Sano Wins Three on Sunshine Millions Card


Trainer Antonio Sano won three races on Saturday's Sunshine Millions day card at Gulfstream Park.

Sano's three victories included Hy Riverside in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Classic, the day's 12th and final race.

Hy Riverside, at 3-1, caught  34-1 shot Nauset Beach in deep stretch and beat him by a nose in the 1 1/8 mile dirt race for Florida-breds 4-years-old and up.

Awesome Slew, the 3-5 favorite, finished third by three-quarters of a length. Tiger of Wales, at 17-1, finished fourth in the eight-horse field.  The 9-1 shot Piloting came in fifth.  Payoffs are noted below.

John Velazquez rode Hy Riverside who won in 1:49.39 on the track listed as fast.

It was the first stakes victory for Hy Riverside, a 5-year-old gelded son of Macho Uno. Mar Racing Stable owns Hy Riverside.

Sano's other Saturday wins were with Anna  Her Highness in the second race and with India Mantuana in the ninth race.  Neither was among the five Sunshine Milllions  stakes races.

Sano has 12 wins at the Gulfstream championship meet, and is fourth in the standings.

Todd Pletcher, seeking his 14th straight championship meet  title, leads with  29 wins. Jorge Navarro is second with 15, followed by Mike Maker with 14.

Sano led trainers in wins last year at the Gulfstream spring and summer meets  and at the Gulfstream Park West meet at Calder.
