Patrick Joseph Wins Second at GP; D. Shiflett is Third

D. Shifflett, a horse we regarded as an overlay, finished third in the second  race at Gulfstream on Saturday.

Patrick Joseph, at 3-1, won the race and 5-2 favorite Stay in Cruise finished second.

D. Shifflett was sent off at  9-1 in a seven-horse field.  We thought the odds should have been about  4-1--based in large part on the horse's speed and the recent success his trainer Yvon Belsoeur and owner Bruno Schickendanz have had at Gulfstream.

As we will note later this afternoon on this blog, they have two horses running at Gulfstream on Sunday.

Our friend Jay Stone, the Gulfstream linemaker,  had D. Shifflett at 7-2 in the morning line.  Jay apparently thought that a lot of people would join him and me in noting the success that Schickendanz and Belsoeur had at Gulfstream last Saturday.

In the eighth race, their first-time starter Major Hit finished third at 22-1with Manny Aguilar on board.  Their Fifth Avenue Flash won at 19-1 with Samy Camacho  as the jockey.

Today's race was 1 1/16 miles on turf.  D. Shifflett has speed and was in outside post seven--a pair of positive factors.

D. Shifflett took the lead in mid-stretch before being passed in the final 100 yards.  Patrick Joseph won by 1 1/4 lengths over  Stay in Cruise, and D. Shifflett came in another half-length behind Stay in Cruise.

Schickendanz, Belsoeur and Camacho are all regulars at Tampa Bay Downs.  Schickendanz was third among owners in wins at Tampa Bay's 2016-2017 meet.
