McCraken Sets Tampa Bay Track Record in Sam F. Davis

horseracingflaMcCraken  won Saturday's $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (Grade 3) on Saturday, setting a Tampa Bay  Downs track record of 1:42.45 for 1 1/16 miles on dirt.

He broke the track record of 1:42.82 that Destin set in winning the Tampa Bay Derby (Grade 2) last year. The Tampa Bay Derby and Sam F. Davis are both for 3-year-olds.

The win was the fourth for the unbeaten McCraken, and it added to his status as a top contender for the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) that will be run May 6.

McCraken took the lead in mid-stretch and beat the late-running Tapwrit by 1 1/2 lengths.

Brian Hernandez Jr. rode McCraken for trainer Ian Wilkes and owner Whitham Thoroughbreds.

This evening on this blog and on our Website we will have a detailed report on all four of today's Tampa Bay stakes races.
