It’s “Carryover Thursday” at GP West Meet

With three carryovers, Thursday’s Gulfstream Park West card will be like a three-ring circus for exotic bettors.

First post is 1:15 p.m. for the eight-race card, at the meet being run at Calder under sponsorship of Gulfstream Park. The carryover action will start at 2:17 p.m.

The carryovers are:
* Super Hi-5 -- $36,334.08 on third race with scheduled post of 2:17 p.m.; $1 minimum bet that requires picking the first five finishers in correct order.

We expect that more than $100,000 could be bet on the Super Hi-5, based on previous large overnight carryovers on the bet at Gulfstream and at GP West.

*Rainbow 6 -- $19,268.31 on races three through eight; 20-cent only bet that requires picking winners of each race.

*Late Pick 5 -- $10,763.89 on races four through eight; 50-cent minimum bet that requires picking the winners of each race.

We will have coverage during the afternoon on our blog, including a look at Wednesday’s longshot results that led to the carryovers.

The main track is listed as fast and the turf is listed as firm.  Five races are scheduled for turf.

The Weather Channel forecast is for rain chances ranging between 15 percent and 40 percent during racing hours in the area around Miami Gardens, where Calder is located.

The Super Hi-5 with the carryover was originally set for the first race. But two scratches reduced the field to six horses in that race.

Gulfstream requires at least seven starters to include the Super Hi-5 in a race. The second race has six entrants, and the third race has ten entrants.

Wednesday Results
Little United led at every call and beat Oh Kandrita by 1 ¾ lengths in the fifth race, at six furlongs on dirt for 2-year-old fillies.

Mi Cuaima finished third, a  half length behind Oh Kandrita.
The race had a $28,000 purse and a $35,000 optional claiming price. None of the seven starters were in for the tag.  All came in to the race with one win, and some familiarity among fans who follow Gulfstream and GP West.

Little United was the 2-1 second betting choice and Oh Kandrita was the 8-5 favorite. Mi Cuaima was 23-1. The $2 exacta paid  $20.80 and the $2 trifecta paid $127.60.

Little United  won in 1:11.89 on the track listed as fast. Emisael Jaramillo rode her for trainer Christos Gatis  and owner B.G. Havari  Inc.

Little United, a Florida-bred daughter of High Cotton, now has two wins in three career starts.

Wednesday’s race was the first for Little United for Havari and Gatis.

On Oct. 8 they claimed her for $25,000 out of a race at GP West, from Priscilla Vaccarezza and her husband Carlo Vaccarezza who was the filly’s trainer.

Little United won that 6 ½ furlong maiden claiming  race by 5 ½ lengths.

Spintalk won the seventh race, a $32,000 maiden special weight for 3-year-olds, by three lengths over Collective Wisdom.

Spintalk took the lead entering the stretch and went on to win in 1:23.24—a fast time for a 3-year-old at Calder.

Tyler Gaffalione rode for trainer Ralph Nicks and breeder/owner GoldMark Farm Inc.

Spintalk was the 5-2 second betting choice in the eight-horse field.

Illustrious Son, the 4-5 favorite, fell and tossed rider Edgard Zayas early in the race.  Both walked off and were reported as uninjured.

Spintalk is a Florida-bred son of Backtalk. He finished third in both of his previous starts, at Gulfstream.
