Quip, at 19-1, Wins Tampa Bay Derby followed by Flameaway

Quip, at 19-1, passed World of Trouble in mid stretch and went on to win Saturday's $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (Grade 2) at Tampa Bay Downs.

Flameaway rallied to finish second  while World of Trouble held on for third in the 1 1/16 mile race for 3-year-olds.

Quip earned 50  Kentucky Derby qualifying points, making it almost certain that he will have a spot in the May 5 race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Flameaway, sent off at 5-1, earned 20 Derby qualifying points and now has 40. That makes it very likely that he will make the Kentucky Derby field.

World of Trouble earned ten points, his first for Derby qualifying.

The win was Quip's third in four starts and first in a stakes race.

With Florent Geroux riding, Quip won in the relatively slow time of 1:44.72 on the track listed as fast.

Quip, a son of Distorted Humor, is trained by Rodolpha Brisset.

He was bred in Kentucky by Winstar Farm and is owned by the partnership of Winstar and the China Horse Club.
