GP West Saturday: Two Turf Stakes, Two Carryovers

The Gulfstream Park West meet on Saturday will have two turf stakes, a Super Hi-5 carryover of $9,267 in the first race and a Rainbow 6 carryover that has grown to  $207,465.

First post will be 12:35 p.m. for a nine-race card at Calder in Miami Gardens, Fla. 

The first, third, fifth, seventh and ninth races are scheduled for the turf.  The Weather Channel forecast is for a chance of rain between 25 and 50 percent during racing hours. On this blog. will post track conditions when they are available

Friday was the second straight race day on which no races were moved off the turf due to rain or other wet conditions.

But at least one race has been taken off turf on 26 of the 34 days thus far in the meet.

As we have noted, the GP West  meet will end on Nov. 28 and it likely will be the last thoroughbred racing at Calder.

Churchill Downs Inc., Calder's parent company, is planning to not renew the lease under which Gulfstream Park has held race meets at Calder each October and November since 2014. Gulfstream will add the two months to its schedule at its track in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The Saturday  feature race is the $60,000 Millions Turf Preview at 1 1/16 miles on for Florida-breds  3-YO and up.  It is the fifth race, with scheduled post of 2:38 p.m.

The other stakes is the  $60,000 Juvenile Fillies Turf at one mile on turf for Florida-bred 2-YO fillies. It is the seventh race.

On Friday, the Super Hi-5 had no tickets with the correct order of finish in any of the last three races.

Thus, there is the carryover.  The first race is five furlongs on turf, and is a maiden claimer for 2-YO  fillies.

The Rainbow 6 will be on races four to nine with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:03 p.m.

On Friday, there were eleven tickets with all six winners in the Rainbow 6. Each won $5,824 on the 20 cents per  combination-only bet.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 5-4-6-8-2-9.

The carryover coming into Friday  was $180,005. Bettors added $114,476 to the pool.

Of that new bet meet sponsor Gulfstream took out 20 percent, divided 56 percent among winning tickets and added 24 percent to the carryover.

*On Thursday, the Rainbow 6 came within a head of being taken down by a single ticket.

Going into the eighth and final races, there were 16 live tickets in the Rainbow 6. Five of the tickets had a horse singled in the 12-horse field.

One of those horses Blues Songs (8), at 16-1in the WPS pool. She took a brief lead in deep stretch but was caught in the final strides by Karenina  (2), at 6-1.

Karenina, who was on two live tickets, won by a head in the four-horse blanket finish.  

The 8-2 exacta paid $330.20 in the claiming race at one mile on turf for fillies and mares 3-YO and up.

In the Rainbow 6, there were just two tickets with all six winners. Both won $25,356.44 on the 20 cents per combination-only bet.

If Blues Songs or another singled horse had won, the payout would have been about $235,000--a combination of the entire coming-in carryover of $158.270 and 80 percent of the day's Rainbow 6 bet of $90,587.
