The second race took off right as the rain poured but that did not distract Impromptu, the 5-year old gelding rom Kentucky that beat out favorite Diaz and Foxhall Drive in a 1:47.98 clocked in finish.
The race was for 1 1/8 miles on the turf for four-year olds and up. The race had a total purse of $22,500.
The final odds for Impromptu were 10-1, an increase since the morning-line odds of 15-1. He finished 3/4 lengths ahead of Foxhall Drive, he angle out in the upper stretch that allowed him to separate himself and closed willingly. The favorite Diaz was off a bit slow, raced off the pace move up outside on the far turn but did not have enough to catch up.
Impromptu was ridden to victory by Dean P. Butler and is trained by Bernell B. Rhone. This was his first win this season for owner Empire Racing. The total Win Place Show pool came to $117, 716 and the charts are as follows:
