Jockey Ronald Allen Jr.’s quest for his 3,500th
career win is being delayed due to a fractured rib.
He has been taken off his scheduled mounts Wednesday in
the second fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth races at Tampa Bay Downs.
Allen sustained the injury in a spill in Sunday’s
ninth and final race at Tampa Bay.
Yorkshire
Inn,
Allen’s mount, was bumped and fell near the eighth pole in that turf race. Yorkshire Inn sustained injuries that resulted
in his being euthanized by injection.
Allen walked off the course on his own power. But it was
later discovered that he had a fractured rib.
Information on when Allen might return to racing was
not readily available.
Allen won his 3,499h career race last Saturday, on Game Lad in the eighth race at Tampa
Bay.
He was winless in six starts at Tampa Bay on Sunday.
Allen’s 3,499
wins place him 116th on Equibase’s career wins list for jockeys in the
United States and Canada.
The Equibase list is for all jockeys who have ridden
in North America since 1976. It includes
all pre-1976 wins for jockeys who began their careers prior to that year.
Allen turned 53
on Monday. He has led Tampa Bay jockeys
in wins four times—most recently in 2010-2011.
Wednesday is the 84th day of Tampa Bay’s
91-day race meet for 2016-2017.
Going into the day, Daniel Centeno led jockeys with 90 wins. Edwin
Gonzalez is second with 79 victories, followed by Pablo Morales with 70 and
Allen with 69.
