Gulfstream Handle Up 4.7 Percent Meet to Date

Gulfstream Handle  Up 4.7 Percent Meet  to Date

By Jim Freer and Barry Unterbrink

After the first month  of Gulfstream Park's 2019-2020 championship meet, daily average total handle is up 4.7 percent meet-to-date from last season.

HorseRacingFLA's review of Equibase charts shows that Gulfstream's current championship meet  has averaged $8.9 million per day in total handle through the 22 race days ended  Sunday, Dec. 29.

During Gulfstream's  2018-2019 championship  2018.meet, its total handle (all-sources handle) averaged $8.5 million through the 22 race days ended  Sunday, Dec. 30. 2018

The first month racing schedules have been almost identical for the two race meets..

Breakdowns are not readily available on how much of that money was bet at Gulfstream and how much was bet elsewhere--such as other racetracks, off-track betting locations, Internet and phone  accounts and Las Vegas sports  books.

Gulfstreamr, in Hallandale Beach, Fla., has not released any official handle numbers for the current race meet.

Gulfstream  officials have consistently told HRFLA that our periodic reports on the track's handle are accurate.

Gulfstream will  end ts  88-day championship meet on March 29, 2020.

For its 88-day meet in 2018-2019, Gulfstream's average daily total  handle was $10.34 million.

The Gulftream record for any of its meets was $10.56 million per day, for the 2017-2018 championship meet.

On most days this December, Gulfstream's total handle has been first among U.S. thoroughbred tracks or second, behind Aqueduct in Ozone Park, N.Y.

Gulfstream's next race day is Wednesday Jan. 1. January and February are traditionally its two strongest months for day-to-day handle.

Gulfstream's average handle numbers are boosted by wagering that has hit $40 million on Pegasus day and on Florida Derby day.  Those race days will be Jan. 25 and March 28 in 2020.

Today's play is in Race 6, Post time is 3:13 PM. Three year-olds and up go seven furlongs on the main track under $32,000 NW2X Optional Claiming conditions.

CAVE RUN (4) was an impressive winner at this distance in his last outing on November 27 and appears to be in fine fettle now. He has potent late pace ability, and will be closing on several need to lead types, some of dubious ability to get the seven panels. Regular Tampa rider Castenon has the return call. This son of STREET SENSE likes the distance (1 win, 1 show in 2 attempts) and Tampa (2 wins, 1 place, 1 show in 4 tries.)

BAUER'S BETS: Fast at Tampa, NO TURF RACING TODAY

Today's play is in Race 7, Post 3:45 PM. Three year-old's and upward will go a mile and forty yards on the main track, (originally carded for the turf) under $25,000 starter allowance conditions.

NAMARURU (2) was the choice on the lawn, but appears able to get the job done on dirt also. This four year-old gelding has yet to race on dirt, however he turned in a local bullet five panel drill in 1.01 4/5 on December 13. Red-hot (26%) Pablo Morales rides for Teresa Connelly. He and this mount were 3 for 3 earlier this year at Presque Isle.

THE BET $10 to win on NAMARURU (2) and a $2 exacta box with ACTION EVERYDAY (3) and COLTRANE (6). 2,3,6.      Total Bet $22      GOOD LUCK!!

PREVIOUS RESULTS On both Friday and Saturday the win bets missed, but the saver exacta boxes helped ease the losses a bit. Friday's paid $12.80, cutting the day's loss to $9.20. Saturday returned $17.80, making the loss $4.20. The bankroll is now minus $13.20.

Gulfstream: Two Large Thursday Carryovers

When Gulfstream Park resumes racing on Thursday, it will have carryovers of $10,872 on the Super Hi-5 in the first race and of $874,462 on the Rainbow 6 on races five through ten.

First post will be 12:35 p.m. for the ten-race card.  The Rainbow 6 sequence is scheduled to begin at 2:35 p.m.

The Rainbow 6 carryover has grown because in the entire championship meet, thus far 18 days, there have been no days with the jackpot payoff requirement of just one ticket with all six winning horses.

The jackpot consists of the entire coming-in carryover plus 80 percent of the day's new Rainbow 6 bets.

On days with multiple winning tickets, Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day's  Rainbow 6 bet. It then divides 56 percent among tickets with the
most  winners, usually six, and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

Tampa Bay Downs and Gulfstream Park will both be dark this Monday through Wednesday, and both will resume live racing on Thursday Dec. 26.

Today's Play is in Race 7, Post 3:25. A group of Three and upward $16,000 claimers go a mile and forty yards on the main track, originally carded for the turf. My turf choices got scratched, lets try to find some runners with dirt ability.

HEY BIG GUY (8) might be the one. He won nicely over this track and distance back on November 27. A repeat of that effort could put him in the winners circle again today. Top notch connections, Antonio Gallardo rides for Baltazar Galvan, they are 2 for 2 in Tampa, this young season.

Florida Tracks' Schedule for Week

Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs  will  both resume live racing  on  Wednesday.

Gulfstream will have  ten races with  first post  of  12:35 p.m.

Tampa Bay will have  nine  races with first post of  12:25 p.m.

Gulfstream
The first race on Wednesday has a carryover of $4,708 on the Super Hi-5.

The carryover on the Rainbow 6 has grown to $543,591. The 20-cent per combination only bet  will be on races  five through  ten.

Gulfstream will continue the week with its  regular  Wednesday trough Sunday schedule of live  racing.

The  week's only stakes race in Florida will be the  r. Prospector (Grade 3) at Gulfstream on Saturday.  It will  be six furlongs om dirt for  3-year-olds and up.  Entries will be out on Wednesday afternoon.

