Manhattan Dan led gate to wire and won Friday's $60,000 Fisher Island Handicap at Gulfstream Park, setting himself up for a likely run in a rich race at Royal Ascot in England.
Manhattan Dan, the 1-5 favorite, was ridden by Elvis Trujillo and won in a fast 55.03 seconds in the five furlong turf stakes for 3-year-olds. Final Encore, the 7-2 second betting choice, finished second.
Trainer Gary Contessa used the Fisher Island as a prep for the Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) to be run at Royal Ascot on June 18. The race has a purse of approximately
$588,000 (400,000 pounds sterling) for 3-year-olds going six furlongs over a
straight turf course.
