Hofburg Hits the Track at Churchill

Hofburg, runner-up in the Florida Derby (Grade I) at Gulfstream Park on March 31, made his first visit to the track at Churchill Downs on Wednesday morning as he began his preparations for the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) that will be run on May 5.

Hofburg arrived at Churchill Downs in Louisville  on Tuesday, following a van ride from Payson Park in Indiantown, Fla.,

On Wednesday he galloped 1 ¼ miles over a “good’ track under exercise rider Penny Gardiner.

Trainer Bill Mott has planned Sunday as the day for Hofburg's final pre-Derby work.

Irad Ortiz Jr. , who rode Hofburg in the Florida Derby, has the mount in the Kentucky Derby.

Hofburg, a son of Tapit, has won one of three career starts.

In the 1 1/8 mile Florida Derby, Hofburg rallied from eighth place after a half mile and finished six lengths behind Audible.

Todd Pletcher trains Audible, who likely will be one of the favorites in the 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby.
