Trainer Joseph, Owner Arindel Lead GP Standings

At the Gulfstream Park spring/summer meet Saffie Joseph Jr. is leading trainers in wins with 41 through Sunday, the  Hallandale Beach, Fla., track's most recent race day.

Arindel is in first place in the owners' standings, with 17 victories.

When Gulfstream resumes racing on Thursday, it will be the 79th day of the 107-day meet that began April 4 and is scheduled to end Sept. 27.

Mike Maker is second in the trainer standings with 35 wins. He is followed by Antonio Sano with 31 and Todd Pletcher with 30.

From 2015 through 2019, Gulfstream held separate three-month spring and summer meets.

Last year, Joseph led the combined spring meet and summer meet standings with 43 wins. Sano was second with 39.

This year, Joseph also has emerged as a major trainer on the national scene--primarily with horses that are stabled regularly at Gulfstream.

The most prominent of his horses is Ny Traffic, one of the likely favorites in the 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) that will be run Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Ny Traffic, a late closer, finished second by  a nose to the front-running Authentic on July 18 in the 1 1/8 mile Haskell (Grade 1)--at speed-favoring Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

Arindel's farm is in Ocala.  It is owned by the family of Alan Cohen, a former majority owner of the Florida Panthers.

Ocala-based Stonehedge Llc, owned by Gilbert Campbell, is second in the owners' standings with 14 wins and Frank Carl Calabrese is third with 13.

Campbell's victories in the current Gulfstream meet include the first two races in the annual Florida Sire Stakes  Series for-year-old.

On Aug. 1, Breeze on By won the $100,000 Dr. Fager for males and Go Jo Jo Go won the $100,000 Desert Vixen for fillies.  Both races were six furlongs on dirt.

For Gulfstream's combined 2019 spring/summer meets, Mike Naploi was first in owner win with 28 and Arindel was second with 27.

Napoli is a former Major League Baseball player, mostly at first base and catcher and as a DH.  He hit 267 career home runs while playing for the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox.

Napoli-trained horses have raced only three times this spring/summer at Gulfstream--with no victories.  He is racing primarily at tracks in northeastern states.
