Gulfstream Park will have the first stakes race of its spring meet this afternoon with the $100,000 Miami Mile (Grade 3) on turf.
It is the seventh race with scheduled post of 4:26 p.m.
The eight-horse field has Smokem Kitten, who on March 20 set a Gulfstream record o 1:26.78 for 7 1/2 furlongs. That came in an allowance/optional claimer on a weekend when the course was exceptionally fast.
Edgar Prado will ride for trainer Mike Maker.
But based on his long-term record Middleburg, trained by Christophe Clement, is the likely favorite in the eight-horse field.
Middleburg is making his first start since last Oct. 15 when he finished sixth in the Knickerbocker (Grade 3) at Belmont Park.
In his previous start, he won the Cliff Hanger (Grade 3) at Monmouth Park.
Joe Gravo is back in South Florida to ride Middleburg, who has three wins in six starts on the Gulfstream turf.
