Trainer Carlo Vaccarezza has added the 5-year-old mare Jewel of a Cat to his barn and he plans to start her out in a stakes against the boys at the Gulfstream Park West meet on Saturday.
On Tuesday, Vaccarezza said he will enter Jewel of a Cat in the Millions Turf Sprint Preview. The five-furlong race is one of the day's eight stakes races for Florida breds, all with $100,000 purses, being run at Calder. The fields will be announced late Wednesday afternoon.
Saturday's race will be the second for Jewel of a Cat on the Calder turf. On Nov.1, 2014 she finished second in the Sparkler Stakes at five furlongs for fillies and mares.
Jewel of a Cat is a turf sprint specialist. She has spent her career with Ben Perkins who races his horses mostly at tracks in northeastern states.
The ownership team of Jewel of a Cat includes John Williams, who has been part-owner of numerous horses bred and trained by Vaccarezza.
Also on Saturday at GP West, Vaccarezza plans to run Little Nick V in the $100,000 Juvenile Turf at one mile.
It will be the third race, all on turf, for Little Nick V. He finished third at 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream and second at one mile at GP West.
Little Nick V is owned by a partnership of Little Dreams Racing, of which Vaccarezza is managing partner. Little Dreams' goal is to let "the little guy" into racing by investing a stake as small as 1 percent of the purchase price of a horse.
