Draw for Belmont Stakes is At Noon Wednesday; Florida Derby Winner Tiz the Law Heads Field

The post positions draw will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday for Saturday's $1 million Belmont Stakes (Grade1) at Belmont Park in Elmont N.Y.

It is anticipated that nine horses will be entered in the Belmont, which this year is the first race in thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown for 3-year-olds.'

Tiz the Law, winner of the Florida Derby (Grade 1) at Gulfstream Park on March 28, is the likely heavy favorite. Four of the other likely entrants raced at Gulfstream and/or at Tampa Bay Downs this year.

The draw will be streamed live on the New York Racing Association's YouTube pagehttps://www.youtube.com/user/NYRAvideo

Scheduled  post for the Belmont Stakes is 5:42 p.m. Eastern.  It  will be carried live by the NBC over the air channels.

The Belmont Stakes is traditionally run at 1 1/2 miles as the third leg of the Triple Crown.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there are some changes this year.

The Belmont will be 1 1/8 miles because due to postponement of several prep races, most of the Belmont entrants have not raced longer than 1 1/16 miles.

The Kentucky Derby has been moved back from May 2 to Sept. 5.  It keeps its 1 1/4 mile distance and remains at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The Preakness Stakes has been rescheduled from May 16 to Oct. 3.  It keeps its 1 3/16 mile distance and  remains at Pimlico in Baltimore.

The colt Tiz the Law is owned by Sackatoga Stable and is trained by Barclay Tagg.  They had the same roles with Funny Cide. In 2003, that gelding won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and finished third in the Belmont.

In addition to the 1 1/8 mile Florida Derby, Tiz the Law won last year's one-mile Champagne Stakes (Grade 1) at Belmont and this year's 1 1/16 mile Holy Bull (Grade 2) at Gulfstream.

Sole Volante, Dr Post, Farmington Road and Tapit to Win also have raced in Florida.

The late-running Sole Volante won the 1 1/16 mile Sam F. Davis  (Grade 3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 8.

Dr Post won the ungraded Unbridled Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on April 25.

Jungle Runner, Max Player, Pneumatic and Modernist are the other likely entrants.
