Research by HorseRacingFLA shows there has been just one year when the winner of the Florida Derby went on to win the Kentucky Derby AND the winner of the Gulfstream Park Oaks, or its predecessor race, went on to win the Kentucky Oaks.
That year was 1979.
Spectacular Bid won the Florida Derby and later won the Kentucky Derby. Davona Dale won the Bonnie Miss Stakes and later won the Kentucky Oaks.
This year, prospects are strong that Tiz the Law and Swiss Skydiver will produce the second-ever Gulfstream Park double-double at Churchill Downs.
Tiz the Law won the Florida Derby (Grade 1) at Gulfstream on March 28. He undoubtedly will be the heavy favorite in the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) on Sept. 5.
Swiss Skydiver won the Gulfstream Park Oaks (Grade 2) on March 28. She likely will be the first or second betting choice in the Kentucky Oaks (Grade 1) on Sept. 4. Gamine, based in California, will be her principal rival.
Both Churchill Downs classic races for 3-year-olds will have other contenders that raced this year at Gulfstream and/or at Tampa Bay Downs.
Numerous horses that raced in Florida this year also will be in fields for other graded stakes on Oaks Day and Derby Day at the historic track in Louisville, Ky.
This article is the start of our daily "Flori-dized" coverage that will continue through Oaks Day and Derby Day.
