs Inc.: TVG, owned by Flutter Inc.: and DRF Bets, owned by Daily Racing Form.

The Thoroughbred Idea Foundation, a Lexington, Ky.-based research group, pointed us to this data:

*The Oregon Racing Commission, a regulator of ADWs, reported that ADW betting on  U.S. thoroughbred races was about $4.0 billion between April and September this year.

*Equibase's monthly Economic Indicators reports show that  total      betting was $5.8 billion on races at U.S. thoroughbred  tracks during those six months.  Those reports are based on data  that tracks  provide to Equibase.

Our review of Equibase charts shows that Gulfstream's  total handle was about $610 million, or $5.6 million per day, during the  six months between April and September 2019.

For those six months this year, Gulfstream's total handle soared to  about  $1.02 billion. That is a per day average of $9.6 million over 107 race days.

Colonel Liam Rolls in Tropical Park Derby; Vigilantes Way and Sir Anthony Win GP Stakes

Robert and Lawana Low’s Colonel Liam overwhelmed nine rivals in Saturday’s $75,000 Tropical Park Derby, making an emphatic case for being extended an invitation to the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational (G1) Jan. 23 at Gulfstream Park.

The Tropical Park Derby, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds, highlighted Saturday’s 11-race program at Gulfstream,  along with the $75,000 Tropical Park Oaks, a 1 1/16 turf stakes for 3-year-old fillie
s, and the $75,000 H. Allen Jerkens, a two-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds and up.

Julien Leparoux was the winning jockey in both of those races. He rode Vigilantes Way, who led at every call and won the Tropical Park Oaks by 2 1/4 lengths over More Than Unusual.

Vigilantes Way, at  5-2, was clocked  in 1:40.61--faster than Colonel Liam two races earlier.  It was her first stakes win. Vigilantes Way, a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, is trained by Shug McGaughey for his long-time breeder-owner client the Phipps Family.

In the H. Allen Jerkens, Leparoux rode 28-1 shot Sir Anthony to a  come-from behind win.  They caught Conviction Trade just inside the eighth pole and went on to beat him by three-quarters of a length. Sir Anthony, trained by William Mitchell had a winning time of 3:19.48 on the course listed as firm.

Colonel Liam, the 6-5 favorite ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., was making his first start since Aug. 20 but showed no rust at all while pulling away to a 3 ¼- length victory.

“He’d been training exceptionally well leading to this. We’re happy to get him back,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “Hopefully, that earns him a spot in the Pegasus Turf.”

The son of Liam’s Map rated several lengths behind the early pace while clear on the outside. Don Juan Kitten cut fractions of 24.30 and 48.51 seconds for the first half mile under Edgard Zayas and continued to show the way heading into the turn for the homestretch, as Colonel Liam launched a breathtaking outside sweep that would carry him to the lead at the top of the stretch. The Kentucky-bred colt powered away from the field without much urging from Ortiz.

"I had a good trip, I broke out of there and tried to get a good position,” Ortiz Jr. said. “After the three eighths pole, I tried to move on because I have probably the best horse and let him pick it up and he responded very well. He's a very nice horse."

Don Juan Kitten held second, a neck ahead of Summer to Remember.

Colonel Liam ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.05 to record his third victory in five career starts. The $1.2 million purchase at the 2019 OBS April sale graduated via the disqualification of the first-place finisher in his April 11 debut over Gulfstream’s main track before finishing third in an optional claiming allowance at the Hallandale Beach track May 20.

Two months later, Colonel Liam scored an impressive 2 ¾-length allowance victory in his turf debut at Saratoga, before enduring a nightmare trip in a fourth-place finish in the Saratoga Derby, in which he was beaten by less than a length by victorious Domestic Spending.

“He’s really taken to the turf. We saw that in his allowance at Saratoga. He got in a little trouble in the Saratoga Derby,” Pletcher said. “He came back great. I thought it was an impressive race. He kind of made a little bit of an early move and kept on going.”

Colonel Liam gives Pletcher three prime candidates for the Pegasus Turf, joining Largent, who captured the Fort Lauderdale (G2) at Gulfstream Dec. 12, and
Social Paranoia, a multiple graded-stakes winner and recent optional claiming allowance winner at Gulfstream.

“Obviously, anytime you can get your name thrown into the hat of any of those Pegasus races, you’ve got to get excited,” stable manager Jacob West said. “Todd had kind of hatched that plan weeks ago. He said if he runs well we might point to that. Obviously after today’s performance we’ll point to that.”

