Saturday Racing: Five Stakes for 3-YOs at Gulfstream; Ten Races at Tampa Bay

By Jim Freer

All thoroughbreds that were born in North America in 2013 became 3-year-olds for racing purposes yesterday, Jan. 1.

Some of the East Coast’s most promising members of that class will run this afternoon at Gulfstream Park, which will have five stakes races for newly-turned 3-year-olds. They are part of an 11-race card with first post at 12:05 p.m.

All of the day’s Gulfstream races are for 3-year-olds. The first, sixth, ninth and eleventh races are maiden special weights–all with some high-priced horses that could move up to stakes during the Gufstream championship meet that will end on April 2.

Tampa Bay Downs will have ten races today with first post at 12:28 p.m.

There are no stakes races today at the Oldsmar track. It will have three stakes races next Saturday, Jan. 9.

We will be at Gulfstream this afternoon and will monitor Tampa Bay, with reports on both tracks on our blog.

Today’s Gulfstream stakes, all with $100,000 purses, are:

* Third race,1:05 p.m.–Hutcheson (Grade 3) at 6 furlongs on dirt.

Full Salute has won stakes races at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, Parx Racing in Philadelphia and at the Gulfstream Park West meet held at Calder.

He likely will be stalking the leaders and has good prospects in a race with several speed horses.

Edgard Zayas will ride Full Salute for trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. and owner Morris Bailey.

Trainer Eddie Plesa Jr.
Trainer Eddie Plesa Jr.

Sheikh of Sheikhs, who has the outside seven post, is the speedster with the strongest credentials. On Oct. 31 at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., he won the six-furlong Juvenile Dirt Sprint.

Joel Rosario will ride Sheikh of Sheikhs for trainer Wesley Ward.

* Fourth race,1:35 p.m.–Old Hat (Grade 3) at 6 furlongs on dirt for fillies

Ballet Diva is the likely favorite in the six-horse field.

She won two stakes at Gulfstream this year and on Nov. 28 won the six-furlong House Party at the Gulfstream Park West meet held at Calder.

Regular rider Jose Caraballo has the mount on Ballet Diva, from the barn of trainer Stan Gold and owner Jacks or Better Farm.

Ballet Diva has the rail post, and could be hard to catch if she gets a clean break.

The Old Hat has several other horses with early speed.

If a duel develops up front, the stalker Catira Rock could be a threat to Ballet Diva in the stretch. Catira Rock is trained by Antonio Sano and will be ridden by Edgard Zayas.

* Fifth race, 2:05 p.m.–Ginger Brew at 7 ½ furlongs on dirt for fillies

Lira has won both her starts and is the likely favorite.

Her second win was on Nov. 28 in the Wait a While Stakes at one mile on turf at Gulfstream Park West (Calder).

Lira is trained by Todd Pletcher and will be ridden by Javier Castellano.

The field also has stakes winners Pancake and Andreya’s Warrior.

* Seventh race. 3:05 p.m.–Dania Beach (Grade 3) at 7 ½ furlongs on turf

The field is headed by Isotherm and Mountain Music Man, each a turf stakes winner at Belmont Park this fall. We will have a preview of the race this afternoon on our blog.

* Tenth race, 4:35 p.m.–Mucho Macho Man, one mile on dirt

Fellowship is a late-runner who appears better suited to today’s distance than most of the others in the race.

On Oct. 3 at Gulfstream he was an impressive come-from-behind winner of the 1 1/16 mile in Reality.

Fellowship is from the Gold-Jacks or Better barn, and the colt’s regular jockey Caraballo has the mount.

Trainer Stanley Gold

The most dangerous of several speed horses could be Awesome Speed, the winner of the six-furlong James F. Lewis Stakes at Laurel Park in Maryland on Nov. 14. John Velazquez will ride Awesome Speed for trainer Alan Goldberg.

Although the Mucho Macho Man does not have graded status, it is regarded as the first Gulfstream prep race for the Florida Derby (Grade 1) on April 2.

Our picks to win:

* Hutcheson — Full Salute
* Old Hat — Ballet Diva
* Ginger Brew — Andreya’s Reward
* Dania Beach — Isotherm
* Mucho Macho Man — Fellowship

New Year’s Review: Itsaknockout Rolls Toward Donn; El Grande Rojo Ties Tampa Record

HorseracingFLA Staff Report

The victories by Itsaknockout on Thursday at Gulfstream Park and by El Grande Rojo on Wednesday at Tampa Bay Downs were New Year’s week highlights at Florida’s thoroughbred tracks.

