Seven days ago, Copingaway ran in the Florida Derby (Grade 1) and finished sixth at 180-1 in the ten-horse field. He finished 17 lengths behind the winner Nyquist.
Copingaway is back at Gulfstream Park in today's eighth race--a much more reasonable spot. It is a $75,000 optional claimer with a $43,000 purse at 7 1/2 furlongs on turf for 3-year-olds.
Copingaway, not in for a tag, is listed at 4-1 in the morning line. He is winless in six starts this year, but has a second place finish and third place finish at 7 1/2 furlongs on the Gulfstream turf.
Trainer Jaime Mejia has given Eddie Castro the ride on Copingaway. It has been a coping year for Mejia, who is winless in 56 starts, mostly at Gulfstream.
Noble Quality, trained by Christophe Clement, is the likely favorite. It will be his first race since last Aug. 26 when he won at 7 1/2 furlongs on turf at Delaware Park. Edgard Zayas has the mount today.
