Four 1st-Timers in 50,000 Maiden Claiming at Tampa

The second race at Tampa Bay Downs had a high claiming price of $50,000 for 3-year old fillies.

Four of the eight starters were first time starters, but the race went to one of the more experienced fillies, Ashleys Magens Bay ridden by the leading jockey Daniel Centeno for a clocked in finish of 1:12.12 for the short 6 furlong race.

She raced off the pace well, moved up three wide on the turn and closed well outside and drew clear for a 1 1/2 length victory over Karen Sue, the second place finisher. She is trained by Forrest Kaelin and owner by Betty L. Kaelin.

Karen Sue and Derval, the third place finisher are both trained by Kathleen O' Connell who has a good record with first timers.  In this race both her fillies ran well finishing by a neck within each other.

Karen Sue chased outside and dug in gamely towards the end, and Derval raced off the rail  she was four wide past the quarter pole and made a late bid outside.