Duopoly, at 6-1, won Saturday's $300,000 American Oaks (Grade 1) at Santa Anita.

Flavien Prat rode Duopoly, a daughter of the 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom.  Chad Brown trains Duopoly for owner Klaravich Stables.

Luck Money. who has been training at Tampa Bay Downs, finished fifth in a ten-horse field of 3-YO fillies in the 1 1/4 mile turf race.

Arnaud Delacour trains Luck Money  for breeder-owner Dr. Catherine  Wills.

Delacour trainee Eres Tu won today's Allaire DuPont Stakes (Grade 3) at Laurel.

He later sent Niceno out to win the MSW 8th race at Tampa Bay.

Delacour's winter base is Tampa Bay Downs, and Luck Money has been training there.

Gulfstream will pay out the entire carryover  of $839,334 and 80 percent of today's Rainbow 6 bet (20 percent takeout)-- regardless of the number of tickets with all six Rainbow 6 winning horses.

In its promos, Gulfstream said it expects the Rainbow 6 pool will be about $4  million.  Based on Gulfstream wagering history, we expect the pool Will be about $6 million, including about $5 million bet today.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & FIRM at TAMPA

Race 8 features a well matched field of Fillies and Mares, three and up, sprinting five furlongs on the lawn under $32,000 NW2X Optional Claiming conditions.

Post time is scheduled for 3:50 PM, live coverage will start on RadioStPete online at 3:48.

BONITA ANNIE (7) has shown an affinity for the grassy five furlong trip, she has scored a win and a place in two attempts. In her last outing, she closed stoutly to miss by only a neck after a slow start.

Red-hot rider Antonio Gallardo takes the mount for the first time and they may have a target in the need to lead rival BUCKY'S DRAMA (4), who has ample early foot, but may come up short in the stretch. BONITA ANNIE, a five year old Mare, can get her picture taken this afternoon.

THE BET      $20 to win on BONITA ANNIE (7) and a $5 exacta box with BUCKY'S DRAMA (4)  and THINKIN COWTOWN (6)   4,6,7                                      Total Bet $50       GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS  12/8  Lost $22, the bankroll is $1061.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & GOOD at TAMPA

Race 7, Post time scheduled for 3:50 PM, should be a good betting affair with a full field of ten three year old and up $16,000 Claiming Fillies and Mares going eight and one-half grassy furlongs. Live coverage will start on RadioStPete online at 3:48.

ANTALYA (8) gets the bet in a difficult handicapping chore. It appears that there is an abundance of early foot in this field and perhaps there will be a good setup for a closer. ANTALYA (8) has late pace figures that suggest this five year old mare might like the additional half furlong today as she won her last race closing at a flat mile. Leading jockey Samy Camacho rides for veteran trainer Tony Granitz.

THE BET  $10 to win on ANTALYA (8) and a $2 exacta box with FUN PADDY (1) and ELUSIVE RIDER (6) 1,6,8  Total Bet $22   GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS  12/16  Our win bet ran second, but the exacta box was the saver, returning $61 on the $50 total bet. The $11 profit brings the bankroll to $1083.

Gulfstream: Thursday Rainbow 6 Carryover is $668,449; Mandatory Payout Scheduled for Saturday

HRFLA Staff Report

Gulfstream Park will have ten races on Thursday with first post of 12:35 p.m.,

A big attraction will be the Rainbow 6, with  a carryover of $668,449 and the prospect of a multi-million dollar pool on Saturday when there will be a mandatory payout on that bet.

The Rainbow 6 is a 20  cents per combination-only bet. On Thursday, it will be on races five through ten, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:38 p.m.

That carryover has been growing because Gulfstream has gone all eleven days of its 2020-2021 championship meet with multiple tickets that have the winners of all six Rainbow 6 races.

When there are multiple Rainbow 6 winning tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bet, It distributes 56 percent among tickets with six winners and adds 24 percent to the carryover,.

When there is just one ticket with all six winners, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent and then pays the ticket holder 80 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet and the entire coming-in  carryover.

On Saturday, Gulfstream will pay out the jackpot--regardless of the number of tickets with all six winners.

If the Rainbow 6 is not "taken down" by a single ticket on Thursday or Friday, the carryover will likely be in the $900,000 range on Saturday and betting on the Rainbow 6 would be $5 million or more.

