GP West Today; Zayas, Gaffalione Continue Rivalry

HorseracingFLA Staff Report
Thursday, Oct. 15--Edgard Zayas rode three winners at the Gulfstream  Park West meet yesterday.

That gives him nine wins for the meet,  after seven days, and moves him within one  of leader Tyler Gaffalione in the jockey standings. Eddie Castro is third with five wins.

Zayas and Gaffalione will continue their rivalry today at the GP West meet, held at Calder and being run by Gulfstream Park.  First post is 1:15 p.m. for the ten-race card, with no stakes races.

Zayas has six GP West mounts today, and Gaffalione has eight.

Gaffalione won four races on Sunday, his first day without a five-pound apprentice allowance in non-stakes races.  He was winless on Monday and yesterday.  But it is very unlikely that any sort of drought will ensue because of his connections to Ralph Nicks  and several other leading trainers.

Zayas, 22, is a native of Puerto Rico.  Gaffalione, 21,  is a native of South Florida.

Zayas led jockeys in wins at  last year's GP West meet.  Gaffalione, in his first year as a  jockey, finished ninth.

Gaffalione won the riding titles at this year's Gulfstream Park spring and summer meets,  with Castro second in both meets. Zayas missed parts of both meets with injuries.  He finished third in wins at the spring meet and fourth in the summer meet.

The 41-day GP West meet will conclude on Nov. 29.  The Gulfstream Park 2015-2016 championship meet will begin Dec. 5.
