TAMPA TURF TEST
Saturday, January 6
Here is our handicapper Bob Bauer's full analysis of the fourth and co-feature race at Tampa Bay
An evenly matched field of ten fillies and mares will meet
in Saturday’s Tampa Turf Test which is carded as the fourth race. These
contests are usually good betting races and many of the runners are well known
to the Tampa fans. The distance of today’s turf test is 8 1/2 furlongs, and the
conditions are for $16,000 Starter Allowance company.
PUBLICIST (5) is the choice to get the money here. This
six-year-old mare was an impressive winner in her first start in Tampa back in
November. She closed with authority to best a similar field at one mile and has
a pair of victories at today’s distance. Red-hot jockey Antonio Gallardo
retains the mount for the always dangerous Ralph Zadie outfit. She’s a square
price at 5/1 on the morning line.
MAST COVE (10), at 7/2, is another who comes of a nice mile
win over the local lawn. She wired a group much like she faces today. However,
she won’t get an easy loose-on-the-lead trip with several other early speed
types to contend with. Appears to be in top form now, as her last victory
followed a three month freshening. Regular rider Scott Spieth goes for veteran
conditioner John Rigattieri.
A 4/1 shot, JERMYN STREET (8) gave a good account of herself
beating a field of $16,000 non-winners of three lifetime by almost 5 lengths on
the grass and earned a top figure. She gets tested for class as she leaves the
condition claiming ranks for the first time and could be tough here if she
stands the raise. Keith Nations gives a leg up to returning pilot Jose Ferrer
who is riding as good as ever after recovering from serious injuries.
