GP Saturday: Silks Run on Turf is Only Stakes

Here is a rundown on what is happening on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where first post is 12:10 p.m. for a twelve-race card.

*The only stakes race is the $75,000 Silks Run at five furlongs on turf for four-year-olds and up. It us the 11th race with scheduled post of 5:19 p.m.

*The $100,000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (Grade Grade 3) had been scheduled for this Saturday.  It did not draw what Gulfstream officials regarded as a sufficient number of entries. Gulfstream has rescheduled it for next Saturday March 20.

*The Rainbow 6 has a carryover of $142,075. The 20 cents per combination only bet is on races seven through twelve, with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:10 p.m.

The Weather  Channel forecast is for a zero percent chance of rain during racing hours.

The first race has a Super Hi-5 carryover of $3,236.

This link to the Equibase Web site has the Gulfstream entries for Saturday. It has click-ons for handicapping materials.  Some is free.  Some, including past performances, is at cost.  The link will update to show track conditions and other changes.

The Silks Run has nine entrants, including Carotari who won the race last year.  He won that race by a neck over Fig Jerry, who is not entered on Saturday.

Carotari comes into the Silks Run off  a second place finish in the $100,000 Texas Turf Sprint at Sam Houston Race Course in Houston on Jan. 31.

Carotari has two wins and a second place finish in three turf starts at Gulfstream. Julien Leparoux will ride for trainer Brian Lynch,

Mai Ty One On and Yes I Am Free are likely favorites, along with Carotari.

On Feb. 5, Mai Ty One On rallied and beat Yes I  Am Free by  a neck in a $62,500 optional claiming race at five furlongs on turf at Gulfstream.

On Saturday, Luis Saez has the return mount on Mai Ty One On for trainer Jane Cibelli and Emisael Jaramillo has the return mount on Yes I Am Free for trainer Mark Casse.

Mai Ty One On has hit the board on eight of ten turf starts at Gulfstream. Yes I Am Free has three wins and two second place finishes in five turf races at Gulfstream.

Rainbow 6

On a day for longshot winners, there were no tickets with all six winners in the Rainbow 6.

So, Gulfstream made its non-jackpot payout of $16,064.30  to all tickets with five winners.  HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows there were seven such tickets.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 2-6-4-6-1-6.

Four of the winners were at double-digit odds, one was 9-1 and the other was 6-1.

Wagering on the Rainbow 6  was $200,844. Of that, Gulfstream took out 20  percent, divided 56 percent among the tickets with five winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

On the Late Pick 5, $313,527 was bet.

Tickets with five winners paid $66,614.75 and tickets with four winners were paid $381.70 on the 50-cent minimum bet.  The number of winning tickets was not readily available.
