Vasquez Rides Six Winners at Gulfstream

Fresh off a three-win day Friday, jockey Miguel Vasquez rode six more winners on Saturday’s card at Gulfstream Park to surge within two winners of the top of the Spring/Summer Meet standings.

The up-and-coming 25-year-old jockey closed in on Spring/Summer Meet co-leaders Emisael Jaramillo and Edgard Zayas, who each rode one winner Saturday and each have 96 wins for the meet.

Vasquez pushed his meet total to 94 victories, scoring aboard Mustang Cat ($22) in Race 1, Beast of Wildwood ($7) in Race 4, Sky Chaser ($5.60) in Race 6, Reggae Revolution ($12.80) in Race 8, Squeezadios ($5.40) in Race 10, and Bridologist ($3.80) in Race 11.

Vasquez’s career day fell one short of the Gulfstream Park record of seven wins on a program shared by Jerry Bailey (March 11, 1995), Tyler Gaffalione (July 4, 2017) and Luis Saez (Jan. 24, 2018 and March 29, 2018).

Sunday will be the 87th day of Gulfstream's spring/summer meet which is scheduled to end Sept. 27.

The Sunday card has eleven races, with first post at 12:00 p.m.

Vasquez is named to ride in eleven races--all but the first. Jaramillo is scheduled to have ten mounts and Zayas is scheduled on six mounts.

Vasquez has had a steady presence at Gulfstream since venturing to the U.S. from Panama in 2014, winning more than 100 races in each of the past four years, but he has taken his career to a new level during the Spring/Summer Meet.

Vasquez rode Mustang Cat and Beast of Wildwood for trainer Peter Walder, who has also been on a roll of late. Since the beginning of July, Walder has saddled 21 horses during the Spring/Summer Meet while compiling an 8-2-7 record. After missing three months due to injury, Vasquez has ridden 109 winners since returning to action Jan. 15.
