Publicist won Thursday's first race at the Gulfstream Park West, capturing a race that was moved from dirt to turf and leading the way for a Super Hi-5 payoff of $3,441.40 for the minimum $1 bet.
Publicist, trained by Carlo Vaccarezza, took the early lead and was never headed in the one mile race for $35,000 claimers. Eddie Castro rode Publicist, the 8-5 favorite, who won in 1:38.90.
The second through fourth place finishers were Elizabeth's Vow, Ace of Hearts and Trickita--all at 6-1 or lower in the nine-horse field
Finishing fifth was Sheezallminenow, at 99-1 on the tote board but undoubtedly higher. That triggered the high payoff on the Super HI-5.
There was a carryover of $2,595.65. Bettors added $13,662 to the Super Hi-5 field.
The order of finish was 4-9-1-2-3.
Trickita, mentioned in a previous post, made her first non-turf start. She appeared to have trouble with the muddy surface and was seventh until the stretch before rallying to finish fourth.
We suggest drawing a line through this race for Trickita, and will have an update when she is next entered for a turf race.
