Longshot Shedaresthedevil Wins Kentucky Oaks, Followed by Gamine and Swiss Skydiver

The 15-1 shot Shedaresthedevil set a stakes record as she beat Swiss Skydiver by1 1/2 lengths on Friday in the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (Grade 1) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The 3-5 favorite Gamine finished third, 1 1/2 lengths behind Swiss Skydiver who was the second betting choice at 5-2. Speech, at 5-1, came in fourth, another 5 3/4 lengths back in the nine-horse field of 3-year-old fillies,

The 7-1 exacta paid $116.60 on a $2 bet and the 7-1-5 trifecta paid $243.60 on a $2 bet.

Shedaresthedevil won the 1 1/8 mile Kentucky Oaks in 1:48.28 on the dirt track listed as Fast. She broke the stakes record of 1:48.68 that Bird Town set in 2003, and earned a huge 111 Equibase Speed Figure. 

Florent Geroux rode the winner for trainer Brad Cox.

Gamine, uneaten in her four previous starts, led until the final eighth mile, with Shedaresthedevil always a close second on the outside and Swiss Skydiver third near the inside.

Fractions were :23.39, :47.82 and 1:12.12.

Shedaresthedevil passed Gamine at the eighth pole and then held off a late run by Swiss Skydiver.

Shedaresthedevil and Swiss Skydiver are both daughters of Daredevil. That horse won the Champagne Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont Park in 2014.  But he was retired early in 2015 due to injuries.

Tyler Gaffalione rode Swiss Skydiver for trainer Ken McPeek and owner Peter Callahan, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Swiss Skydiver came into the Kentucky Oaks with four 2020 wins in graded stakes. That includes the Gulfstream Park Oaks (Grade 2) on March 28.

John Velazquez rode Gamine for trainer Bob Baffert.

The victory in the Kentucky Oaks was the fifth in ten career starts for Shedaresthedevil,  Two of those wins were this year in the Indiana Oaks (Grade 3) at Indiana Grand and in the Honeybee (Grade 3) at Oaklawn Park.

On Saturday, we will have an analysis of the Kentucky Oaks and previews of the Kentucky  Derby, which has a scheduled post time of 7:01 p.m.
