Prado has “no major injuries” After Scary Gulfstream Spill

Edgar Prado escaped serious injury on Sunday when

his mount Legs Like Betty tossed him to the ground just after the start of the seventh race at Gulfstream Park.

Prado, a member of the National Racing Hall of Fame, was complaining of chest pain after the spill and was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

The Gulfstream media office later reported that Prado “had no major injuries, but was very sore.”

Breaking from outside post 14 in the 7 ½-furlong maiden turf sprint, Legs Like Betty bolted to the outside fence and dumped the 48-year-old Prado before jumping the temporary outer rail. After getting up, the 2-year-old filly got on the dirt track and ran to the top of the stretch before being caught by outriders.

Castor won the race by a nose over Conquest Dynasty. Castor is trained by Todd Pletcher and was ridden by John Velazquez.

Gulfstream’s next race day is Wednesday. Prado is listed on three mounts.

* Sunday was the seventh day of the 2015-2016 championship meet and was the first day when Gulfstream was able to keep all of its turf-scheduled races on that surface.

On other days since the Dec. 5 opener, Gulfstream has had to deal with rain or with a turf course that was still wet in spots from rain.

Five of Sunday’s ten races were run on turf. The average field size was 11.0. That helped Gulfstream attract all-sources handle of $7,243,899.

On the comparable Sunday last year, Dec. 14, Gulfstream had ten races with five on turf. The average number of starters also was 11.0. All-sources handle was $6,213,609.

Both days were rain free.