It the Rainbow 6 is hit on Thursday, and then not on Friday, the carryover for Saturday likely would be about $75,000.  If it is not hit on Friday, there will be no carryover on Saturday.  But in either case, Rainbow 6 betting on Saturday  probably would be $500,000 or more,  due to the attraction of a mandatory payoff.

Super Hi-5 Pays $2,096.50 at Gulfstream

The carried over Super-Hi 5 was hit on multiple tickets in the second race at Gulfstream on Wednesday and it paid $2,096.50  on the minimum $1 bet.

Program numbers of the first five finishers were 2-4-3-7-5.

There was a carryover of $29,861.05--built up over the last two races on Sunday and the first race on Wednesday.  Bettors added $96,024 in Wednesday's second race.

Gulfstream Super Hi-5 Carrryov er Grows to $29,000

There were no tickets with the first five finisher in the Super Hi-5 in the first race at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday.

Thus a carryover continues and will be $29.861.09 tin the second race with post timed at 1:05 p.m.

Program numbers of the first five finishers were 6-12-3-10-5.

The winner Nicole Princess was 7-2.  The second , fourth and fifth finishers were 20-1 or higher.

There was a carryover of $13,759.  Bettors added $19,527,  Gulfstream took out 18 percent of that and added the rest to the carryover

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & FIRM at TAMPA

Today's feature is Race 7, Post time is scheduled for 3:45 PM. Three year olds and upward will sprint seven panels on the main track under $8,000 NW3L Claiming conditions. Live coverage will start at 3:43 on Internet station RadioStPete

TONY SMALL (8) ships in for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. off a score at this distance over NW2L rivals at Gulfstream Park West on November 21st. He earned the best figure in the field with that effort and a repeat here would be no surprise.

Also, leading jock Camacho rides and the Joseph outfit wins back at 41% with claimers after a victory. This son of DISTORTED HUMOR dosen't mind a wet track, rain is predicted this afternoon.

THE BET  $20 to win on TONY SMALL (8) and a $3 exacta box with DON H. (9) and FEDERAL CASE (10)  8,9,10  Total Bet $50  GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS:  Lost $66, the bet amount was reduced due to late scratches. The bankroll is now at $1072.00

Tampa Bay: Nine Races on Wednesday; Sundays Added This Week

Tampa Bay  Downs will have nine races on Wednesday, with first post at 12:42 p.m.

The only carryover is $10,597 on the Pick 6.

The 20 cents per combination-only bet is on races four to ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:10 p.m.

This will be the Oldsmar, Fla., track's first four-day race week  of its 2020-2021 meet.  It will add  Sundays beginning Dec. 20.

Tampa Bay will then have racing  on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during most weeks of its meet that will run through May 2.

One exception will be next week, which is Christmas week.

Tampa Bay Downs will have racing on Thursday Dec. 24 and not on Friday Dec. 25.

Gulfstream on Wednesday: Large Carryovers on Rainbow 6 and Super H-5

HRFLA Staff Report

After being dark Monday and Tuesday, Gulfstream Park will resume racing on Wednesday with two attractive carryovers.

First post will be 12:35p.m. for a ten-race  card at the track in Hallandale Beach, Fla,

The first race has a Super Hi-5 carryover  of $13,957.

The Rainbow 6 has a carryover of $579,853.  The 20 cents per combination-only bet will be on races five to ten with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:36 p.m.

This link to  the Equibase web site has the Gulfstream  entries for Wednesday.  It has click-ons for handicapping material.  Some is free. Some, including past performances, is at cost.

The  third, sixth, seventh, ninth and tenth races are schedule for turf.

Gulfstream has run all 52 scheduled-for-turf races on that surffaace during the first ten days of its chmpionship meet, It also had no races taken off the turf at this stage of its 2019-2020 championship meet.

South Florida is coming off a very rainy October and November--the months when Gulfstream held its last Gulfstream Park West meet at Calder in Miami Gardens.

On Sunday, each ticket with all six Rainbow 6 winners cashed $1,206.26 on a 20 cent bet. HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows there were 182 such tickets.

Program numbers of the six winning horses were 7-2-5-1-5-3..

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the Rainbow 6 pool will be at least $900,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winning horses.  If the total of the carryover and new Rainbow 6 bets is less than $900.000, Gulfstream will need to put in the difference.

There have been multiple winning Rainbow 6 tickets on each of the first ten days of the 2020-2021 championship meet.

On Sunday, $392,853 was bet on the Rainbow 6. Of that, Gulfstream took out 20 percent and then divided 56 percent among tickets with six winners.

