Thursday at Gulfstream: Lady Zuzu Heads field for Turf Feature

Thursday at Gulfstream: Lady Zuzu Heads field for Turf Feature

HorseRacingFLA Staff Report
Lady Zuzu, a multiple graded stakes placed 3-year-old, heads the field for today’s ninth and feature race at Gulfstream Park.

It is a $25,000 optional claimer at 7 ½ furlongs on turf for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up with a $41,000 purse. Scheduled post is 4:35 p.m.300x250-banner_Dec-7-15

The race has 14 entrants, including Savingtime who is entered for the Main Track Only and likely would be among favorites if rain forces a move to that surface.

Gulfstream has a ten-race card today, with first post of 12:35 p.m.

Five of today’s races are scheduled for turf, and Gulfstream officials are hoping for clear skies that would enable races to stay on that surface.

As of 8:10 a.m. today, the turf was listed as good and the dirt track was listed as fast. As of 10:20 a.m. it was not raining at Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach-about midway between downtown Miami and downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Because of rain overnight, Gulfstream on Wednesday moved three of its five turf-scheduled races to dirt.

Racing Today

Lady Zuzu, trained by Bill Mott, is one of several horses in today’s feature that will likely run in stakes races at Gulfstream this winter.

Her 2015 record includes a second place finish in the 1 1/8 mile Regret (Grade 3) and third place in the 1 1/16 mile Edgewood (Grade 3)–both at Churchill Downs.

John Velazquez has the mount on Lady Zuzu. She is one of several contenders with early speed, along with Don’t Blame Me (Kristin Mulhall/Edgar Prado) Silvery Starlet (Ralph Nicks/Tyler Gaffalione) and Twist ’n Bake (Bobby Dibona/Eddie Castro).

Comet Sixty Two (Chad Brown/Javier Castellano) and Giant’s Jewel (Tom Bush/Edgard Zayas) are stalkers who might benefit from a fast early pace.