Itsaknockout won a one-mile allowance in a dominant way that indicated he will be a top contender in stakes races such as the $500,000 Donn Handicap (Grade 1) on Feb. 5. The Donn, at 1 1/8 miles on dirt is Gulfstream’s richest race for 4-year-olds and up.

El Grande Rojo tied a Tampa Bay Downs track record when he won a seven-furlong optional claiming race in 1:21.40.

Itsaknockout (photo on home page) ended his 3-year-old campaign with a 4 ¾ length victory over Elnaawi in the fast time of 1:35.02.

It was the fourth victory in six career starts for Itsaknockout and first since last Feb. 21 when he won by disqualification in the 1 1/16 mile Fountain of Youth (Grade 2) at Gulfstream. Upstart came in first. 2 ½ lengths ahead of Itsaknockout. But stewards reversed that order after they determined that Upstart interfered with Itsaknockout in the stretch.

Todd Pletcher trains Itsaknockout for Starlight Racing.

Pletcher was not at Gulfstream on Thursday. Assistant trainer Anthony Sciametta, Pletcher’s top lieutenant in Florida, saddled Itsaknockout.

“If he comes out sound I’m sure Todd has a game plan hopefully to get him to the Donn Handicap,” said Starlight co-managing partner Don Lucarelli.

Confidently ridden by Luis Saez, who has been aboard for all six of the Lemon Drop Kid colt’s starts, Itsaknockout took command with a four-wide move at the top of the stretch and opened up down the lane to take the one-mile optional claiming allowance over a fast main track.

Following the Fountain of Youth, Itsaknockout finished fourth in the 1 1/8 mile Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream on March 28. He finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby (Grade 1) at Churchill Downs on May 2 at Churchill Downs.

“The time off definitely served him well,” Lucarelli said. “It allowed him to mature, and he put on some weight. All systems were go, and he showed it today.”

Breaking from post two, Saez allowed Itsaknockout to settle in third behind dueling leaders Sr. Quisqueyano and Bluegrass Singer through a quarter-mile in 23.48 seconds, a half if 45.80 and six furlongs in 1:09.81. Itsaknockout ranged up on the outside to launch his bid before drawing away under a hand ride. Favored at 7-5 in the field of seven, he returned $4.80.

“What a nice trip. He wanted to run today,” Saez said. “He was feeling so good. I let him be comfortable and when we came to the three-eighths [pole], I let him run and he took off.”

Elnaawi rallied for second with Just Call Kenny third. They were followed by Norumbega, Sr. Quisqueyano, General a Rod and Bluegrass Singer.

El Grande Rojo tied the seven-furlong Tampa Bay Downs record set by Catalina Red on Dec. 27, 2014.

Catalina Red, then a 2-year-old, set the record in the Pasco Stakes. He won by a neck over X Y Jet, who had led most of the race.

Ridden by Fernando De La Cruz, El Grande Rojo paid $22.80 to win in Wednesday’s conditional allowance/$32,000 optional claiming event.

It was the gelding El Grande Rojo’s last race in his 7-year-old season.

After stalking a blazing early pace by Tiger Tank, the winner blew past on the turn and showed no letup, winning by seven lengths from Aye Skipper. Purple Egg, the 2012 Inaugural Stakes winner, finished fifth in the six-horse field as the 9-5 wagering favorite.

El Grande Rojo, at 10-1, was the second longest shot in the race. Aye Skipper was 45-1, leading to large payoffs that included $377.60 for the $2 exacta.

El Grande Rojo and Catalina Red are the only horses in the track’s 90-year history to win a seven-furlong race in under 1:22.

“We thought he was sitting on a big effort,” said Joe Woodard, who trains El Grande Rojo for owners Billy, Donna and Justin Hays.

“He had breezed pretty good over this track, and he has a good record here (three victories and 10 in-the-money performances from 15 starts),” Woodard said. “It looked like Fernando had tons of horse at the 3/8-mile pole, and when he made his move I knew we were in pretty good shape.”

De La Cruz was surprised to see the final time when he crossed the finish and said El Grande Rojo was barely blowing hard afterward.

“He galloped out good. Everything was normal,” he said.

El Grande Rojo has 12 wins in 44 career starts and has won $257,943.