Tampa Bay

The only carryover is $1,878 on the Ultimate  Pick 6.  The 20-cent-per-combination only bet will be on races four through nine.

This is the first season for the Tampa Bay Pick  6, with a structure similar to the Gulfstream bet.  As some observers expected, the bet has not gained large early attention from fans
On most days, it has had new bets in the $5,000 to $7,000  range.

Once Tampa's Pick 6  has some larger carryovers we expect that interest in it will grow--but to nothing close to the level of Gulfstream.

The Hallandale Beach  track pioneered the low denomination bet  on which  the carryover is paid out only if there is just one ticket  with the winners of  all six  races.

Tampa Bay will be dark as usual on Thursday and then have racing on Friday and Saturday as usual.

It will add Sundays to its live schedule this weekend, and have four-day race weeks for the rest of its schedule through May 3.

The  twoFlorida  tracks will not have live racing on  Wednesday Dec.  5,  which is Christmas day.

Gulfstream 7th Race Won by 4--1 Shot

Castagno  (11), at 4-1, won Sunday's seventh race at Gilfstream to start the Late Pick 5.

Even without  a  carryover, bettors wagered $383,914 on he Late Pick 5--continuing a weekend with very large bests on the late multi-race exotics.

On Saturday wagering was $642,819 on the Late Pick 5, which is a 50 cent minimum bet.

Wagering on Saturday's Late Pick 4 was $563,312.  We will keep you posted on the remainder  of today's Gulfstream betting, and on the results.

Favored Battle of Blenheim Wins Rainbow 6 Opener

'Twas a  gate-to-wire victory, if not a famous victory, for the 3-2 favorite Battle of Blenheim (2) in Sunday's sixth race at Gulfstream Park.

The race was the start of the Rainbow 6, with a coming-in carryover of $461,557.

Gulfstram guiaranteed that the Rainbow 6  pool wold be at least $700,000.

Bettors pu $349,105 into the Rainbow 6  on Sunday--raising the pool  above $800,000 and removing any need for Gulfsteam to  put money in if there is a single ticket jackpot/carryov er winner.

The  sixth race was one mile on turf, a $35,000 claimer for 3-year-olds and up.

Battle of Blenheim won in 1:34.14 on the course listed as Firm  Jose Ortiz  rode for trainer Mike Maker.

Rainbow 6 Coming Up at Gulfstream

Conditions are listed as Fast and Firm at Gulfstream Park, where the sixth race is coming up.

It will be the start of the Rainbow 6, with a carryover of $461,577.

Gulfstream has guarantreed that the pool will be at least  $700,000.

Gulfstream Guarantees $700,000 Rainbow 6 Pool

Gulfstream Park  has a 12:00 p.m. first post for  Sunday's 11-race card, and it has guaranteed that the pool in the Rainbow 6 will be at least $700,000.

The Rainbow 6, a 20-cent per combination  only bet, will be on races  six to  11 with the sequence scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. The carryover coming in will be $461,577.

The  Rainbow  6 pool consists of the full carryover plus the day's new bets on the Rainbow 6

To reach $700,000, bettors would need to put  $238,423 into the Rainbow 6.  If the new bet is lower than that, Gulfstream will put in enough money to make up the difference.

We expect that bettors will wager between 200,00 and $300,000 on the Rainbow 6.

On Saturday, when the sequence included five  graded stakes, wagering on the Rainbow 6 was $459,654.

That was part of an all-sources handle of $17,318,451--the highest in recent years at Gulfstream olher than on days with the Pegasus, Florida Dtrby or Fountain of Youth.

Of that, Gulfstream took out 20 percent, divided 56 percent among tickets with all  six winners and added 24 percent to the carryover.

There were  64  tickets with all six winners. Each  was paud $4,052.06  on the 20-cent bet.

Program numbers of the winning horses were 4-1-4-4-6-11.

The carryover has grown because Gullfstream has gone the full first 12 days of its championship meet without the jackpot/carryover requirement of just one ticket with all six winners.

BAUER'S BETS: Fast & Firm at Tampa

Today's play is in Race 7, Post time 3:25 PM.
Fillies and Mares go a mile on the grass under NW2X $32,000 Optional Claiming conditions.

MADAM MILAN (9) looks to be well placed in this field. She has shown a good turn of late foot and there should be a strong pace (at least a half-dozen early speed types) to set up her stretch rally. Arnaud Delacour has rested her since early September and she likes to run fresh. Red-hot Dan Centeno takes the mount and they have been victorious together in the past.

THE BET: $10 to win on MADAM MILAN (9) and a $2 exacta box with ROSEBUD'S HOPE (3) and TOBAGO (4) 3,4,9 Total Bet $22 Good Luck

PREVIOUS RESULTS Saturday 11/30. Our win bet took an early lead, but tired. Had the $6.80 chalky saver exacta. Lost $15.20 for the day. The bankroll is minus $39.20

The  carried-over  Super Hi-5 paid $1,361.80 on the minimum $1 bet in the tenth and last race at Gulfstream Park on Sunday.   The number of winning  tickets was not readily available.

The carryover coming = in was $15,885--built up over  three races in which there were no tickets with the first five finishers in correct order

With the attraction of the carryover, bettors added $40,004 to the pool  for   the 10th race.

Gulfstream has the SuperHi-5  om all races  with  seven  or more starters.

Gulfstream  is dark this Monday and Tuesday.
It will have anew  Super Hi 5 pool  on Wednesday's first race, with  post time of  12:35 p.m.

Super Hi 5 betting on that race probably will  be  somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000--which is normal  when there is no carryover.