Super Hi-5

On Sunday, there were no winning tickets on the Super Hi-5 in either of the last two races.

The  bet is $1 minimum and requires picking the first five finishers in correct order--with no consolation payoffs such as four of five .

If the Hi-5 is not hit, 82 percent of the new bet (18 percent takeout) and all of the incoming carryover is carried over to the next race with seven or more starters.

At Gulfstream. the Super Hi-5 usually attracts less than $5,000 if  there is no carryover.

A carryover of Monday's size at the start of a day (more time for handicapping) will often draw $50,000  or more. If it carries to the next race, it often attracts $100,00 or more as new bettors come in attempting to win money that others have lost.

By then what some people call a sucker bet has become a "vulture bet"  We like the term "Gold Rush bet."

Wednesday's first race is a $12,500 maiden claimer for 2-YO fillies.

There are fourteen entrants, including two Also Eligibles.

The key to the race could be whether Piper (14) draws in. She has two second place  finishes and two third place finishes in her last four starts, all at higher claiming prices than Wednesday's race.

She has shown speed, and will need to show it early from the far outside. Edgard Zayas has the mount for trainer Juan Alvarado.

Facts Only (3) is the other horse that most bettors will have in the one hole in the Hi-5 bet. She is cutting back from a one mile turf race at GP West, with a speed figure that is the best in Wednesday's field.

Facts Only, trained by Kathy Davey, will draw support partly because her return mount rider is red-hot Paco Lopez who leads Gulfstream jockeys with eighteen wins after ten days

If Pitufina (13) gets in, she rates a strong chance to finish in the top five as do Sierra Diamond (9) and Fifth Illusion (2). Beyond that it is a challenge, partly because five entrants are first-time starters.

Because, the Super Hi-5 could carry over, it is wise to do some advance handicapping on it for the second race. If there is a scratch in the second race, it would reduce the field to six. That suggests taking a look at the third race, which has eight entrants.

Rainbow 6 -- 579 Live Tickets

Five races have been run in the Rainbow 6 at Gulfsteam.

Winners with (program numbers in parentheses were:

* seventh - Bany Bother   (2) 7-1

* eighth - Lenzis Lucky Lady (5) 8-1

* ninth - Frosted Grace (1) 2-1

* tenth - Morocco (5-2)

Betting was $392,853 on the Rainbow 6--added to a $485,857 carryover.

There are 579 live tickets, with no  horses singled.

Post time for the 11th race is 5:11

Horse Racing FLA

GP Rainbow 6 Coming Up With $485,000 Carryover

Conditions are Fast and Frm at Gulfstream Park for Sunday's 11-race  card.

The carryover on the Rainbow 6 is $485,567.

The 20 cents per combination-only  bet is on races six to eleven, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:38 p.m.

Gulfstream is guaranteeing that the Rainbow 6 pool will be at least $800,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winners.  Such a ticket would take down the entire Rainbow 6 carryover plus 80 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet.

Please keep in mind that Gulfstream is starting races ON TIME.  Until  last week, it was semi-notorious for delayed starts, partly to get more money in on exotic bets like the Rainbow 6.

This link to the EquibaseWeb site has Sunday's Gulfstream entries.

It has click-ons for handicapping material--some at cost, including Past Performances, and some free.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & FIRM at TAMPA

Race 5, Post time scheduled for 2:42 PM, presents a compact but contentious group of a half-dozen two year-olds, going a mile on turf under Optional Claiming $75,000 NW1X conditions. Live coverage will start at 2:40 on Radio StPete.com online.

INNER GHOST (2) from the Mike Stidham outfit, maybe the key to unlock what could be a puzzling handicapping chore. This son of GHOSTZAPPER was an impressive Maiden winner at five furlongs over the Monmouth lawn, back on August 21. Today, he gets blinkers on and should be able to use his sprint speed to get to the front early and lead the field on a merry chase. Hector Diaz Jr. rode this youngster to his first tally and has a good shot at another here.

THE BET  $20 to win on INNER GHOST (2) and a $2 exacta box with CAVE HILL (1) and PLAMAN (3) 1,2,3.   Total Bet $32    GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS  12/9  Had a nice winner, but missed the exacta. The $20 win bet returned $142.00, a profit of $104 on the $38 in wagers. The bankroll is now at $1170, plus $170 from opening day.

