Gulfstream Park will have a carryover of $ $2,635,571 on its Rainbow 6 when it resumes racing today with 11 races and first post of 12:35 p.m.
The Rainbow 6 requires picking the winners of each of the day’s last six races. It is a 20-cent per combination only bet, with multiple horses allowed in each race.
Today it is on races six to eleven, with the sequence starting at 3:05 p.m.
Six races, including four in the Rainbow 6, are on the turf. The Rainbow 6 races have 62 entrants, including also eligibles and main track only.
We’ll leave the research to you. But we suggest you note that on Saturday and Sunday the turf course was extremely fast and favored horses with early speed.
Our research indicates that Wednesday’s carryover is among the five highest in the six-year history of the Rainbow 6 at Gulfstream.
The carryover has been growing because there have been 39 straight race days without the jackpot-taking requirement of there being just one ticket with the winners of all six races.
There is a 20 percent takeout on the Rainbow 6. On each of the last 39 “multiple winner” days, Gulfstream per the bet’s rules has divided 56 percent of the day’s bet among tickets with all six winners and put 24 percent into the carryover.
Gulfstream has set Saturday March 26 as a mandatory payout for the Rainbow 6. That day, it will pay out the day’s bet (minus 20 percent) plus the full carryover even if there are multiple tickets with all six winners.
Gulfstream has 13 race days until March 26. If there is a single-winner jackpot ticket in the interim, Gulfstream will still have the mandatory payout on March 26.
As the carryover has grown, betting on the Rainbow 6 averaged just under $480,000 from last Thursday through Sunday.
Despite the high takeout, many betting teams are attracted by the prospect of large daily pools that can produce large payoffs even without being the single jackpot winner.
For example the carryover was $2,503,517 going into Sunday.
Bettors wagered $550,293 on the Rainbow 6. In the sequence, there was one winner at 13-1 odds and the other winners were 5-1 or lower including two favorites.
There were 110 winning Rainbow 6 tickets, with each paying $2,809.82.
Gulfstream added approximately $132,070 to the carryover, growing it to more than $2.6 million.
Record Carryover
The record carryover for the Rainbow 6 was $6,397,286 going into the day on May 25, 2014.
There was a mandatory payout scheduled on May 26, and Gulfstream expected there might be $10 million in Rainbow 6 bets that day.
But on May 25, one bettor had the only ticket with all six winners and it paid $6,678,939.12. The bet had every horse in five of the Rainbow 6 races and two horses in the other race.
