Sharp Azteca Wins Pat Day Mile

Sharp Azteca, owned by Gelfenstein Farm in Ocala, won  the Pat Day Mile (Grade 3) for 3-year-olds at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
 
Sharp Azteca. at 13-1. took the lead coming out of the turn and pulled away to win by 2 1/2 lengths over Forevamo in 1:34.37 on the  dirt track listed  as  fast. 

Star Hill finished third, followed by Fellowship in the 14-horse field.

Edgard Zayas rode for trainer Jorge Navarro. Gulfstream Park is the home track for both and also is the track where Gelfenstein races most  of its horses.

The Pat Day was the first stakes race  for Azteca.

Star Hill finished third  in this  year's Tampa Bay Derby (Grade 2) at  Tampa Bay Downs.

The Pat Day Mile was Fellowship's first race for trainer Mark Casse.  Early last month Jacks or Better Farm moved Fellowship and all of its other horses from Stan Gold to Casse.

Fellowship was 21st on the Kentucky Derby qualifying points list.  But Fred Brei, principal of Jacks or Better, decided not to take the also  eligible spot and instead chose  to run in the Pat Day.
