Gulfstream: Wednesday’s First Race Has Super Hi-5 Carryover of $32,146

The first race at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday is a $10,000 maiden claimer at 5 ½ furlongs on dirt for fillies and mares 3-YO and up.

Yet on Tuesday and into early Wednesday, thousands of fans around the country will be studying the past performances as if it were a stakes race.

That is because there is a carryover of $32,146.43 on the Super Hi-5 in the race—with post time of 1:15 p.m. to start the eight-race card.

There also is a carryover of $26,628.23 on the Rainbow 6, on races three through eight. Wednesday looms as a day when that 20-cent only per combination wager will vie for attention with the Super Hi-5.

On Sunday, Gulfstream’s most recent race day, there were no winning tickets on the Super Hi-5 on the last two races (9 and 10).

The $1 minimum bet requires picking the first five finishers in exact order.  There are no consolation payoffs,  such as four-of-five, and when the bet is not hit the entire pool rolls over into the next race with seven or more starters. The takeout is 18 percent.

Wednesday’s first race has eight entrants, with the Super Hi-5 scheduled.

Based on Gulfstream betting patterns, $50,000 or more could be added to the pool.  Consider that serious bettors are having almost three days to handicap.

As with many races at this level, a starting point is to toss several horses from consideration from the top two spots.  If  you are on a budget and daring, you might want to single one horse for first and go deep on some places between three and five. That would cost maybe $15.

We have narrowed the race to four horses for consideration for Win and Place.  They are (posts in parentheses):

*Key the Storm (4) showed big improvement his last race (second without blinkers) and led until the final strides before losing by a nose to Cold Blood at six furlongs at Gulfstream on April 30.  His 72 Brisnet Speed  Figure was the best “last outing” in the field.

Key the Storm was 50-1 that day, in a field of eleven. He will be much lower on Wednesday, especially in light of a three-furlong bullet workout at Gulfstream on Saturday.

The 3-year-old gelded son of Keyed Entry could seek to steal the race, at 110 yards shorter than last time.  Alvaro Donis has the return mount for trainer Mohamed Jehaludi.

*Sonaheir (5) will get attention partly because of the tandem of trainer Ralph Nicks and jockey Tyler Gaffalione.

In his debut on April 20, he raced wide the entire race at the $25,000 level and finished fifth in a nine-horse field while earning a 61 Brisnet figure.

*Morenazo (8) has raced mostly at levels higher than $10,000 and has some of the higher speed figures in the field. Five-pound apprentice Christian Navarro has the mount for trainer Antonio Sano.

*Second-time starter Jonathantwentytwo (1) could be a wild card in the field of non-achievers that have gone off at high double-digit odds in all their races.

The replay and PPs show he broke slowly and finished a dismal 11^th and last in his debut March 15 at Gulfstream. 

The race was a $16,000 claimer at five furlongs on turf.

Jonathantwentytwo appears bred for dirt, and is coming off two fast workouts on the deep track at Calder. If he breaks clean from the rail under John Cruz, the 3-year-old son of the speedy Sidney’s Candy has some possible upside in the weak field. 

Jonathantwentytwo is owned by Grupo 7c Racing Stable and trained by Gustavo Delgado, also the connections of local stakes stars Majesto and Grand Tito.
