City of Light Shines in Pegasus Win

Rain and approaching darkness proved to be no obstacles for City of Light on Saturday as he pulled ahead in the stretch and won the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (Grade 1) at Gulfstream Park.

On Monday, we will have stories that analyze the Pegasus race and review other races and events at Gulfstream for this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3.
 
City of Light (photo on home page) won the Pegasus by 5-3/4 lengths over the late-running Seeking the Soul in the 1 1/8 mile dirt race, run in the rain on a track that  was sealed and listed as Sloppy.

Accelerate, who  was challenging City of Light at the top of the stretch, fell back and finished third,1-1/2 length behind Seeking the Soul in the 12-horse field.
 
Accelerate was the slight favorite over City of Light, 1.5:1, 1.9:1. Odds on both horses were rounded to 9-5 in the charts. Seeking the Soul was 34-1.
 
The $2 exacta of 3-4 paid $82.20. The $2 trifecta of 3-4-5 paid $210.40.
City of Light, a 5-year-old son of Quality Road, won in the fast time of 1:47.41.
