Bettors who were
chasing a mandatory payoff on a carryover wagered $15,788,224 on the Rainbow 6
at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.
That betting combined with
the carryover of $3,991,011 to produce a Rainbow 6 pool of $19,779,235.
The day’s wagering and
the pool were both North American records for a Pick 6 bet, according to
Gulfstream.
The payoff was
$15,566.10 on a 20 cent bet on each ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow
6 races. The previous records were set
at Gulfstream on March 26, 2016.
There were 1,068 winning
tickets, according to calculations by HorseRacingFLA. Winners divided a jackpot of $16,621,590. That
was a combination of the entire carryover plus 80 percent of Sunday’s Rainbow 6
bets. Each day, there is a 20 percent takeout on new Rainbow 6 bets.
On non-mandatory payoff
days, Gulfstream pays out the jackpot only when there is just one ticket with all
six Rainbow 6 races. On those days, it
takes out the 20 percent, divides 56 percent among tickets with the most
winners (usually six) and ads 24 percent to the carryover.
The carryover had grown
because Gulfstream had gone 39 straight days with multiple Rainbow 6 winning
tickets.
Sunday’s betting on the
Rainbow 6 was more than half of the day’s all-sources handle (total handle) of
$28,079,029 for Gulfstream’s 12 races.
Our records indicate
that was the largest ever at Gulfstream except for days when it held the
Breeders’ Cup, the Pegasus World Cup or the Breeders’ Cup.
Prior to Sunday, the
records for the Rainbow 6 wagering of $10,782,375 and a total pool of $15,285
on March 26, 2016.
The carryover coming in
that was $4,503,332 and had built up over 52 days. There were 146 winning
Rainbow 6 tickets—each paying $89,457.
Gulfstream will begin a
new Rainbow 6 pool on Wednesday when it resumes racing with ten races and first
post of 12:35 p.m.
The only Gulfstream carryover
going into Wednesday is $4,143 on the Super Hi-5 on the first race.
