Sunday Preview: Carryovers at Gulfstream; Tampa Bay Back on the Turf

HorseracingFLA Staff Report

Gulfstream Park has a 12-race card today with first post of 12:35 p.m. and two big carryovers.

For the first race, there is a carryover of $24,156.58 on the Super Hi-5.

The carryover on the Rainbow 6 is $3,839,622.87. It is on races seven through 12, with the sequence starting at 3:35 p.m.

Additional details on the Rainbow 6 are on our blog, where we also will have coverage of this afternoon’s racing at Tampa Bay Downs and at Gulfstream.

Tampa Bay has a ten-race card with first post of 12:25 p.m.

The Tampa Bay main track is listed as fast and the turf course is listed as good.

The sixth race was scheduled for turf, but has been moved to dirt and will be run at one mile and 40 yards.

The eighth and tenth races are scheduled for turf.P1050622

Tampa Bay Downs moved all scheduled-for-turf races to dirt yesterday due to rain.

According to the Weather Channel there is only a 15 percent chance of rain during today’s racing hours in and around Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar.

At Gulfstream, the main track is listed as fast and the turf is listed as firm.

According to the Weather Channel, there is a 65 percent chance of thunderstorms during today’s racing hours in and around Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach.

Barring lengthy downpours it is likely that the six scheduled-for-turf races, including the first, will stay on that surface.

There is a carryover on the Super Hi-5 because there were no winning tickets on the bet on Saturday’s last two races.

It requires picking the first five horses in order, with no consolation payoffs.

If there are no tickets with the correct order, all bets on the Super Hi 5 are carried over to the next race on which it is available.  Gulfstream has the Super Hi 5 on all races when at least seven horses (betting interests) leave the walking ring for the track.

It is a $1 minimum bet with a 15 percent takeout.

Today’s first race is 7 ½ furlongs on turf for 4-YOs and up.  It is a $25,000 optional claimer with a $44,000 purse.

There are nine runners, following the scratches of three horses that were main track only.

Lasso and Gustnado are among the likely favorites.

Lasso is from the red-hot barn of trainer Jorge Navarro, and will be ridden by Emisael Jaramillo. He is one of several horses with early speed.

Gustnado is trained by Bill Mott and will be ridden by Jose Lezcano. He is a late runner. Our only suggestion is to use this horse in both the first and second spots in the Super Hi-5.

Based on wagering patterns with a large carryover it is likely that bettors will wager at least $50,000 on the Super Hi-5 in today’s first race.

In Saturday’s 13th and final race, the winner was Little John W at 23-1. The second, fourth and fifth place finishers were all 10-1 or higher in the 12-horse field.  That kind of finish order often has no winning Super Hi-5 tickets.