Tampa Bay Hikes Non-Stakes Purses 10 Percent, Citing Horsemen's Efforts and strong Handle

From Tampa Bay Downs

Tampa Bay Downs will increase purses for all races except stakes by approximately 10-percent beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Peter Berube, the  track 'sVice  President-General Manager  said the increase will be $1,500 for maiden special weight and allowance races and $1,000 for claiming and starter races.

“Thanks to the efforts of former (Tampa Bay Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association) President Bob Jeffries and the approval of their board, we were able to build a substantial cushion in the purse account before the current meeting,” Berube said.

“Our export (simulcast) business has been strong since racing returned on Nov. 25 and is up 29to date,” Berube said.

Due to COVID-19 precautions, Tampa Bay did not have spectators at its races between mid March and July 1 this year.

It has had spectators sine it resumed racing on Nov. 25.  They are required to wear masks  at all times and there are social distancing and sanitzing requirements.

"We were projectin a 30-35-percent decrease in on-track wagering on live and simulcast racing to start the meeting and those projections have been correct, but the actions of the Tampa Bay HBPA and the popularity of our signal across the country enable us to feel comfortable raising purses starting next week,” Berube said.

Through the first six cards since the 2020-2021 meeting resumed, Tampa Bay Downs has averaged $3,719,055 in daily interstate wagering. The total wagering handle on Saturday’s 10-race card was a Cotillion Festival Day record $6,128,282, of which $5,702,369 was through interstate wagering.

Around the oval. Tampa Bay Downs currently races on a Wednesday-Friday-Saturday schedule, with Sundays added to the mix on Dec. 20. Additionally, the track will conduct a Thursday card on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, and be closed Christmas, Dec. 25.

Otherwise, Tampa Bay Downs is open every day for simulcast wagering, no-limits action and tournament play in The Silks Poker Room and golf fun and instruction at The Downs Golf Practice Facility.

The Rainbow 6, a 20 cents per combination-only bet will be on races five through ten, with the sequence scheduled to  start at 2:36 p.m.

Jesus' Team, Saez and Bettors Star at Claiming

By Jim Freer
On Saturday, Gulfstream Park held the national Claiming Crown race day that included nine stakes races restricted to horses that have raced at least once at or below a designated claiming price.

Here are highlights.  We will have more details later on Sunday.

*Jesus' Team, the 2-5 favorite, beat 13-1 shot Storm Runner by three-quarters of a length in the  featured $150,000  Jewel, at 1 1/8 miles on dirt for 3-year-olds and up.

Trainer Jose D'Angelo said he expects that Jesus' Team (pronounced hay-SOOS) will race next in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (Grade 1) at 1 1/8 miles on dirt  at Gulfstream on Jan. 23.

Luis Saez rode Jesus' Team and five other winners on the 11-race card.

*Even without spectators at Gulfstream and thus with no betting on-track, all-sources handle for the day was $14.6 million.

That was a record in the 22-year history of the Claiming Crown, which has been held at Gulfstream the past nine years.

The previous record was $13.9 million on the 2019 Claiming Crown, on Saturday Dec. 7. That was prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and
Gulfstream was able to have spectators and on-track betting.

Last year and this year, there were eleven Claiming Crown races with Fast and Firm conditions.

For both days, Gulfstream did not provide breakdowns of how much betting was done via Advance Deposit Wagering (ADWs) and how much was done at simulcast locations, such as racetracks and OTB offices.

Data from the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering show that on-site wagering on Gulfstream races has been falling for several years, and was about 6 percent of that track's All-Sources handle in 2019.  That mirrors handle trends at many U.S. thoroughbred tracks.

Meanwhile, several industry studies show that ADWs now make up approximately 65 percent of betting at U.S. thoroughbred tracks.

In upcoming days we will have stories about those betting trends, particularly at Gulfstream and at Tampa Bay Downs.

Cajun Embers (4) at 31-1 took the lead in deep stretch andx held off a late bid by the 3-1 favorite Reliability (2) and won by a head in Sunday's fifth race at Gulfstream Park.

The race was the start of the Rainbow 6. The carryover coming in was $ 166,907.  Bettors added $246,380 to the pool.

Super Hi-5 Pays $100,000 at Gulfstream

The Super Hi-5 was hit on Sunday's second race at Gulfstream, and there was just one winning ticket that paid $101,738 on the $1 bet.

The race had  a $33,907 carryover. Bettors added $78,097 to the pool.

Program numbers of the first five finishers were 6-9-1-10-7.

