Tapwrit Wins Belmont Stakes

Tapwrit took the lead in the final half furlong and went on to beat the 5-2 favorite Irish War Cry by two  lengths in the Belmont Stakes (Grade 1) on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Patch  finished third and Gormley came in fourth in the 1 1/2 mile dirt stakes for 3-year-ods.

The Belmont victory was the second in a major stakes race for Tapwrit this year.  On March 11, he  won the  Tampa Bay Derby (Grade 2) at Tampa Bay Downs in OIdsmar, Fla.

The son of Tapit won the Belmont in 2:30.20 on the track listed as fast.  He was the 5-1 second betting choice  in the 11-horse field,

Irad Ortiz Jr. rode Tapwrit for trainer Todd Pletche.