Gulfstream has the Super Hi-5 on all races with seven or more starters.  It is $1 minimum, with a 15 percent takeout, with no consolation payoffs such as four-out-of-five. That can lead to large carryovers, such as on today's second race.

Gulfstream Fast and Firm for Sunday

Gulfstream Park has a ten-race card on Sunday, with first post at 12:35 p.m. and no stakes races.

Conditions are listed as Fast and Firm, and the Weather Channel forecast is for just a 15 percent chance of rain during racing hours.
1

The carryover on the Rainbow 6 is $166,997. The 20 cents per combination-only bet is on races six through ten, with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:36 p.m.

BAUER'S BETS: FAST & FIRM at TAMPA

Race 3, the Inaugural Stakes for the Boys, goes off at 1:10 pm. POPPY'S PRIDE (1) appears to be tough to beat in this short field and should be a prompt favorite.

THE BET  $20 to win on POPPY'S PRIDE (1)

Today, she gets the services of leading rider Camacho and tries the Oldsmar oval for the first time.

THE BET   $20 Win and Place on WHOLEBODEMEISTER (6) and a $2 exacta box with LITTLE NESSO (2) and FEELING MISCHIEF (5)   2,5,6.  Total Bets   $72              GOOD LUCK !!

QUALITY STEP (5) has been idle since bossing a field similar to these back on October 12th at Indiana Downs. This four-year old gelding earned a huge figure that day and a repeat of that form could win here, his record is 3-3-1 from 11 starts on the Tampa turf. Veteran trainer Keith Nations has shown the ability to get runners ready off a break. Alonzo Quinonez, who rode this one to a pair of in the money finishes last season, returns here.

THE BET  $10 to win on QUALITY STEP (5) and a $3 exacta box with WINDRACER (1) and AND WON (6). 1,5,6.  Total Bet $28  GOOD LUCK!!

Gulfstream: Two Carryovers on Thursday Card

Gulfstream has guaranteed that the jackpot payoff will be at least $75,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winners.

After its 20 percent takeout, Gulfstream divided 56 percent of those bets among tickets with six winners and put 24 percent into the new carryover.

Bennett Again Leads Tampa Bay Trainers; Racing Resumes Wednesday, Post at 12:20

HRFLA Staff Report

Gerald Bennett is off to a rapid start as he seeks to lead trainers in wins for a sixth straight  season at Tampa Bay Downs.

Bennett has five victories through Saturday, the  fourth day of Tampa Bay's 2020-2021 meet. Five  trainers are tied for second place at two wins.

Racing will resume at the Oldsmar, Fla., track on  Wednesday with nine races and first post of 12:20 p.m.

Bennett has two entrants on Wednesday. Unlike  many of his horses, neither is a morning line favorite.

Relishment is listed at 8-1 in the second race and Sacramento Q is listed at 9-2 in the third race.

That will be in Tampa Bay's first race day since Saturday, when Bennett fans received a rare high  payoff on two of his horses.

Play the Max, at 5-1, won the ninth race and Successful Legacy, at 7-1, won the tenth and final race. The 1-6 exacta had a $2 payoff of $181.40.

Both fillies ranked low  on speed figures in deep fields.

But Play the Max, with Daniel Centen  riding, wired a ten-horse field to win an $8,000 claiming race at six furlongs.

Successful Legacy, with Samy Camacho riding, rallied in the stretch to win a one-mile maiden claiming race on turf.

The trainers with two victories are Jose Delgado, Ron Potts,  Robert Raymond, Dennis Ward  and Eoin Harty.

Bennett saddled 61 winners at the 2019-2020 Tampa Bay meet. Kathleen O'Connell was second with 33 wins,  followed by Michael Stidham with 31.

Thus far, Stidham has one winner and O'Connell  is winless. Both can be  expected to rise high in the standings during the 90-day meet.

Camacho leads the jockey standings with  six wins. He won that competition in 2018-2019 and finished second to Antonio Gallardo last season. Ronald Allen Jr. is second with four wins. Mike Allen, Roberto Alvarado and Tomas Mejia each have three wins.

Gallardo has ridden two winners and Centeno, a five-time Tampa Bay riding champion, has one winner through Saturday.

On Saturday, Tampa Bay will have the first two stakes races of its meet.

The $100,000 Inaugural will be six furlongs on dirt for 2-YO males. The $100,000 Sandpiper will be six furlongs on dirt for 2-YO fillies.

Entries will be out late Wednesday afternoon.
